Let's just be honest. People like him feel that black people don't earn those degrees and that's why he refused to address her appropriately. There's no point in euphemisms. He would never admit what I just said but that's the truth.
Not only did he refuse to call her by her title, but when she corrected him he took a step further and called her by her first name alone just to spite her. That is how I know it was intentional.
I think her blurting it out as he was speaking is what got on his nerves and why he did that. Although as a public official he should be humble enough to change it without degrading her even if she came across as rude.

The reason for this, as I'm sure you know, is that zoom is a multifaceted platform that people use for a multitude of purposes. In fact, I don't know any that add their title to their zoom account (do you add Mr., Ms or Mrs?), which is why she clarified i.e. identified her title earlier in the session. As a Dr. myself, I would never insist that my friends and family members refer to me as 'Dr', and the same with many other day-to-day situations. Only in professional and formal settings, such as this one, would I refer to myself by my title.
If she corrects you and you continue to be a hardass, it's intentional. It's 100% possible to accidentally use the wrong title, especially considering that both men said they didn't have her title written in her name. But she corrects you, you apologize, and move on using the title. It's not hard.
But do you ever call doctorate holders, doctors? I only ever call physicians, doctors. Even pharmacists have doctorates. You would never call a pharmacist a doctor.

I also taught at University extension as a master's holder. Again the term doctor was never used within the halls of University extension. It would be very strange to call engineering PhDs by the term doctor. We never did so. Even after joining software industry, we never called such people doctors. The term Doctor is usually reserved for physicians. Anyway, her title is professor, not doctor. She teaches at a University, so she would be called professor.

The reason for this, as I'm sure you know, is that zoom is a multifaceted platform that people use for a multitude of purposes. In fact, I don't know any that add their title to their zoom account (do you add Mr., Ms or Mrs?), which is why she clarified i.e. identified her title earlier in the session.
As a Dr. myself, I would never insist that my friends and family members refer to me as 'Dr', and the same with many other day-to-day situations. Only in professional and formal settings, such as this one, would I refer to myself by my title.

If she corrects you and you continue to be a hardass, it's intentional. It's 100% possible to accidentally use the wrong title, especially considering that both men said they didn't have her title written in her name. But she corrects you, you apologize, and move on using the title. It's not hard.
But do you ever call doctorate holders, doctors? I only ever call physicians, doctors. Even pharmacists have doctorates. You would never call a pharmacist a doctor.

I also taught at University extension as a master's holder. Again the term doctor was never used within the halls of University extension. It would be very strange to call engineering PhDs by the term doctor. We never did so. Even after joining software industry, we never called such people doctors. The term Doctor is usually reserved for physicians.
Anyway, her title is professor, not doctor. She teaches at a University, so she would be called professor.

He had multiple opportunities to fix the issue during the meeting but stubbornly put his sexism and racism on full display, unable to accept that a woman and a person of color could rise to this level of education and power.
Note that the hallmark of an abuser is a cycle of abuse, apologize, and abuse again. It never changes. An apology does not undo the damage to her image and feelings. Shameful.
I do not agree that she should have accepted anything from this sexist, racist dinosaur who disrespected her in public and is not sorry, nor ever will be. In fact, the only solution is to crush him hard. We have to wipe out these wrongs once and for all. Zero tolerance.

I had a friend in Hawaii that had a PhD in Agricultural Economics and I was highly impressed and thought that was really cool so I called him “Doctor” once and he told me that only his mother calls him “Doctor”. He was an old soul, a real salt of the earth type. I honored his request to address him as he wished. I would also honor this lady’s request to address her as she Doctor.
The reason why phd holders dont ca themselves docotes is because it's slightly embarrassing. They know they dont deserve such a honaraty title, so they wont refer to themselves as a doctor. When signing off a letter or email they'll write phd at the end.
