Elvis wasn't kidding about Parker being a blood sucker. He showed up to Elvis's funeral in a Hawaiian shirt claiming Elvis owed him money. Tom Parker died a hated man and alone. I guess that's some justice.
Quite the irony that Parker's estate by the time of his death in 1997 was estimated to be worth about $1 million, when at its perk in the early 70s the estate was worth an estimated $100 million. Money never made Parker happy go lucky.
Parker was married at the time of his death to his secretary, who had been in his employment since 1972.
Parker turned up at Elvis' funeral wearing a Hawaiian shirt, his trademark cigar, and a fedora. Many mourners considered his outfit inappropriate for the occasion and that he seemed very reluctant to go near the casket.

The constant work load contributed in part to Elvis’ drug use. The Colonel was so low as to stoop to immediately having memorabilia made and sold after Elvis died. He should have been in mourning. Honestly, I would have still fired him, sold the jet, a few cars, and auctioned off a few iconic stage costumes. Anything to keep Colonel Parker out of the picture.
I'd hope I would do the same but you never know until you're in that situation.
The thing is, I don't think EP really understood how many opportunities he had. He could have gone to any record label for the world tour for the 8 million sum and he was so famous so many people would have funded it and got him out from the Colonel. I wish someone around him would have explained the prospects he had for getting out of that situation. I genuinely think Elvis could raise a million dollars quite easily if he would have been creative, do it 8 times and ta-dah, no more Colonel.
It was probably easier just to stay the course. Humans are creatures of habit by our nature.

Emotionally Elvis needed to let go of Parker, and his father, Vernon ( who may or may not have been lining his own pockets according to another video I checked out ). The main moochers were the Memphis Mafia members and "Doctor" Nick and the greedy, gold digging Priscilla! Elvis could have gone over to another label as you stated but Elvis was still clinging to the past. The world of music was changing during the 1960's. Poor Elvis! His friends should’ve seen how the colonel was using him, they should’ve stopped and helped him with his drug use, and they should’ve help take care of him and watch out for him. Elvis had great friends, but Elvis just didn’t want to listen to them when it came to his health, but his friends should’ve seen what the colonel was doing to him.

Tom Hanks played a great Col Parker; I don't care what others think. He got Parker's nuances perfectly. Just makes me sick to see Parker saying to Elvis, "You and I are the same. We are two lonely children." No, Parker, you rob Elvis and everything he worked hard for. If you and he were two lonely children, you would have allowed him his artistic freedom, worked with other artists, sang the songs he wanted to sing, and did the movie roles he wanted to do. He thrived on his artistry, and for you to rob him of that really killed him. You NEVER, EVER rob a person of their artistry. I fear the same for Britney Spears; her family and others are doing the same things by exploiting her, robbing her of her artistic freedom, even though she is free from her conservatorship, she still needs LEGITIMATE help. Or Whitney Houston, the record company wanted to make her the girl-next-door pop princess, but in her heart, she was a troubled person wanting to break free from that image. She had the potential to be an exceptional actress and singer and could have done a rock album if she wanted to, with the gifted voice she had. But it was all about the image of being the daughter of a gospel legend; she was truly exploited by her family and her record company. And the list of artists goes on........
I agree he did a good performance. He even managed to do the fact that the colonel in real life would often try to disguise his Dutch accent, and pass it off as a southern one. My only complaint is that his fat suit looks a little goofy.
Not to mention that Elvis could never do a World Tour as the "Colonel" couldn't get a passport considering he was an illegal immigrant in America.

Well Dave Hebler said it best when him and Sonny West was interviewed on August 17th 1977 'How do you protect a man from himself?'. They tried as much as they could. Elvis was his own worst enemy. After Elvis' tragic death, everyone was looking for someone to blame but sadly, the only person who was to blame was Elvis. Its not like the warnings signs weren't there. He nearly died 3 times in 1973.

The last hour of the film captured perfectly how Elvis’s life unraveled in the 1970s. The first part of the film depicting his early year wasn’t so great.
Oscar doesnt matter its only your legacy that matters. I heard leo didnt win in wolf of wall street but we still talk about it 10 years later and i cant even remember who “won” that year nor do i care. Leo can be proud of his work its the memories its the ppl who matter and how the movie touches us and lives on through us, not what some silly judges think.

Exactly, sometimes NOT winning the Oscar is the best thing that can happen to a performance. People continue to talk about it as legendary and with incredulity that it didn't win. People will be talking about what Butler did with Elvis for a very long time. Total transformation to the point where I can't even see the actor at all.

In reality the contract wasn't worth the paper it written on and that was proved in a court case after Elvis's death. Parker was a con man who didn't care about Elvis's health or welfare and only saw him a meal ticket so he could pay off his massive gambling debts.
Only problem with paid off Parker's massive gambling debts estimated to be $30 million by the time of EP's death in 1977 into today's money with inflation over $150 million, absolutely ridiculous amount EP wouldn't never fully paid off the debts due to the fact Parker even after EP never stopped gambling so new debts would occur. It's was a constant ferris wheel of a downward spiral for both men. 😢

Its hard to imagine how effective Parker was at making Elvis. In about 2 years time Parker took Elvis from a local novelty act to a superstar When Elvis wanted to make serious movies it was Parker who kept him making pop musicals where his limited acting ability was better suited.
Parker was a Vampire, but he sank his fangs into a willing victim and kept his promises, seductive as they were.
The Colonel was an old carny, he knew how to sell an act. You mix that with the *limitless talent* of someone like Elvis, and....you get The King of Rock & Roll.

Even in the mid 70s when EP's health was in serious decline he was still getting serious offers to perform aboard. 1975 Saudi Arabia offered Parker $10 million to perform in the country Parker turned down the offer, $2.5 million from South American countries. EP at his worse was still in huge demand. If EP had left Parker he could have literally named his own price to perform at concerts and events, he would definitely have outlasted Parker 1000× over.
I don't believe this is the way it went down and I don't think Elvis and the Colonels relationship was this bad. Contentious at times, but the Colonel was part of the reason Elvis was revered, through his marketing the Colonel was brilliant at making Elvis - Elvis.

It was in 1973 when Col. Parker inked a new deal with RCA, giving him 50 percent of everything Elvis earned., and sold his publishing, which could have brought in steady money and control of his music. Vernon didn't help matters any. Parker developed a gambling addiction and needed the money to pay it off or else put Elvis and his friends and family in danger. I believe that was why Elvis feared Lisa Marie being kidnapped when she was growing up because of Parker's recklessness.

Only years later was the catalog discovered to be literally priceless in the music industry but by then it was too late, any songs before 1973 Elvis Presley Enterprises receives no royalties, but also around 1973 EP was looking for funds for his divorce so instructed Parker to help him raise the funds.
