I want to get back into hunting so bad. Money is tight right now and I can’t get a bow that I want. It rather just get a nice one that I feel confident in than a cheap deal. I have over 300 acres to hunt private land but depression has gotten the better of me the last few years. Dan really is starting to light the fire in me to get back at it. Used to hunt every week a few times a week, but the last 3 years I’ve hunted 3 mornings. Thanks dan for being down to earth and really giving us a piece of your knowledge. A real hunter no doubt. I hunt the Atchafalaya basin swamp in south Louisiana and there are no give me's, You have to earn it. The basin floods every year, sometimes multiple times. Beds are very hard to find because the land is always changing. Your scouting abilities amaze me, I learn something from every video you make.
Chris Henson I also hunt the basin. Cool to see someone else from this area following the beast. Have you had any success applying Dan’s tactic in the basin?

We just have the water constantly changing the landscape, so the old beds and rubs are just not there. What part of the basin do you hunt? I'm from Cecilia and hunt Indian bayou, and Sherburne. I go in by skiff with mud motor to avoid the heavier pressure
19:21.....this ONE lesson from Dan a few years ago did more to help my hunting than anything I've learned in the past 20 years. I've had lots of success hunting public land in MS, but there are a couple places that just kicked my butt year after year. I always played the wind direction obsessively, but I wasn't seeing deer - in places where i KNOW deer are plentiful. Dan helped me understand the importance of THERMALS, especially when thermals mix with "hills 'n hollers," as we say down here! The primary wind direction could be 15mph NE, which should be PERFECT for one of my main spots, yet I'd go 5 hunts in a row without seeing deer. It was maddening! Then after learning more about thermals and how they interact with hill country - and obtaining a big supply of milkweed! - everything changed. Thanks Dan! You are helping hunters all over!
The kayaking , the hiking, the deep dives make all of this better. Hard earned is sweeter, creates an epic mindset for the win. The goats, didn't teach me anything, it was sweet just a different flavor.
Dan, without my dad giving me a "goat on a rope" I would never be the hunter I am today. He also gave me the desire to find out why the deer use certain areas. Of course my strategy now is to scout for fresh sign and use many different techniques to hunt/harvest deer, ground or tree, it really depends on what will be the most ideal based on the fresh sign.
Get out of that liberal area Dan and come up to northwest Wisconsin! Great public land opportunities with good bucks around! And it's all red up here, no blue!

My first time bow hunting with a borrowed recurve bow in 1976.. very much the same type of property.. small wood lot surrounded by houses... not expecting much to happen then two bucks walked right up to maybe 10 yards away.., shot my arrow right into a tree... I was hooked! Lived in lower Michigan and had hunted with my dad and brothers in mid-north Michigan.
F the GOAT ON A ROPE! Im brand new to bow and public land hunting in SE WI and I'm definitely working for it/working on it. I'm trying to expand my knowledge on scouting...especially from a screen (job keeps me from boots on the ground). I just finally did walk a SMALL piece/hunted that I thought (and heard) would be killer. No buck sign anywhere, only bedding, and tons of trails to and from. Looks like its time to switch to plan B already. Thank you for all the insight you provide, I'm definitely going to keep watching these videos! If I don't kill anything this year, at least I'll be that much closer to providing myself the opportunity to next season. Hunting Beast is knowledge!

I have ONE spot where I got a GOAT ON A ROPE. It so so enjoyable. It sometimes takes a lifetime of hunting to find a spot like that. When you do find that spot it’s a lot of fun. Love your videos
I would like to think anybody who watches your videos prefers to earn their way. Kinda what the hunting beast means to me. People who prefer to go head to head with the odds to earn a buck. You’re an inspiration to somebody like me who could hunt the same 3-4 private pieces all year, to get out of my comfort zone and learn new areas and earn on a buck on public. Good video as usual

I always would rather hunt hard and earn it. BUT, there are times well into November when I've been hunting hard for the last month and I'm cold, wet, and tired. Then a "goat on a rope" looks pretty damn good.

