definately agree with most of your take on the BR article. What I would say is that there needs to be a bit more on the threshold of how much/far/long you are riding before certain costs become relevant - you did mention this on a couple of parts.
Terrible analogy with a LeMans race track car
Hi All. Great content as always. I’ve been cycling now for 65 years. When I first started riding image was everything. Jake is absolutely right, yes you can make do with lesser spec but it’s so nice to have the best. Back in the day you could just phone Wiggles or stop off at Evans on the way home from work and buy anything you needed “off the shelf”. Just great. Sadly not anymore. Paul. 3D printed saddles become less “tacky” as they “wear in” making them easier to get in and out of. Mine took a couple of weeks. Wouldn’t be without it now. Cheers Guys, have a great Christmas.
Scope wheels..sure. 9velo. Cheaper. Basically the same and lighter.
Ummm. 9velo same as scope. Maybe the cheaper ones… but then so is the price.
Yes...many people will make statements on products without actual handling it. My bianchi oltre rc is the biggest example. So many trash it for looks but never actually handled or ridden. But if it's a canyon or now colnago..oh then it's good.
Don't get or agree with them putting Spatz on the list. They are easily the best £100 purchase I have ever made for cycling. They are quality, last forever and provide unparalleled warmth and protection. For those of us who commute 30 miles a day, even in the depth of winter, they are worth their weight in gold.
So true with Assos shorts, although oddly I treated myself to the top of the range bibs last year and hated them, they have an extra seam across the pad which irritated so I stick to the mid range bibs and half shorts for indoors.
Oh. The ones with the little man pouch.
No GTO, kinda glad they didn't work for me, save £100
merry xmas 🎄
there are some amazing 3D printed saddlers available for £40 on a well known internet site...
I wonder how many car dealerships would stay in business if they tried to sell every customer a Ferrari? Isn’t this what the bicycle industry is doing?
Interesting. I can see how it looks like that. I think that the mass market product has mostly gone direct from websites and big dealers like Sigma Sports. That leaves the high street shops with the premium market and workshop. Riders come to us because they want something custom.
I’m too old to race and long since ceased to be concerned about “performance” or “training”, which leads me to think about what things are important to the majority of cyclists? It’s a short list: safety, comfort, low maintenance/reliability/durability, and affordability. How many of those things are high on the priority list of major manufacturers?
The hybrid ebike market is very active right now. For those of us that don’t race, but enjoy a race bike… it’s complicated.
Diminishing return hits hard in cycling. No item will get twice better if you spend twice the amount of money (maybe for real entry level stuff). My theory is that anything in your budget is good value, but anything above your budget isn't. Basic example to illustrate : I was very happy with my Propel with alu wheels that I bought for 900€ second hand, and thought it would take a very long time before I spend another 900€ in a carbon wheelset. Two years later I got a summer job, and with few thousand euros on hand the wheelset then looked like a decent deal. You also pointed something crucial about the cycling industry : an expensive upgrade is nice, but a downgrade feels awful. Once you are used to carbon wheels, electronic groupset, good clothing... It's really hard to go back 😅
I bought a Specialised Align 11 with MIPS for £40. It has a 5 star rating from Virginia Tech and comes in 17 out of 280 on their list and is well ahead of much more expensive options. Price is a very poor indicator of performance because a lot of it is about marketing and there’s no need to spend £150.
Can almost garentee that Bike Radar have a sram sponsorship ongoing ,that will be why shimano Dura Ace is on there .And tgeybare j7st plain wrong about the spatzwear long covers.Buttons on anything is old fashioned The kid only thinks touchscreen is bad is because he's never had 1😊
Great video guys! This show contained tons of valuable information for the average road cyclist. These kind of videos are priceless. Thanks!
Excellent point, Chris Miller says the V4rs is a dog, and the SL8 is king, whats the difference in aero from Pogs bike with the 45mm Enve wheelset to Remcos SL8 with his small rims on his climbing set up (Look at their lombardy set ups)
Good chat, and I appreciate you discussing your dog of a bike. 😂 I am sure look make great quality bikes but I don’t think your argument about Looks submitting their bike in the wrong setup is fair. Look submitted their aero bike stock to be tested. If I buy the bike I will get the 42cm bars and the slow Corima wheels so that’s what should be tested. Kudos to Look for that, don’t know if others submitted theirs in a different setup . Anyway, for an aero bike which all it needs to be is fast and not heavy as a rock- Chris is right, the blade is neither- so it is a bit of a dog. I considered the Look but then went for a Propel which is faster and cheaper. 🤷
I have a non standard foot and apparently according to my bikefitter the s-works torch are a perfect fit for me and i have to say, they are. Would i have bought a top of the line shoe otherwise? Absolutely no, but i do not regret it a bit. Strangely spezialized only do this specific last in the s-works torch. Regarding the other items on the list, i agree with your assessment, although the wheel discussion is probably heavily influenced by you being mechanics, most consumers will probably value servicability way less than you do. Also you can have a pretty light setup with an ultegra groupset and a lighter cassette and chainset and still be under dura ace price point.
