To me the most signature thing about Ben's vocals is his control, both in tone and enunciation. Every word and sound is clear and deliberate regardless if it's high or low, slow or fast. Even though their overall style has evolved with every album, Ben's control has been insane since the start and I hope to achieve that level of ability with my own vocals one day.
19:55, that was the calmest and slowest, yet most sincere and enthusiastic chair flip I've seen in some time. Also reminds me of when one of my favorite vocalists, also a vocal coach, fell out of his chair while listening to Lifeblood by Brand of Sacrifice.
His most recognized characteristic of his voice are his lows/gutturals, but he also has the most intense highs/screams of any metal vocalist. He is the most seasoned and incredible vocalist I've ever heard.
Elegy has now taken place as my favorite Death Metal album. Melancholy being my favorite Deathcore album. Both being masterpieces. To answer the question though, yes, love the direction SOI are going.
When I think of Ben I don't think of guttarals. I think of Nuttarals. Buttarals even. Saw it on a previous SOI music vid and just stuck with me. Suuuuuch a cavernous, hellish chasm of a voice, but under a heavy controlled leash.
Shadow of intent only drops masterpieces. I am an incredibly large halo nerd and that is the singular reason i dove into their music. primordial and reclaimer are absolute masterpieces, and the lore of those albums being Halo, i have always attributed Ben to sounding like a Brute. Tartarus and Atriox to me are what I am reminded of when Ben opens his mouth. Then Melancholy came out and it was not Halo at all, but a step above the previous two albums, in both maturity, talent and sound. And now we have Elegy. Another 10/10 album and absolute stepping stone in the perfect discography that is Ben Duer and Shadow of Intent.
Thank you for this! Am I the only one who finds Ben vocals truly sexy? This... And I so badly would love to learn this kind of vocals but where I live, no one teaches it.
Worm Shepherd have released a new album and it is FUCKING NUTS!!!! Winter Sun, the last track off the album, is the best song they've ever released. An 8 minute journey. Devin is just stupid good
wanted to drop a comment/question since this is your most recent video as of posting... I have been working on my low/false chord techniques and after a while a start to feel a slight burning in my throat, it feels like its at the back where the growls come through. Now I know you among others have mentioned to stop when you feel pain, but from other experiences, such as working out and building drumming chops, a slight burn is common. I didn't think much of it, but wanted to ask if a slight burn is an 'okay' kind of pain as opposed to other kinds, something that could cause damage. and when i say burn, i mean literally that. It literally feels a little hot and sore at the back of my throat. this also goes out to anyone who has an answer, thanks all! and for the video specifically, i can' t just drop a comment on a video without talking about the video. I love how informative all your content is. This is what is literally causing me to want to learn vocals, and if I had money for lessons, I'd sign up in a heart beat. Keep up the good content, and to those skeptical, this guy knows his shit!
@@KytexEdits I don't see the point in critiquing the album lead up. I think they did a great job on Intensified Genocide, something fairly straightfoward and heavy to let people know they're back and have stuff in the works, then three other releases before the album, but saving the best for the release date. The finished product of Elegy came together beautifully, and it would've been unreasonable to release the best before the rest.
Mark I know you can't do a vocal react to all of Elegy (although that would be shveet 😁) but you should definitely consider doing Saurian King and/or The Coming Fire!!!
@@KardavoxAcademy this is true. Im lucky to have friends who play with me and im glad that there are games like neverwinter nights or baldurs gate. True passion like singing :3
Hey man I suggest reacting to Matthew Barlow, former iced earth, but listen to his work with Iced earth. One of my favorite singers that gives Bruce Dickerson a run for his money with vocal range. Barlow left the band and became a cop but still dabbles. Check him out and you will be amazed at what he has done and still can do…even without that long ass red hair!
Barlow's the fucking man. The newest Ashes of Ares album is pretty good, and the last song on it has him signing with Ripper Owens. Only thing Barlow's done I haven't cared for was Sentinels. The one album he was one with Pyramaze was great.
Imagine if Mark was on "Critical Roll" and got to guest star as an anti-hero/villain bard. I can just imagine him busting out some filthy metal vocals while singing some songs causing fear to inspire the party to do better. Then to finish it off he turns the tables and becomes a dungeon boss.
In the part where you said you felt the back of your mouth closing when I do my highs I feel absolutely nothing in my mouth or throat besides the top. Am I doing it wrong?
I think you're only half right on the volume of Ben's vocals. Some of it does have to do with technique, equipment, sound mixing, but he has said that to achieve his vocals, his voice is much louder than, for instance, a standard speaking volume.
He actually made 2 reactions to cj way back but when he was under fire with the controversy, mark deleted/privated the videos. Same thing with a video he did on greg gilbert from shrine of malice.