Been hunting archery elk for 12 years out west, coming from the mideast. I'm 3 bulls and one cow in that time frame. So I've had a 5 year dry spell. My wife offered to get me a guide for my 50th birthday. I respectfully declined... Just doesn't jive with me, someone else with the ability to say "I put him on this animal". I'd rather eat tag soup. What a woman though👍
I remember about 15 years ago we would see about a 180 class buck that was bedding in the median around Johnsons on our way to work in Milwaukee saw him about dozen times over two month time period October - November he was apparently very good at frogger
That last hunt just reminded me so much of this park that I go to from time to time where there's just monster bucks and deer everywhere that come right up to you. Cannot hunt there obviously, but it's a great place to learn the behavior. Between going out there and watching your videos it has put me into hunting scenarios that I've never had the pleasure to be in. Thanks again for everything that you do Dan, GO GET 'EM!!!
Love the new phrase " A goat on a rope " perfect lmao. I hunt urban areas in a little bigger city and its a whole new animal. U have to approach hunting those spots differently than regular out in the country spots.
I grew up urban hunting and cannot count the times I had kids underneath my stand and deer showed up within 5 minutes of them leaving. Big bucks and lots of does, and they were so used to the intrusion that the people didn’t bother them the way they do in the bigger woods. I would’ve sat that out for sure.
I love the way you explain everything Dan, no goat on a rope here. I hunt small ag woods where deer travel is erratic at best so being able to learn travel routes and bedding areas is king. Keep up the great work!!!
Ok either way. Use to your success with "goats" and understand it's more difficult scouting new areas. Probably would rather see your thinking on new areas and hope you setups develop into a big buck...
Love this analogy. Goat on a rope! Hunting is so much more fun when you figure out the pattern of deer at that time and execute your plan to take advantage of a deers' weakness.
The lower Wisconsin riverway used to hold a ton of deer. Decades of getting pounded have pushed them back in the hills. Good call on going on the south side of 133, that probably would have been your best bet to try to catch a doe before last light. You're right on hitting it late October/early November, but you'll be fighting everyone else for a tree.
See my 1 year ago comment just below this. Took some tips about wind and thermals this year; 1/4 from hilltop also. Shot two big bucks (by Maryland stds), and a strike. My problem is now how to get on does! I got bucks figured out, I think.
The goat is exactly why I don't hunt over bait. Absolutely no challenge. Where's the fun in guarding a bait pile. If it's legal and a guy wants to do that, fine. I'd rather scout, have fun and enjoy the process. Great stuff Dan.
I do all my own scouting all year long. I can never get hunting out of my head. I'm addicted to the chase. i tried hunting with groups and it don't work for me. I'd rather earn it than be spoon fed.
I love watching videos like this. I’m from New Jersey and only hunt public land and go through all the same stuff. Makes it more challenging and when you do connect it’s a great feeling of accomplishment. Hard work does pay off and most of the time it’s a grind. Keep the videos coming 👍🏻