Great points
Chris Miller just speculates and trolls.
I’ve ridden Campagnolo since I got my first road bike way back in the early 90’s but switched to Shimano last year due to cost and availability. Kind of broke my cycling heart. Campagnolo used to be relatively affordable and any extra cost at the lower end offset by its serviceability and longevity. Sadly not the case now in terms of cost but I guess that’s their business model. Great talking points, thanks for this discussion.
Something about Campagnolo , it's so stiff I feel meaning more power going through and yet so smooth
Silca ti cages are the best I have ever used, love them
Nice chat guys, thanks. I think Y1RS with shallow wheels will still be faster than V4RS with deep wheels. If Y1RS is really 20W faster than V4, witch I believe to be trhu, then you are definitely not gaining 20W thanks to deep wheels :). It will be interesting to see what will Pogi ride and where :).
The cycling industry screamed when the sales went down, yet most brands try to force the customers to buy their hyper expensive overpriced products? So they can grab relatively easy money doing minimal effort (BS-ing etc.)? They need to to think & work harder to make bicycles becoming more accessible, more affordable, more fun, safer to ride. The world is getting more challenging, and there’s no such free lunch
Exactly!! The industry might want to stop obsessing about the performance sector - and do something for ordinary commuters, tourists, shoppers, etc And where is the Sram equivalent of Cues? They've ignored the entry level completely.......
Shoe fit is king. Often, that is more expensive, but not always.
I have an expensive helmet because it is more comfortable. Lighter weight, which is more comfortable, also costs more money.
The downside with me on Campy is the lack of retailers that have it.
Can totally agree with that.
Helmet-wise, I believe that fit comes first and looks second, all the supposed aero or other features are just a gimmick. Clothing is a little bit more complicated, it saddens me that premium price does not correlate with the item being made ethically nor responsibly. That's why I'm quite fond of Vaude and Biehler.
I have never come across Biehler before.
I love the slight grippiness of a 3D printed saddle on my gravel bike. Keeps me planted better on that rougher road.
Oh also - when I watched the Nero show I did lol at the comments about Look and thought of you Paul! 😂 it is indeed the best cafe racer! As for BSA in the Colnago - honestly press fit is better for carbon bikes. Peak Torque has a short video about this. Getting threads to align straight is harder than just getting a straight hole to tolerance. Bikes are not aerospace machines that have to spin a 1500kg turbine at 20,000 rpm. (I know some of you like to act like that’s your FTP but it is not). It’s simpler to use an interference fit to the frame and put the precision engineering (such as it is) in the bottom bracket. Yeah I run the Shimano plastic BB and it’s fine.
😊
Anyone wearing Galibier stuff ? I know it does not look like maap but price is amazing
Brilliant kit. The real definition of value for money.
There's a simple rule in buying clothes: Buy winter stuff in spring and summer stuff in autumn. You'll get excellent items from whatever brand at good rates. Regarding a helmet, I wouldn't compromise too much, bought a Giro Aether which at the time of purchase rated very well in test. #doctorscoot is absolutely right in his reasoning.
There are no rules bro.
Talking of bringing back stuff..the colnago geo's pre UAE (read c60, 64, concept etc) are trickling back through Ernesto's nephews Brand ACOL... quite nice stuff and technically sound with south korean QC intead of china or taiwan.
Oh. That’s worth a look.
@@MapdecVodcastit is super expensive… around 5000€ per frame
I looked at the Virginia Tech university’s tech ratings and bought the highest rated helmet on that list - Giro Aries w/ spherical MIPS. Later I bought another one because I wanted it in white. All helmets have to pass the relevant safety standards so they are allegedly all the same minimum level of safe but I wanted the safest one. And that’s the biggest list, so that’s what I chose. It’s a pretty expensive helmet. But far cheaper than my brain.
Looked up which helmet had the best crash rating. Cost me a bit over the 150 quid mark, extra peace of mind is worth it for me.
Did you offer to let Chris Miller ride your bike? Chris Miller doesn't have to ride your bike.
I’m not swapping for that Trevello Jessie bangs on about.
@@MapdecVodcasttry one maybe? What if it’s great? Patrick Lino loves his as well for instance.
"Hoping to keep it under 5 grand". 😳 Oof.
The urban myth that is aero 🤣🤣🤣
My Factor O2 VAM has survived a crash onto the mech hanger. Mech hanger needed replacing, and collarbone ended up in 4 four pieces but the frame was ok. It is definitely skittish to ride though, i had an Ostro beforehand and that was much smoother on bumpy roads and going round corners.