His lows are very recognizable to me. Like unmistakably so. But yes his control is ridiculous
I hope you get Devin Duarte from Worm Shepherd on here this year.
Yes! Definitely do one of the new Worm Shepherd songs!
Hell yes!!
YES PLEASE AND COVER MORE WORM SHEPHERD THEYRE AMAZING LIVE AS WELL
Devin's lyrics be like "URUGUGGDFJDFDGFGSFGFSGURRR"
Oh didn't see your comment. I suggested Chalice Ov Rebirth

They never disappoint, Ben continues to amaze me with his vocals!
Hell yeah, Ben is awesome!
Few vocalists ever approach the level Ben's at, and he just keeps getting better.
His most recognized characteristic of his voice are his lows/gutturals, but he also has the most intense highs/screams of any metal vocalist. He is the most seasoned and incredible vocalist I've ever heard.
Im addicted to this band. AOTY for me
The year just started lol
its the middle of fucking january….like Duh
The main guitar rift has Amon Amarth vibes and I love it.
The first time I heard it I thought the exact same thing. This riff sounds similar to the main riff in The Pursuit of Vikings.
The whole song feels very like nymphetamine era cradle of filth and dimmu borgir with an Amon amarth guitar tone
really ? it reminded me more of Kalmah's Hades.
@@surtrgio I immediately thought of three bands when I heard this: Kalmah, Amon Amarth, and Dark Tranquility
We need to get some Amon Amarth on this channel
You need to watch the new one !!! Blood in ands of time... this is insane

i think the most signature ben thing is how controlled yet big and open his vocals sound
1 of their best songs imo.
Diphthong comes from the Greek word δίφθογγος, which means double vowel. The more you know.
You're an absolute legend. Thank you!
ANOTHER DND BEARD!! ☺️
I swear this is their Christmas jam.
The Baring of Shadows looking sick in the back.
Aaaaaye much love :D

Shadow Of Intent are a great band, no doubt!
Not even finished with the first month of the year and the chair has already been thrown. It’s gonna be a great year.
Hahaha, starting off with a bang!
He should react to the whole album!!
The chair throw sent me 😂😂
Haha, glad to hear it!
I really hope you'll do an Invisions analysis sometime soon!
I'll check them out!
The SOI bois are back! Awesome video, I love seeing Mark rocking out!
Hell yeah - I love rocking out!
That's what I call an EPIC GROOVE
Thank you for this! Am I the only one who finds Ben vocals truly sexy? This... And I so badly would love to learn this kind of vocals but where I live, no one teaches it.
You know it's good when the dnd books come out
Hell yeah!
Fucking amazing when you threw your chair!!! I laughed so hard🤘🤘🤘
The album slaps. Very pleased by it.
Edit: also from watching Mark bop along to various songs I think he'd be sick to mosh with.
6:22 that's that Connecticut accent coming out haha
I’ve been writing a home brew all day, so I go on UA-cam and my dude talks about DND. I got unreasonably excited
I'm all about that DnD!
I would love to see your reaction to Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox one take performance of “Circle with Me” it gave me chills
It's not the one-take version, but the song was analysed here: ua-cam.com/video/mBo5uf9ETuM/v-deo.html
Never hears of the band until the newest album came out, but it kicks ass.
Ooh, very cool.
3:30 is this kinda like the “Cookie Monster” technique?

I had the same thought about the dimmu and cradle vibes lol
Definitely!
Yeah that first section I was also thinking this is extreme vocals over power metal.
You gotta invite Guillaume Villeneuve or Devin Duarte for future co-reaction videos!
That would be dope!
Pillhead or My Old Ways from the Plot In You. Landon is so underrated. Whole album slaps
They should've done this as a single before dropping the album IMO. This is a great song.
They did. Just didn't release the video until the album dropped.
@@evanblake5252 Yes, that's my whole point. I think this song for example is much more exciting than intensified genocide.

SOI is getting closer to (north-europa) melodic death metal mixed with some symphonic black.....reminds me of a slow Kalmah
Is that a King 810 mug?
I really hope to see a reaction/analysis of 10000 by Beyond Deviation.
How far into learning “regular” vocals would you recommend someone starting to learn these guttural vocals?
Mark I know you can't do a vocal react to all of Elegy (although that would be shveet 😁) but you should definitely consider doing Saurian King and/or The Coming Fire!!!
Saurian king is easily the best song on the album. Blood in the sands of time is fantastic as well.
D&D is always an option! nice video! like always :D

I'll check it out!
ok ffs my guy u are just honest to god a nice person xd i just wanna hang with u and talk about metal xd
Haha, thanks!
You need to do A Prophets Beckoning with Ben Duerr and Tom Barber it is one of the best songs.
In the part where you said you felt the back of your mouth closing when I do my highs I feel absolutely nothing in my mouth or throat besides the top. Am I doing it wrong?
How do you go from a grunt to a “growl”???
would love to see something from The Contortionist :^) need some more prog now and again eh

No love for the Artificer?
I don't know why but for me it feels like power metal whit Deathcore vocal and breakdown
Please nowwwww🙏🙏🙏🙏
Another great video, I’ve been waiting for a chair throw or a knife attack. It’s been a long time and I know I am not the only person who believes so

CJ from Signs of the Swarm/Lorna Shore 👌