38:20 looks like that deer is being hand fed by some old granny, tame as a poodle. Kids outside playing, now a days that is rarer than a 12 pint buck. Can't even remember the last time I've seen kids even riding a bike down the road. But as you said those deer are used to all those people and won't be spooked by you walking through and hunting.
Deer are definitely used to humans in an area like that. I got an opportunity to hunt this bow season at an abandoned detention center in southeastern Wisconsin. Groundskeepers still work there maintaining the area. First day i hunted kicked up lots of huge does in the morning, I hunted that evening as well right after the maintenance workers got done mowing the grass but didn’t see anything my buddy saw a small doe but didn’t wanna take her , next morning at 6:40 i had a 9 point he was probably a 2 year old buck no older then that come out at 35 yards shot him he ran about 100 yards no blood what so ever. My buddy and I started to comb the area in a 100 yard radius and i found him in a thicket no blood around him what so ever but it was a double lung hit. When field dressing him there was about a gallon of blood in the chest cavity. Best bow hunting experience ever!
@@stefanpozder8376 I meant the property in particular, lot of those places have a "lottery" or drawing and only let a certain amount of people in. Whomever gets drawn gets to hunt on the property, that sort of thing.
I started hunting last year, and even though I have been watching as many of these instructional videos as possible, nothing beats boots on the ground. It’s hard for me to know if what I’m e-scouting and then seeing in person is comparable to what you explain as “good fresh sign”. So to answer your question, at this present moment I’d prefer “A Goat on the Rope”. At least then I’d have an opportunity to see what good fresh sign looks like in person. I’d have a good basis to judge all prospective scouting sites against in the future. Just one workin mans humble opinion
I enjoy working for it but in a little different way than how you guys do it. I predominately hunt private but do a lot of habitat management projects to improve the land and attract all sorts of critters. It’s a lot of hard work all off season, then a lot of observation seeing how deer respond to it during season. Love the show and content! Happy hunting and good luck this season!
Work for it this video came at an awesome time for me i was getting a little discouraged at my tactics 4 sits this year and a doe and 2button bucks so far , good sign but no deer ,I've hunted 4 different areas just not far enough in going in deep on sat 1st big cold front comes in
Dan you should be getting ready for Pennsylvania. Those hills in Wisconsin are half the size of the Pennsylvania ridges. But with 23 million acres of public available you might find a piece of ground that you can handle. Haha. Trolling you . You're in for a nice challenge. I wish you luck. Northern tier counties or the big woods you'd love. The Tuscarora mountains down here can be a challenge. That advice is from a 63 year old Traditional Beast.🦌✌
No one that I personally know puts in anywhere near the time I do scouting ,preparing and hunting, that said, I would love to have a goat on a rope once in a while.
I go both ways..i would have set up in that area you said was good.nothing was handed to anyone..you still have to pull off the shot and get it done if Mr big walks by. So many guys talk down on baiting and the goat on a rope theory but yet they only shoot nice bucks during the rut .which in my opinion is the easiest way to kill a trophy.
Love the videos Dan! I'd rather work for it. I shot my last buck with a bow in 2010 in Indiana. Moved to Texas in 2011 and started hunting public land. I did go on some private land hunts but all low fence, I'd say semi guided and playing the wind. I never once picked up a rifle and finally shot another buck with my bow opening day evening (Oct. 3rd) this year on private land. Now I am going to work on killing my first public land buck! Can't wait for the next video!
I definetely feel better if i figure out a spot for myself rather than being told to sit there or there. The figuring out part adds a lot to the hunting experience for me.

Hey Dan, Love the video! I like this series of you showing what you go through to get on deer. I actually thought about your goat on a rope video a few weeks ago prior to this video coming out. I have a spot where I hunt and like clock work every year I have a shot at a big buck. A guy that I know moved in and put up a lock on real close to where I hunt. I was a bit up set then it accrued to me that I think it is time to go figure out another spot/area and I became at piece with it. Then, I got real excited about looking at topo maps of places I wanted to go but I had that spot. I think I have come to want to go out and find them.
Me too, but when season is winding down I get real tempted to take one of those slow elk I see on public land. Just have to make it past the rancher and the brand inspector without getting caught.😄
Personally ... I rather have a Buck on my rope . I'm learning Dan. I'm hunting a long narrow strip between between a marsh and Ag land. I figured some stuff out but the trail into the marsh has always intimidated me because of lack of experience with them. As you talk as you walk I get flash backs to certain similar situations on my spot. I'm taking it all in, thanks
It depends. If I’m desperate for venison steak on the grill then give me the “goat on the rope,” but otherwise I prefer the challenge of figuring it out. Makes you feel more alive, and if you get on deer (even if you fail to harvest one) it’s way more rewarding than “the goat on the rope.”

The chase is the thrill for me. I get bored on private land. I have a spot I could go sit that has probably a 80% chance of having at least does. And Theres a young piebald buck on all three trail cameras thy we also saw in person while setting up on of the camera. Still I’ve yet to hunt it this year. I keep finding myself chasing deer on public because the pursuit is what is so thrilling. Of course you still want to connect with that buck and fling some arrows but having it handed to you is so boring I rather stay home. If you ever want to come to Oklahoma let me know!!

I was just debating this right before this episode. Go to private where there's a lot of deer running around or go to the overlooked public and go for the unknown...I'm going for the unknown.
Goat on a rope...nope. I'm on a municipal piece about 150 acres that is capped at 12 hunters. Half the guys hunt in the front of the property because historically, big bucks come from private across the street. I been on there 4 years and focus on the back half of the property because I want to "hunt" and figure it out. I learn more about the place every year. It's a lot of fun.
I like to earn it, but I can't really say I've ever had the goat on a rope options. I've been doe hunting recently and it's been a big struggle even doing that on public. Enjoyed this video. If you ever need candy, it's an easy trip for me....I'd be happy to send some.
Think back to our own individual lives of all the things we appreciate the most. Weight loss, a job, a degree etc... they’re all things we’ve worked the hardest for. No goat on a rope for me!
I'm trying to teach my kids how to hunt white tail so for me its important for them to see and experience how rewarding it is to harvest an animal that you put so much work into hunting . I think it helps develop that life long passion and work ethic that translates into other aspects of life . Dont get me wrong , there have been many days that I wished God would have dropped an old bruiser in my lap . But it just wouldn't be the same
I just left pennyrile and had the same type of encounter across of where I camped. I could almost walk up to the deer and pet them. I tried to make myself hunt them but I just couldn't. It was To me like shooting someones pet dog or something. So I ventured into the hills and found a 2 great bucks both of which busted me at the last minute. My heart mind and body were happy to get skunked rather than shoot the tame ones in the park

