i am excited to see how it all worked out, even though i called it, always rewarding, thanks for your comment tom! i am happy to see you watching these haha
Really enjoyed the way you did this - showing the progression through the dyno tuning process, and inserting helpful commentary between each. This is really cool to see. Thanks!
I tune my own stuff, have for years, but I watch things like this and still get ideas on what I might be able to do differently. If it wasn't for guys posting say base tunes one place, then seeing others post about the tuning in others, I wouldn't be where I am. The little things are out there to add up to the big picture - if you look.
HE'S A CHEATER! Ethanol. The real test is how much power you can make on Wawa 91 in the PA rainforest before your pistons turn to lava... I'll be watching the Lehigh Valley for busted old NAPA truck. lol
Right on dude. Really appreciate you doing that last hell for glory pull and not going home with less than 500. It's funny how arbitrary the round numbers are, but weirdly satisfying. Excited to see what you do with the last 2% of injector duty.
goals, builds, progress, and success still feels the same, 1000whp same as 1000whp, just more money and heartache to get there, that is the point i try to show anyway. every reward is rewarding
After watching this series I want to put a 4.8 in my mustang, I wanted to put a 6.0 in it but I can get a clean 4.8 In my area for literally a quarter of the price (about $500)
There was no doubt in my mind what it would do. I was convinced back at fairmont 3. Certified bamf right there. Now a 3 city block burnout would be the cherry on top!
thanks for the tuning info. that's what I was referring too on the last vid. helps me understand your thought process when dealing with tuning. Now we need tune vids so I can feel comfortable dropping $$$ on HP without fear of blowing up.
Great stuff!! Just thought I would post my first turbo LS project. 1970 Nova bone stock 6.0 2003 LQ4 (except injectors). Went 11.04 at 121 first time out on 7 psi, no intercooler, pump 94 and drag radials. Did spray windshield washer fluid as a precaution. Pulled 441 wheel hp on dyno. Plan is to bump boost to 10-12 psi and see if it will run a low 10. I think it will get into 10's with slicks on the 7 lb wastegate spring. 120 thousand mile junkyard motor never opened.
You can't BS a BS'er! This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. In a LS world of useless information this is pure knowledge. I always thought I needed to throw tons of money at mine for forged this and that and Mamo heads, fuck that. Amazing results, you're the fuckin shit!
yep that is the point, it might not even be a great turbo cam, but it does good enough in testing, 230 dollars shipped and sounds great, wich is what 90% of people want anyway
Man this gets me hopeful about my car, dynoing it Saturday, using your goldbox tune, don't know if it's ideal for my setup but it drives good and pulls hard! Haven't touched a thing
Sloppy Mechanics Matt has a very particular set of turbo ls skills, turbo ls skills he has acquired over a very long career. turbo ls Skills that make him a nightmare for people like you. Mr. Happle we are blessed to have you as our teacher in this field. Congratulations on the baby too.
Watching from the UK so going to be late for work but had to see the numbers. Awesome work Matt, the whistle,is coming through loud and clear! I think I watch all of your videos, did you ever pass comment on the blow off valve?
Watched the series and can't help but come away with the notion that no other manufacturer allows for as much flexibility adapting engine/transmission combinations and OEM computer manipulation for applications obviously never originally intended. Try 500 horse out of a Ford 305 or magnum 318 without breaking everything including the bank! Great series, thanks.
Yea Buddy that is what I wanted to see! gotta go get me a 4.8 and a turbo now. You make it so hard to keep up with you and the things you do. LOL Hey I was thinking about how cheap it is for you out there over on the west coast here any LS motor at a wreaking yard is right around $1400 and trying to find one at Pick-n-pull is kinda just a case of luck. You have got it so good over there.
could you do us a big one man? could you do a 91 octane pump tune? i know there would be some loss but us canadians do not get corn juice up here. i think there is like 4 pumps in all of canada.
After re-reading my own question I realize how mildly retarded it is and how obvious the answer is. Sorry Matt :) I guess I was wondering more about how far it was off and how much you had to adjust it. Thanks for everything!
I just ordered the same setup for my 92's10 4.8 swap project after i watched your " What turbo LS stuff should I get 2017 edition " video. Are you going to dyno with pumpgas only? because im at Turkey and you cant get ethanol based fuel from gas stations in Turkey.
Im going to run a similar setup (5.3, sloppy stage 2 cam, decappeds, through an auto) and run about 15 pounds, hoping for closer to 600 wheel on pumpgas. Is that too much for de-capped injectors without e85? Should i just go ahead and get the 80#s?
