Coach Welke was my high school baseball coach in '67 & '68 in Tigerton, Wisconsin. He was a great baseball man even then, though he didn't have a lot to work with. He played me at 2nd base as a freshman and let me lead off since I was a great bunter. Soon, he discovered that if the lead-off hitter didn't get on, I couldn't handle a high school curve ball. He moved me to the 9th position in the line-up-all glove, no stick! He is a very good man whose sense of human decency shone forth even in those early years. My friend, Dale Clark, who was probably one of the most talented basketball players in the state, told me that Coach Welke was his most important influence as a student. Dale is a really good guy-so that is a great testament. Congratulations to Coach Welke for a great career!
