This was a great alternative to a year's best list. I appreciated your views and additions to my must watch list. Keep up this quality and production and you'll be a top video essayist. I'm here for it. P.S. You have a great voice, figuratively and literally. Thank you for your work.
I love the connections between a lot of your choices. It gives a sense of exploration that is interesting to follow. Radio Raheem doing Robert Mitchum's Love and Hate speech from Night of the Hunter and Mithcum's connections with Noir in general. Or your contrast of Gould's Marlowe to Bogart's, and including other films by both on your list. It would have been interesting if you had included one of Mithcum's Marlowe films. Farwell, my Lovely is arguably better in my opinion but it is still interesting to comparing his version of The Big Sleep to Bogart's. In both I find he plays Marlowe similar to Eddie Coyle, as down and out and tired, but with a lot of qualities that Chandler gave the character in the books.
I like Gould in some films but i didn't like his Marlowe all that much. But the film is well worth watching, especially if one likes The Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice. Mitchum's Marlowe is really good. Farewell, My Lovely is a gorgeous film.
Hey, thanks for watching and for your comment. I've been contemplating putting together a video comparing the different takes on Marlowe. Dick Powell isn't too bad in Murder My Sweet either. Mitchum’s two films as the character are pretty great. They are able to capture the sort of perverse, seediness of Chandler’s novels that the earlier versions couldn't due to the Hays Code.
That's a good pile of films that i need to look at again. A couple of them, i think i saw parts of when they played on late-night tv when i was a kid. California Split is one that i've only seen snatches of. The Friends of Eddie Coyle is a freaking good crime film for the 70s. I can smell every scene. haha Savage is brilliant in Detour. Don't Look Know is creeptastic but Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland have a lot of bad dialogue scenes, imho.