+No ID when I say duty cycle I am talking about how much of the injector I am using, hard to say If it would be good around a road course depends on your car gearing and more, I would assume a wider powerband might work better for a road.course car
you mentioned you start adding timing at peak torque @ around 8:49. You generally do the opposite to prevent excessive cylinder pressure, although I think you were tired and messed up. Good stuff, should be around low 600s on another dyno.. lol.
Cool Im trying to get an Idea of how this turbo will act on a 6.0 in a 2500 Suburban it seems that it may be a little small on the hot side but ef it Im gonna try it.
I installed the sloppy stage 2 cam in a 99 ls1 camaro and I have spent the last week playing with parameters to get it to idle correctly. How much timing do you run at idle? I recorded my MAF at 800 rpm to be about 9 g/s of airflow, do I use that number or do i need to modify it before i put it into the table? I set the cranking timing to 9 degrees, but right after it starts up it will either die or swing way down to like 200 rpm and then idle all over the place for 10 seconds and then idle fine after that. The pcm I have seems to be missing a lot of features that are shown in youtube videos.
Oh, no fucking wonder. lol I was on simple view and everything I found online wasn't matching what I was seeing and I'm like uhh.... lol I also realized I needed to re-log airflow with my AC on since its hot af here and I use AC 11 months out of the year. Thanks for the help!
its a stock non adjustable rail and regulator, of course you can change all that stuff but that is not the point of this project, i am going to swap to gasoline and see how it does next
Hey Mat, @1:18-1:20 it looks like there is something arching at the top center of your firewall where it looks like you have ablue wire attatched to the firewall? It does it on all other pulls on acceleration, didnt see it under decel.
Yeah it's got me curious because usually you make less power without ethanol but it will allow him to put in more fuel without it too, so Idk what will happen. I guess with gas there will have to be less timing to make up for the extra cooling and detonation prevention that alcohol gives?
Akizzem mine had 282k and the tops were as tight as .017 and as loose as .019 I opened all of mine to .023/.024 in that range. Second rings were all good but a few. I opened them to the same .023/.024
I don't know about the aero motive 340 but the walbro 450 overpowers the vette regulator filter big time. I recently had to get rid of the vette unit as it couldn't hold the pressure under 72psi with the larger pump.
Outfuckingstanding sir! you never fail to impress. Boosting my 6.0 soon and following most of your guidlines. Only issue is im on a P59 pcm and Im not liking how it cuts my ve resolution by 50% when I switch to a 2 bar OS. Any way around that that you know of? It would be nice to me able to keep the 5kpa resolution. It gets even worse if you try to convert to 3 bar!
Thanks for the reply. The 2 bar resolution isn't so bad but if you goto 3bar on the p59 I think you only have about 7 rows left to tune out of boost by the time it compresses to make room. Just seems like that leaves a lot of room for error. I'm only planning to run a 2 bar map sensor but it would be nice if it would "add" the extra boost tables like it does in the earlier pcms instead of compressing to make everything fit in the original rows. Kinda fucks you on the copy/paste after converting too since you can only use every other row from the original tune.
Sloppy Mechanics will you have to pull back the timing to prevent detonation? Thus lose a little power? Unfortunately I can't get the E85 around me that's why I'm curious.
You're like Bob Ross. You make it look so easy. "We're gonna put a little splash of timing here, and add a PSI" boom 500+ tire.
+
"and lets add a happy little PSI here'
already been done
What a beast! This series has been excellent, thank you for all of the straightforward, honest detail.
i am excited to see how it all worked out, even though i called it, always rewarding, thanks for your comment tom! i am happy to see you watching these haha
go straight to 30psi anything less means you still sit down to pee
hahhahaha
Sloppy Mechanics What are your thoughts on AEM Infinity ECU with this setup?
blalien777 he doesn't care for them
I thought it was turn it up until you smell coolant and then back off a 1/4 turn.
It's so nice when you know what the fuck you're talking about and can prove it. I love it. And congrats on the baby mine is due in a week.
+El Diablo gaming thanks and congrats to you also!
You are a stud. You say you are going to do something and you do it. This is what real class looks like folks.
+marshallnoise lol thanks
Matt is the man. Tuning is key. Always learning new things from watching your channel. Thanks for all the hard work. And making it look easy.
because it is easy!
Nice video , helpful to see how you approach tuning when starting to build a map . And also nice to see the hp increase , as you made all the tweaks .
