  • 'Could You Survive as a Gladiator in Ancient Rome?'
Being a sports star in ancient Rome could be a deadly business. From gladiatorial duels to chariot racing, it’s hard to imagine risking life and limb in the name of entertainment. In this video, History Hit's Tristan Hughes wanted to find out what it was really like to take part in these brutal sports, so he headed to the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
What were the different types of gladiator? What weapons did gladiators use? How often were gladiators killed in the arena? All of these questions and more are put to historical interpreters and weapons experts Andy Deane and Andrew Balmforth.
But Tristan was also treated to a unique display of Ancient Rome's most popular sport - chariot racing. The circus - rather than the amphitheatre - tended to draw the biggest crowds across the Empire. With the help of horse trainer Mark Atkinson, the History Hit UA-cam team was able to take a ride in the sports car of the ancient world.
So which do you think was the ancient world's most dangerous sport?

Putting life and limb in harm's way in the name of entertainment never died out. Professional wrestling messes your body up massively and that's all in the name of entertainment.
Motor racing is also incredibly dangerous and is mostly just for entertainment

Don’t leave out Moto Cross, DownHill Skiing, Bull or Bronco Riding, granted no swords or sabers, that sexual Bottle of sweat don’t tell the NFLmarketing department.

@@flouisbailey those at least have a legitimate competition attached to it. With wrestling theres no real prize on the line. Same with a lot of lower level motorsports, kids in the junior ranks are often spending substantially more to race than they earn from racing.

@@bmxerqf882 Now that you make me think all sport has injury with little reward. Starts with kids and they get hurt and want to quit. I am a retired chiropractor and many guys history has injury where nothing was done, I saw them when they sadly were older.

I'm surprised that when talking about the factions and colors and general importance of the institution that no one mentioned the Byzantine era races. Admittedly a bit later than traditionally dated Roman era, the Blue and Green teams of the 6th century were basically political parties in Constantinople, in the Eastern Roman Empire at a period when the reconstruction of the entire Empire wasn't totally implausible.

Beats me why they're using the secutor helmet with a parmula for a hoplomachus. Apart from the actual fighting shown, this isn't bad. Don't try throwing weighted nets at an opponent without a helmet on, though, they'll have lumps for days (experience).

The closest thing we have today of Roman gladiators are MMA Fighters.
That’s why I’m a big fan of the sport. Not only is it beautiful violence. It’s also the closest we get to these guys.

Love this channel when it manages to move away from right wing imperialist apologism. The snows to me represent everything that is wrong with the British interpretation of history! As long as you avoid any of dan snows stuff it tends to be good!
