Once again man, you’ve saved me. Lol my cousin took apart the pw50 from our youth and left it in pieces. Lol soooo I have been given the privilege of putting this basket case back together. Lol Thank you a ton again. Oh and that Honda blue paint turned out amazing!
I’m literally out here with the clutch side opened up cleaning it all out. I have the bearings in the freezer now. Lol you’re a god send brother. Have any new projects coming up? Pw80 by chance?
Eventually I would like to get the top end rebuilt. And maybe an exhaust. Just depends on if my son out grows this sooner then later. We shall see he loves it. I have a crf70f for my older son now too. So I have to keep up with all the bikes hehe.
Bigair01 if you keep doing your videos and go slightly deeper, your channel is going to blow up. People, like you and I, like knowing or finding out this kind of maintenance or restore is in reach. Especially for people with limited knowledge on various machines.
I’m in the beginning of rebuilding a 2001 PW50. Needs a top end kit, by the looks it’s got hot so doing an oil pump too. As for the deletion of it I like to think things are put there for a reason so I’m replacing it especially on a Japanese bike and these things haven’t really changed ever would probably says a thing. Except my 2001 has an extra couple of bolts/screws to pull out for the clutch cover from the left side to take the cover off. Mine needs the top end and kick start fixed but like you I’m doing a couple more repairs too just because. Love the vids.
Nice. I ended up doing the oil pump delete already. It runs better on the mixed fuel then the oil pump. I will be doing the top end on this bike for sure. Just haven’t had time as of late. And your right these things haven’t changed. Good luck on your rebuild. Hope ya have fun working on her I know I did!
Bigair01 I got my bike requiring top end build. So much scoring on the bore. Thinking heat got to it. Normal fuel in the tank and the oil reservoir was full so I think the pump has failed.
Ya I have done a bit of research on the oil pumps and apparently it is quite common the oil pump failures. I also heard they can be inconsistent. Either to much oil or not enough. So knowing I am rebuilding the top end I decided to do the block off.
Bigair01 since a top end rebuild is worth $64au I’m going to have a crack at keeping the pump in action. But it only gets one shot then I’m going premix. I noticed removing the oil pump cover it was seized full of mud so I think that’s a Yamaha fail. Will try seal it up my best to see if this helps.
Personally, I like the oil pump on these 50s. I always add a small shot of oil to the gas tank, just for good measure and can tell at a glance if the pump is oiling or not. I stepped my Grandson up to a PW80 this year and he is loving it. I have some older bikes (Bighorn 350s) that use pumps, and am tossed up about eliminating those. Seems that some of them lube directly to the main bearings.
The PW50 I had was right around 118ish psi I had a fresh top end.. 90 PSI will run alright but think about replacing in the future they are cheep :) 80cc kit ;)
Really good job on this video Bigair, Amazing how simple these bikes are. 90PSI compression is good! i think u should run it as is i doubt they have anything over 100psi brand new.
My PW50 won’t freewheel. The bike rides ok, power is there but I have push start it - if I start it and drop the rear wheel to the ground the bike just dies as soon as the rear wheel stops. I reassembled the rear wheel, shaft, replaced clutch springs etc but no luck, It’s constantly “in gear” What do you think the problem could be?
A centrifugal clutch is used on the pw50. The clutch will engage and disengage at an rpm or speed just above idle. There is no external clutch adjustment on the pw50. Possible issues could be: Warped clutch shoe assembly Partially seized or damaged clutch housing Severely worn or damaged clutch springs Faulty clutch weight shafts Or incorrect transmission oil weight I would start with oil change and then maybe if that doesn’t work pull the clutch apart and inspect for the above. Hope that is helpful. You also said it doesnt stay running so sounds like a carb issue as well. Disassemble and clean and properly adjust it. I just did a vid on properly adjusting the carb and throttle cable. Last make sure the kick starter is working properly.
Hey man I love your videos, I’m about to restore my pw for my nephew, what company did you send your top end out to get cleaned up? I forgot the name you mentioned in one of the videos. Thanks in advance big air!
I haven’t done the top end yet. I’m waiting on one part. Been three months since I ordered it. Once the part gets here I will do a vid. I bought a 60cc big bore off of eBay tho. I have that here just waiting on exhaust part so bike doesn’t sit forever before fire up
Thx John. I used WD40 Degreaser, brake cleaner, tooth brushes and a screwdrivers for most part to scrape in crevasses. turned out pretty good considering
I started with amazon for plastic and wiring. It’s basically flypig parts. But in my more recent vids I started using oem. I just installed a big bore kit in the bike today. Hopefully I can get that vid up in a few weeks.
Did the bike last awhile with that 90 psi compression? Mine has about 100 and I can't get it to stay running after my son dumping it yesterday. I've been thru everything and can't seem to figure it out. But there is a video on UA-cam of a girl with a running pw50 that they test and it only had 30psi!? How 🤔 but yet mine with 100 won't stay running lol
Check your float on carb. It could be stuck and not filling the bowl fast enough. If you check out my vid on the big bore install you will see how badly damaged my piston was. I was amazed my bike even ran. It would take a while to start after sitting for a few weeks but it ran just not a ton of power. But when I put big bore kit in it was first kick every time and really strong. But pull carb off and disassemble or maybe tap the float bowl. That could be your problem. Let me know if that worked. Cheers!
@@bigair0176 yea I did i actually have 2 carbs for it and I've been thru both of them they both will hold about 10psi of pressure so the needle seemed okay and it has good compression I used my harbor freight tester said about 100psi and ,y good matco tools one said 125 so idk which is correct but after finding that stone in the intake its ran good since then but its only been 2 days now lol so we will see. And I'd like to do the big bigbore kit and a gear reduction some day but we will see. The clutch acts like it slips with me on it until it gets moving about 5 to 10mph and then it grabs and flies and I too am 6ft 2 and 200lbs lol
My pw50 is fouling plugs I cleaned the carb out replaced the gaskets for it I mean made sure it was clean holds gas doesn’t leak out the bowl. What could it be to make it so rich running it smokes crazy bad for this bike.
Depends on your fuel to oil mixture. Is the oil pump still in the bike or removed. Foul plugs prob means to much oil in the fuel mixture which is consistent with a smoky exhaust as well. My last vid I have done on the pw50 I removed the oil pump and blocked it off. I now mix my fuel instead of relying on the oil pump. I think I’m either 40:1 or 32:1 mixture
moonreft ok awesome, good to know. Thank you cause I couldn’t find a definitive answer what was a good or bad compression other then what was on the tester itself. Cheers
Great video. I guess I can tackle nearly any problem my kid's bike has now
Glad to help. I have done a few vids on my sons pw50 now. Finished rebuilding and power mods now as well
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing.
Glad to help. Cheers!