Really enjoyed the way you did this - showing the progression through the dyno tuning process, and inserting helpful commentary between each. This is really cool to see. Thanks!
+crab453 it might not be right but it's given me results for a while haha
I tune my own stuff, have for years, but I watch things like this and still get ideas on what I might be able to do differently. If it wasn't for guys posting say base tunes one place, then seeing others post about the tuning in others, I wouldn't be where I am. Mate, that's awesome. Congrats on proving the theory. Must be a blast to drive.
Great stuff Matt. I can't wait to see how much this thing makes on straight gas.
+Shawn Cun it'll happen!
Well done! I don't feel like I've been BS'd.
+Stuart W mission accomplished
HE'S A CHEATER! Ethanol. The real test is how much power you can make on Wawa 91 in the PA rainforest before your pistons turn to lava... I'll be watching the Lehigh Valley for busted old NAPA truck. lol
I love how every time you made a pull with you tube subtitles on, it says music at higher RPMs and Applause at idol.
lolol
Mine says, "Music". Lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it does.
congrats boss. that seems like it would be a lot more fun to fuck around with on the road than the 1000 hp monster. sounds strong too.
Wooo man that smaller turbo spools up quick and HARD. Thing still sounds like an absolute jet. Love it! Good stuff and can't wait for more
for sure
The spool up on that is insane.
Awesome Matt! Crazy, getting power out of a mostly stock junkyard truck 4.8 that even supercars were barely making 20 years ago.
This is what we've been waiting for!
After watching this series I want to put a 4.8 in my mustang, I wanted to put a 6.0 in it but I can get a clean 4.8 In my area for literally a quarter of the price (about $500)
Do it up. A chevy powered ford should rustle some jimmys
So happy for you man.... you said you were going to do it and there it is!
There was no doubt in my mind what it would do. I was convinced back at fairmont 3. Certified bamf right there. Now a 3 city block burnout would be the cherry on top!
its coming
thanks for the tuning info. that's what I was referring too on the last vid. helps me understand your thought process when dealing with tuning. Now we need tune vids so I can feel comfortable dropping $$$ on HP without fear of blowing up.
i have how to use hpt videos on Vimeo, links on sloppymechanics.com links page

damn, was about to go to bed, but I guess it can wait ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
sloppy mechanics be like, f yo bedtime
Sloppy Mechanics You ain't just Whistling Dixie...
You can't BS a BS'er! This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. In a LS world of useless information this is pure knowledge. I always thought I needed to throw tons of money at mine for forged this and that and Mamo heads, fuck that. Amazing results, you're the fuckin shit!
Fuck yea matt keeping all those high dollar parts on the shelf showing us theres no need for them 4.great FTW
Congrats on blowing through the 500 mark! Also that thing sounds pissed off at idle, I like the cam choice.
yep that is the point, it might not even be a great turbo cam, but it does good enough in testing, 230 dollars shipped and sounds great, wich is what 90% of people want anyway
230 shipped wtf?? Where ? I've been scouring the web for one... doesn't help that our dollar sucks ass up here either.
Man this gets me hopeful about my car, dynoing it Saturday, using your goldbox tune, don't know if it's ideal for my setup but it drives good and pulls hard! Haven't touched a thing
Maybe it's time starting thinking, turbo baby stroller?
+Eric Sageser yes haha
Just sick man! That's so awesome
you have 'A Very Particular Set of Skills'
+interceptor0166 lol indeed
Sloppy Mechanics
Matt has a very particular set of turbo ls skills, turbo ls skills he has acquired over a very long career. turbo ls Skills that make him a nightmare for people like you.
Amazing. Well done Matt.
+MrToolean thanks!
Great job! I love the 4.8.
So cool...now more 1/4 miles pulls whoop whoop
I need a small disposable income and I need it now! I want to do this in my dad's old Ram 50. It's just sitting, waiting for new life.
drugs
Them damn 4.great's.
Awesome work man.
This is so awesome!
Lol, sounds like a turbine Colorado, its awesome. I had no doubt you'd hit it, ain't yo' first rodeo, as always thanks for sharing!
Beautiful work! You have a gift, man! 4.8 in a Ford Pinto?!
Im-fucking-pressive Matt! I love it
i called it babe ruth style
Sloppy Mechanics out of the park!!!
Yuussss
Impressive! Keep up the good work!