"they have still rated it for a 120kg rider" (immediately shows the actual limit is 120kg system weight, which includes the bike and the rider's weight) 🙄
My 2020 Addict RC 15 49cm is down to 6.67kg with mounts and assioma duo (superniced GCN Tech Show Ep. 352 😉) hard to believe the new one is 300g lighter.
@MapdecVodcast - maybe you meant 450 days? 😆 Any updates on the new Skylon?
lol. Yes. #freethescylon
4500 maybe 😅
Tell us about that beauty behind you
It’s coming
Thanks for the lead to the gran-fondo test. Glad to see Vision on there. I've always been curious about Vision wheels and why there is not much coverage on them.
As the bikes get lighter the cap peak gets bigger lol.
As an owner of the old addict sl (officially 6.0 kg), I think it is the most stable of my bikes both ascending and descending! By the way it was 3200£ back then when I bought it! I have never noticed anything with my addict sl like the things you mentioned with the Factor.
Off course that a salesman and a mechanic can certificate the manufacturing of a bike.
🤷♂️
Although I enjoy watching your videos, it is a little disappointing because many of the bicycle brands that you cover are just not available in my market (U.S.) Brands like Scott, Time, Look, etc. I have owned Time and Look pedals and Scott ski equipment, but I've never even seen a bike frame by any of those brands. Oh well...
Really? Scott is a big ski brand. Usually seen in the big resort towns. Time are now made in North Carolina. Look, fair enough, the French don’t really like stepping outside France too much.
@@MapdecVodcast Interesting about Time. I looked on their website. No retailers in Michigan where I lived for 35 years. One each in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA, so a couple within 250 miles of me where I live now. Looks like they haven't actually started any production in South Carolina yet, hopefully things will change once they do.
@@dperreno If interested just find a retailer online who ships overseas, delivery costs can't matter much at these prices!
❤Mapdec❤ Hello from Mearns Cycling Club Scotland! I have numerous Scott Addict’s, I have had the pleasure of riding the new Foil ultimate so can appreciate the differences. Is it SAFE?! Yes! (We agree) 2008+ 1st Gen 1. They have continued to pioneer & re-engineer the Addict. I rode the R-series super light Addict from 2010/11, in fact I still have the bike. It’s very stiff but this stiffness tires me out on British roads. It remains perfect in Switzerland. Even on group rides. The build is 6.34kg w/o pedals 2015 Gen 2 2. 2007 it was launched. By 2010 Cavendish won 5 stages of TDF. By 2014 some aero tubing is seen and by 2016 a disc version was sold. I bought the Scott Addict Di2 15 of 2015. It remains a very light 6.9kg w/o pedals bike. This bike made you feel less tired, added extra compliance, comfort, & a pedal transfer efficiency that was felt. In group rides this was my go to bike for 50-80 miles. Simon Yates won the white jersey in 2017 on a SL version. 3. 2020-2024 Gen 3 My RC Addict has bigger tires. 30mm! HMX frame, feels lightweight, needed a wheelset change as most stock bikes need. The addict became more comfortable than ever before, with excellent compliance, stability on corners, fast downhill and brilliant as ever climbing! Thé aerodynamic feeling is felt. Tour magazine believes it’s about a 218/220 watt bike approx. Only PROs feel 10 watt differences, the average Joe feels 20 watt differences. I can confirm that this is an amazing generation & that anyone desiring a new steed should look for bargain sales. 4. Gen 5: 2025 Addict This latest version is pure amazement on paper. This is not from the 1980s drillium era. They are using appropriately strengthened layers that you can feel will hold up our weights. Most of us are deep down weight weenies every time we hit a killer climb! 😅 Comparison: SL7 7.2kg Sram Build In my experience, for example, my SL7 feels as nimble. The SL7 has excellent power transfer, compliance, stability, but feels slightly more stiffer. I would say that the Addict of Gen 3 is close but not quite. The Aethos is very round tubed, there’s no comparison, & your partner in crime is dead on that the SL7 or SL8 feel similar. As noted if it’s 12 watts faster! It’s coming to around a 206 watt bike which is around the level of the SL7-8! Warranty: I have never had an issue. One member in our club had, & warranty claims were speedy and effective. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Note: I have a de Rosa SK, Orbea, ridden multiple other brands including SuperSix et al, I still end up returning to the Scott addict. Future Wins: Tom Pidcock is going to be a phenomenon! Well deserved, as Ineos are a travesty.
I’m not sure you watched the video. You seem upset about something we are impressed with.
@ no, I totally agree with you, after having experienced all the iteration of short bikes. Plus the fact there are plenty of deals to be had
My Time VXS translink frame weighs 1100 grams, but fully built ready for ride with campy 11speed mix is 6,6 kilo for a quarter of this price.
