That 5.0L N/A V8 engine from Lexus is always a treat to listen to and experience. The sound is so amazing, and I am going to miss this V8 go away in the next couple of years. That interior and exterior still reminds me why I love Lexus as my favourite Japanese luxury brand. Plus, Lexus has something other European brands don't have going for them, and that is reliability. You can drive this car for years, and nothing will go wrong with it. Lexus is a brand that has perfected luxury and reliability in one formula, and I applaud Lexus for that.

@@TopherDrives One of the last few cars you can get with a V8, and not just any V8, it's naturally aspirated, which is even more rare these days. I mean you were able to get N/A V8s from BMW from their E90-E92 M3 with that 4.0L V8, Mercedes with their 6.2L N/A V8 in the mid 2000s AMG cars, Audi with their 4.2L N/A V8 in the B8 RS 4 and RS 5. But sad to see those go.

Fun fact: that “CD” slot also plays more than music. You can watch DVDs when the car is in park. I haven’t checked to see if it plays blueray though but once I get the chance to dust off my other DVD collection, I’ll update you guys.
Update: I confirmed it doesn’t play blue ray. I tried getting it to play Fast 7 and Dark Knight Rises and both CDs gave an error saying “Check Disc”. But when I inserted the regular DVD Rom version, it played just fine.

Awesome to see this car on your channel. I love that you are bringing that perspective of being a longtime 1IS owner. The induction thingy you're describing is actually a flap in the airbox! There's a vacuum line running to the airbox that activates at close to 3000 RPM and opens up an additional passage to the airbox. It's pretty fun to play with when you've got the hood open. 🤣
I agree with you on the whole "driving it flat-out or a grandma" thing. None of this 6/10ths nonsense - give it the full beans! It really behaves better at higher RPM and throttle inputs.
Edit: Also FWIW I have not had any audio issues with Android Auto.

I have a 2022 Premium and the ML system has never popped with CarPlay. Admittedly, I only have the sound system on 5%-10% of the time, because the V8 is the only soundtrack I prefer. 🙂 Personally I am glad the IS500 has a split personality with noting in between. I think most of us will either be in leisure or balls-out mode, for me I am an aggressive driver so I stay in Manual and Sport S+ all day every day. 😈 The engine will switch to the Atkinson Cycle at highway speeds, that's why the MPG is as good as it as considering its V8'ness. Thanks so much for posting!!

I have a is 250 2013 and I got it from my mother which I had 160k miles or so. I took that car from CA to AK and will go back to CA but it's an amazing car. The only two major complaints I had is cup holder is so small that almost unusable so I had to get a cup holder wedge that slides in between the seat and middle console. Thr size is like a wide mouth Gatorade. That and the back seat is tight hard to get in and out.
But other then that it's been a trooper and I hope to get 500k or more miles on that car and it managed everything I put at it.
Also I always have the ect pwr switch on at all times. I find it it's better in handling, breaking, and accerlation is better. There were times when it wasn't on the breaking was jolty and sluggish. So don't know why that would be the case but with that switch on its smooth driving.

is500 is definitely a welcome addition at a solid price compared to the heavy hitters (m3, amg, audi rs) of luxury, which I feel like are the competitors once you start talking v8 luxury. I like that you mentioned that it was small, and I definitely agree with that. it's 3 series, c class sized footprint. It would be interesting to see this motor dropped into a Lexus SUV chassis (NX or RX) and have it be competing with those fast luxury SUVs. it would be really interesting to see it just because the price point seems really solid and I think it'd really give some extra comfort for highway and everyday driving, because lets be honest, this isn't what you're buying as a track car.

If this car is even half as comfy or as good of car as my LS460 was then I would be happy to try to the smaller chassis for improved handling and some more hp.
But then I remember I'm getting old and that I would rather keep my 🤑

For a much more relaxing road trip experience, a pre-2020 Genesis G80 can also de found with the NA V8 5.0 engine and an 8-speed automatic. Not as free-revving but extremely smooth at cruise rpm with the quietest cabin I’ve experienced (measured dB has been below that of similar Lexus cruisers). At you could find one for less than half the price of a new IS500. Also, that initial generation of the G80 has been Lexus-like in reliability. I currently own a 2017 G80 with the NA V6 3.8. No problems at all so far. If I find a G80 V8, my cross shopping would be this IS500. At current pricing, the G80 is simply a lot more car. And it’s Lexicon audio is possibly at or above the Mark Levinson.

Owned both G80 5.0 rwd and GSF. The Genesis is the better cruiser, quieter, more luxurious, loaded with tech and superior transmission tuning. The GSF handled better, faster, looked sharper, and that SOUND!!! But it was a more delicate car, lacked severely in the tech department, and the maintenance was much more expensive than that of the Genesis. Both developed issues with the high pressure fuel pumps which appeared to be sourced from the same supplier. Both, of course, replaced under warranty. The 5.0 in the GSF is both port and direct injected so with time it shouldn't experience carbon deposits on the intake valves unlike the Genesis which is direct injection only and the valves will need to be walnut blasted past 60k miles. However, despite the G80 being a heavier car by about 600lbs, it consumed less fuel than the GSF. I averaged 33mpg hwy with the G80 on light foot vs. 29mpg with the GSF under the same conditions. The G80 could also take regular fuel unlike the GSF. In terms of performance, G80 could do 5 seconds to 60 and 13.4 qtr mile quite consistently / GSF about 4.5 seconds to 60 and 12.9 qtr mile. If the G80 weighed about the same, I wouldn't be surprised if it could match or surpass GSF numbers. The one thing I hated in the GSF was the transmission, very imprecise and slow to react albeit manual mode did make a considerable improvement with shifts. It just didn't feel as crisp or as refined as the 8-speed in the G80 which is rather embarrassing, especially since the G80 is tuned for smooth cruising and comfort. And then there was the pricing... $57K was what Genesis asked for a new, loaded 5.0 G80 vs $83K for the GSF...

Road noise sounds pretty quiet on the highway. Even though the is is an older entry level luxury platform, would you say this car is still quieter than a Honda accord or a Toyota Camry for example? It’s really hard to tell from videos like this

This or CT4V- Blackwing? Which one stirs the soul more? IS500 lags in performance, but I bet better tires would close the gap a bit.
Those BBS wheels are more like a standard feature than an "option". Lexus seems to be equipping more with than not. It's a shame everything is red, and not red and black.

It depends on what you want out of the car. If you want a cruiser that is fun to drive and reliable, go Lexus. If you want a canyon-road or track-day beast that is still practical, get the Cadillac. Honestly, the cars are very, very different.

I considered an IS500 a couple of months ago but the test drive left me a bit dissappointed. The V8 was the big draw but found the car mostly unresponsive unless it was in sport + with heavy throttle. My 2019 G70 3.3t had more useable power. I still like the IS500 but ended up with a 2023 G70 after test driving the IS500, M340i and S5. It's just a great, well rounded car and I needed AWD as well.

    • @davidd7175
      @davidd7175 8 місяців тому

“needed AWD”..the IS5 wouldn’t have met the needs then? I’ve always liked the S5 sport back, the body lines and the interior. However I personally have a thing for a NA V8 now..maybe I’m just getting old.