Anyone know the name of the plastic shroud/cover that gets taken off at 5:20?
Definitely block that oil pump off and mix your own buddy. Cheap insurance
I did do that. I did a vid on it along with all the other mods I’ve done. Cheers!
I know this is an old video but do you have the inch pounds for the trans cover torque
The PW50 I had was right around 118ish psi I had a fresh top end.. 90 PSI will run alright but think about replacing in the future they are cheep :) 80cc kit ;)
Ya for sure. More content!..I have done some painting to the bike and it already looks pretty sweet. Stay tuned for the next vid!

Thanks amped79. Wait till you see the next vid. The paint job on frame and wheels look sick haha.

hey, what did you decide about getting rid of the oil pump? if you do get rid of it, what is the oil to gas mix ratio? great vid by the way
Ya if you look on my channel I got rid of the oil pump. Did a vid on it. 40:1 is my fuel/oil mix I’m running

Después de cambiar el embrague de la piwis 50 hay que sincronizar el tiempo o esta no trae tiempo gracias
nice job on the video ...... What did you use to clean the parts?
Thx John. I used WD40 Degreaser, brake cleaner, tooth brushes and a screwdrivers for most part to scrape in crevasses. turned out pretty good considering
Where did you get all your parts?
I started with amazon for plastic and wiring. It’s basically flypig parts. But in my more recent vids I started using oem. I just installed a big bore kit in the bike today. Hopefully I can get that vid up in a few weeks.
Impact Screwdriver instead of Vice Grips.... use the right tool for the right job...
Thanks for the tip. But for one I don’t own one of those and two some of the heads were stripped. But thanks!
Anybody including yourself know where to find plastic kits for the old pws like this the Amazon ones and Yamaha ones are for the new style pw?
Try partzilla. They have a pretty good stock of oem parts usually. Partzilla.com

used to test used japanese motors 80-120 was always a pass. It will be higher when running and lubed

Please keep track of money spent on this project including tools u did not already own, parts, and supplies.
Ya I will for sure. I am around 1000 now but I will add up the total in the end.