Hunting is so much more fun when you figure out the pattern of deer at that time and execute your plan to take advantage of a deers' weakness.
The lower Wisconsin riverway used to hold a ton of deer. Decades of getting pounded have pushed them back in the hills. Good call on going on the south side of 133, that probably would have been your best bet to try to catch a doe before last light. You're right on hitting it late October/early November, but you'll be fighting everyone else for a tree.
See my 1 year ago comment just below this. Took some tips about wind and thermals this year; 1/4 from hilltop also. Shot two big bucks (by Maryland stds), and a strike. My problem is now how to get on does! I got bucks figured out, I think.
The goat is exactly why I don't hunt over bait. Absolutely no challenge. Where's the fun in guarding a bait pile. If it's legal and a guy wants to do that, fine. I'd rather scout, have fun and enjoy the process. Great stuff Dan.
I do all my own scouting all year long. I can never get hunting out of my head. I'm addicted to the chase. i tried hunting with groups and it don't work for me. I'd rather earn it than be spoon fed.
I love watching videos like this. I’m from New Jersey and only hunt public land and go through all the same stuff. Makes it more challenging and when you do connect it’s a great feeling of accomplishment. Hard work does pay off and most of the time it’s a grind. Keep the videos coming 👍🏻

Kids outside playing, now a days that is rarer than a 12 pint buck. Can't even remember the last time I've seen kids even riding a bike down the road.
But as you said those deer are used to all those people and won't be spooked by you walking through and hunting.
Deer are definitely used to humans in an area like that. I got an opportunity to hunt this bow season at an abandoned detention center in southeastern Wisconsin. Groundskeepers still work there maintaining the area. First day i hunted kicked up lots of huge does in the morning, I hunted that evening as well right after the maintenance workers got done mowing the grass but didn’t see anything my buddy saw a small doe but didn’t wanna take her , next morning at 6:40 i had a 9 point he was probably a 2 year old buck no older then that come out at 35 yards shot him he ran about 100 yards no blood what so ever. My buddy and I started to comb the area in a 100 yard radius and i found him in a thicket no blood around him what so ever but it was a double lung hit. When field dressing him there was about a gallon of blood in the chest cavity. Best bow hunting experience ever!

@@stefanpozder8376 I meant the property in particular, lot of those places have a "lottery" or drawing and only let a certain amount of people in. Whomever gets drawn gets to hunt on the property, that sort of thing.

I started hunting last year, and even though I have been watching as many of these instructional videos as possible, nothing beats boots on the ground. It’s hard for me to know if what I’m e-scouting and then seeing in person is comparable to what you explain as “good fresh sign”. So to answer your question, at this present moment I’d prefer “A Goat on the Rope”. At least then I’d have an opportunity to see what good fresh sign looks like in person. I’d have a good basis to judge all prospective scouting sites against in the future. Just one workin mans humble opinion
I enjoy working for it but in a little different way than how you guys do it. I predominately hunt private but do a lot of habitat management projects to improve the land and attract all sorts of critters. It’s a lot of hard work all off season, then a lot of observation seeing how deer respond to it during season.

Dan you should be getting ready for Pennsylvania. Those hills in Wisconsin are half the size of the Pennsylvania ridges. But with 23 million acres of public available you might find a piece of ground that you can handle.

No one that I personally know puts in anywhere near the time I do scouting ,preparing and hunting, that said, I would love to have a goat on a rope once in a while.

