IIRC I believe the German engineers designed the use of the lug wrench instead of a screw driver. insert the blade from the tire to the center. then rest the socket of the wrench on the tire... no rag needed.
Nice tip thank you John. Mechanics often take it for granted to use a screwdriver to prise off the hubcap, but as you say, it invariably marks the rim or hubcap making it rust. Best to use correct tool as you have shown.

Couldn't you make your life a bit easier by removing the hubcaps prior to going to the garage than to instruct mechanics on how to remove them? :)
