This is my favorite Jodorowsky book by far. Heavy Metal Magazine meets Old Testament history.

That is a fantastic description of it. And, I totally agree that it us the best Jodo book. I lay a lot of that success at the feet of Gimenez. He absooutely killed it on this book.

Great analysis. If I may suggest one: checkout Requiem: Vampire Knight, written by Pat Mills and drawn by Olivier Ledroit!

That was a Heavy Metal staple in the late 90's, right? -Carson

@@LivingtheLine Had to check that; but yes, apparently it also was. I was only familiar with the book/bandes-dessinée edition (published here in Europe).
Metabaron, Storm, Trigië and Requiem are favorites. It’s interesting though: here in Europe, the book-format (like Tin Tin) has long been the dominant type of ‘strip’, which is always a rounded story per book (like Metabaron as well).

Great video. To dig further in the Incal universe, you could read Jodorowsky's Megalex with Fred Beltran, a comic book which was mainly realized with 3D process (on of the first at this time). Like in France for his 90th birthday, there is a monography in twelve volumes dedicated to Jodorowsky which is being published by the Humanoids in the US. Also, I found the new Metabaron run written by Jerry frissen (who is the editor-in-chief of the recent reboot of Metal Hurlant in France) and drawn by Valentin Sécher and Nicolas Henrichon convincing (you should check Sécher's Conan too, his art is amazing).

Megalex is cool. An odd book. I am sure we will wrap around to it eventually.
I need to get hold of those new Metabaron books. Are they up to par?
The Das Pasroras books were awesome.

I think that Frissen's Meta-Baron (and Psychoverse, etc) shows why Jodo is unique and great. The creativity, the phylosophy, his point of view are absent in Frissen's M-B and w.o Jodo's approach, that story feels like a common work, an almost mainstream story just weird enough to be appreciated and not poorly ignorated. The same goes if you compare Secher to Gimenez. Secher is just an "artisan", one that can be replaced easily, while Gimenez is one of the best and unique as well for the reasons explained in the video. I don't know if it's just me but I'm able to say that a work is done by Gimenez just looking at a very small portion of a panel thanks to his colors. And the way colors flow through the panels? That's Gimenez, man. I love it and I don't know anyone else who does that to his level.
The other 2 worthy additions in the jodoverse are Before the Incal and The Technopriests. The others aren't bad but in my opinion can't stand against those.
I really like Janjetov as an artist too. In Before the Incal he is moebiusesque without being too strict and doesn't leave you with a wish that it could've been done by the master.
As far as I hate (not always though) digital coloring I like what Beltran did in The Technopriests and it makes perfect sense if you consider the subject of that work: videogames.
I know that some don't like The Technopriests because it's repetitive and so on but, hey, it's exactly Jodo's forte, it's Jodo's vision. It's not about being repetitive, it's called poetic view in the case of Jodo since he applies his symbols and that structure to almost all his works (movies, novels, comics) and to his life too. It's also the most character driven of the four.
Anyway Incal is above them all, it's just pure magic, it's the most ambitious, creative, deep and, ofc, influential. It's not about liking it or not but it's fairly objective that it's way more complex and the most esoteric, even though Jodo leaves most of his thoughts in the lower layers and on surface level it's an enjoyable read, which makes it even greater. Then I'd put the Metabarons because it's very solid, funny and tragic and it has Gimenez, ofc. After that, with some gap, I'd put Before the Incal and Technopriests. On a personal level of engagement I would chose a different order, just saying.
      For the rest:
      - Castaka
      - Megalex
      - Final Incal
      - Weapon of Meta-Baron (the worst, it's fairly similar to Frissen's one, and I don't like Charest that much to be honest, too photorealistic even if not as annoying and sterile as Alex Ross).
      That's my opinion, ofc.
Other Jodo's comics that I really like are, in order: Moon Face (really love it), Mad Woman of the Sacred Heart or however it's translated (may I say that here Jodo > Moebius?), White Lama, Juan Solo and Bouncer.

@@OdysseyMichele I didn't put the rerun to the same level of the original. Frissen chose what he liked among Jodorowsky's whims and then, made a kind of space Conan. That's clearly not the comic book of the century, but that's a continuity that I found respectful and pleasant to read. Concerning Sécher, that's funny that you considered it as an artisan, and at the same Janjetov as an artist, personnally I couldn't recognize a single work of the last, even with a full page, and the reverse is not true. Of course, that's a matter of tastes, for example The Technopriests was maybe one of my worst reads of the author (with Final incal and Pietrolino, from memory). Outside the "Incalverse", I really liked Hannibal V with Bess (I recommand his recent Frankenstein, heartbreaking), one of his funniest work I would say. And The Bouncer, of course. I need to put my hand of the other volumes which are not published by the humanoids in France (and not written by Jodorowsky himself for the lasts). Also,if you want to read some comic strips written and drawn by Jodorowsky himself, there are the Panic Fables, originally published in a Mexican journal (and the whole Panic movement worth to dig it, from Topor to Arrabal).

@@OdysseyMichele For me Metabarons does give The Incal a run for its money. The story almost makes more sense and I think Gimenez's art is better than Moebius for scale and dynamics.

@@kupris2094 I agree that Secher is a far more skillful artist than Janjetov but janjetov also got stuck with that awful, gray and brown computer coloring, so who really know. Moebius looked equally pathetic with that coloring.
Outside of the Jodoverse I quite like his works with Bess and am enjoying these Jodo Library books. Hopefully they collect stuff like his Borgia with Manara, Panic Fabels, etc.

This work make any DC or Marvel stuff so childish. Certainly not for everyone: you need GUTS to enjoy it! R.I.P to master Juan Giménez, who passed away in 2020 because of COVID 19.

The superiority is glaringly obvious with the new Psychoverse book. Yannick Paquette is one of my favorite DC/Marvel style artists and visuals pale in comparison to what the master Gimenez did.