I go both ways..i would have set up in that area you said was good.nothing was handed to anyone..you still have to pull off the shot and get it done if Mr big walks by. So many guys talk down on baiting and the goat on a rope theory but yet they only shoot nice bucks during the rut .which in my opinion is the easiest way to kill a trophy.
Love the videos Dan! I'd rather work for it. I shot my last buck with a bow in 2010 in Indiana. Moved to Texas in 2011 and started hunting public land. I did go on some private land hunts but all low fence, I'd say semi guided and playing the wind. I never once picked up a rifle and finally shot another buck with my bow opening day evening (Oct. 3rd) this year on private land. Now I am going to work on killing my first public land buck! Can't wait for the next video!

Hey Dan, Love the video! I like this series of you showing what you go through to get on deer. I actually thought about your goat on a rope video a few weeks ago prior to this video coming out. I have a spot where I hunt and like clock work every year I have a shot at a big buck. A guy that I know moved in and put up a lock on real close to where I hunt. I was a bit up set then it accrued to me that I think it is time to go figure out another spot/area and I became at piece with it. Then, I got real excited about looking at topo maps of places I wanted to go but I had that spot. I think I have come to want to go out and find them.
It's so much sweeter when you earn it. No goats on ropes for me.
I love working it for it, but when the season is almost over and the freezer is still empty.... well mutton starts looking pretty good 😂
Me too, but when season is winding down I get real tempted to take one of those slow elk I see on public land. Just have to make it past the rancher and the brand inspector without getting caught.😄

I'm learning Dan. I'm hunting a long narrow strip between between a marsh and Ag land. I figured some stuff out but the trail into the marsh has always intimidated me because of lack of experience with them.
As you talk as you walk I get flash backs to certain similar situations on my spot.

It depends. If I’m desperate for venison steak on the grill then give me the “goat on the rope,” but otherwise I prefer the challenge of figuring it out. Makes you feel more alive, and if you get on deer (even if you fail to harvest one) it’s way more rewarding than “the goat on the rope.”
Always pass the goats... takes all the enjoyment out of it!

I have to find my own spots and pick my own tree. I work hard for the deer I shoot and I get a lot of satisfaction from earning everything I get.
The chase is the thrill for me. I get bored on private land. I have a spot I could go sit that has probably a 80% chance of having at least does. And Theres a young piebald buck on all three trail cameras thy we also saw in person while setting up on of the camera. Still I’ve yet to hunt it this year. I keep finding myself chasing deer on public because the pursuit is what is so thrilling. Of course you still want to connect with that buck and fling some arrows but having it handed to you is so boring I rather stay home. If you ever want to come to Oklahoma let me know!!
The work, the chase, and the struggle is the best part of the hunt. The kill is just a bonus.

Good show Dan! I’d actually rather work hard and kill nothing than the “goat on a rope”. Although I do get pretty frustrated when I’ve done the work and make serval sits and see nothing at all.
I prefer to do it myself. Sometimes though it’s nice to have the pressure taken off and just enjoy a sit and another perspective.
I was just debating this right before this episode. Go to private where there's a lot of deer running around or go to the overlooked public and go for the unknown...I'm going for the unknown.

Goat on a rope...nope. I'm on a municipal piece about 150 acres that is capped at 12 hunters. Half the guys hunt in the front of the property because historically, big bucks come from private across the street. I been on there 4 years and focus on the back half of the property because I want to "hunt" and figure it out. I learn more about the place every year. It's a lot of fun.
I like to earn it, but I can't really say I've ever had the goat on a rope options. I've been doe hunting recently and it's been a big struggle even doing that on public. Enjoyed this video. If you ever need candy, it's an easy trip for me....I'd be happy to send some.
Think back to our own individual lives of all the things we appreciate the most. Weight loss, a job, a degree etc... they’re all things we’ve worked the hardest for.

I'm trying to teach my kids how to hunt white tail so for me its important for them to see and experience how rewarding it is to harvest an animal that you put so much work into hunting . I think it helps develop that life long passion and work ethic that translates into other aspects of life . Dont get me wrong , there have been many days that I wished God would have dropped an old bruiser in my lap . But it just wouldn't be the same

I just left pennyrile and had the same type of encounter across of where I camped. I could almost walk up to the deer and pet them. I tried to make myself hunt them but I just couldn't. It was To me like shooting someones pet dog or something. So I ventured into the hills and found a 2 great bucks both of which busted me at the last minute. My heart mind and body were happy to get skunked rather than shoot the tame ones in the park