You have got it so good over there.
the climate destroys the trucks so people throw them out, so the motors are a plenty
the only thing about living in western NY i enjoy. Beat pieces of shit for dirt cheap everywhere with a perfect drivetrain
I would still like to see a carb turbo for us stone age guys.
i have zero interest in doing carb stuff, sorry
This is good shit. Love the channel.
not to shabby ! Sounds like 500 !
she puts the nose up and keeps it up!
Great im looking forward to see what it does on gas .
Where i live the closest place to me for e85 is 30 miles .
it should be capable of making the same power on gas, i will show and try also when i water it down
Just awesome..
I wish I still had my 66Chevelle now
Would love to see dyno results with a full exhaust vs open downpipe.
could you do us a big one man? could you do a 91 octane pump tune? i know there would be some loss but us canadians do not get corn juice up here. i think there is like 4 pumps in all of canada.
yes
Would appreciate that, from canada as well, 4.8 turbo build in my near future.
I got a 2001 6.0 with almost 400k just begging for a turbo lol
don't check any bearings it will last for another 100k @ 650rwhp
Same here in Alaska! No Corn.. have to import race fuel or corn here. BS! Everyone here blends race fuel, runs Torco, or meth injects.
Did you adjust timing and fuel both between 3 & 4 to smooth that mid out like that?
yes
After re-reading my own question I realize how mildly retarded it is and how obvious the answer is. Sorry Matt :) I guess I was wondering more about how far it was off and how much you had to adjust it. Thanks for everything!
Gonna make me try a 5.3 swap jeeez
that sloppy cam idle never gets old
Nice work sir.
i try
Sloppy Mechanics
You succeed!!
and to think, i almost went to bed. solid numbers! i really need to work on my car to get it running... well my Nova, and not my G8 lol...
RIP sleep, sloppy uploaded at 1am again
I just ordered the same setup for my 92's10 4.8 swap project after i watched your " What turbo LS stuff should I get 2017 edition " video. Are you going to dyno with pumpgas only? because im at Turkey and you cant get ethanol based fuel from gas stations in Turkey.
Murat Nalci you bet your ass he's going to do it on pump gas or this isn't Sloppy Mechanics anymore. Plus he says it at 6:05
Awesome results! Any plans on doing a pump gas tune for this combo? More than likely copying the engine combo but no access to E85.
yes
Low timing and high boost vs high timing and low boost pretty much self explanatory
you might be surprised with what people fail to conceptualize
This makes me want to put my 4.8 into my f100 instead of the 6.0
+Eli garcia just proving you don't need to spend double for some 6.0 tac
Sloppy Mechanics I have both lol the 4.8 came out of my sierra it has a collapsed a lifter and i got the lq4 for 700 with 109k
Impressive.
awesome! congrats on getting 500. explain the duty cycle plse. also, how would this engine setup do a round a roadcourse...way too laggy or what?
+No ID when I say duty cycle I am talking about how much of the injector I am using, hard to say If it would be good around a road course depends on your car gearing and more, I would assume a wider powerband might work better for a road.course car
and to think , 1076 was just around the corner
That was awesome.👍
you mentioned you start adding timing at peak torque @ around 8:49. You generally do the opposite to prevent excessive cylinder pressure, although I think you were tired and messed up. Good stuff, should be around low 600s on another dyno.. lol.
adding after. adding after
Do you ever get the cops called while you're dynoing? Cops around here really enforce the noise ordinance after dark
not even once in 13 years
What AR on the hot side housing and do you know if that 78/75 has options for different hot side housings?
Dale Thomas good question
not even sure, would have to ask VSracing
Cool Im trying to get an Idea of how this turbo will act on a 6.0 in a 2500 Suburban it seems that it may be a little small on the hot side but ef it Im gonna try it.
Do you like to keep it unlocked to just stay safe at WOT?
i keep it unlocked because it would hurt this converter
So what's next, 1000 horse 4.great?
eh, i dont think so for now, im really happy with the "low" hp budget build stuff
man its like mcdonalds im lovin it mat thats a bad mama jamer right thare
badass!!!!
The pcm I have seems to be missing a lot of features that are shown in youtube videos.
are you using advanced view or simple view in hptuners, lots to learn, stock ecu wizardry isnt for everyone
Oh, no fucking wonder. lol I was on simple view and everything I found online wasn't matching what I was seeing and I'm like uhh.... lol I also realized I needed to re-log airflow with my AC on since its hot af here and I use AC 11 months out of the year. Thanks for the help!
If you are running out of injector and not pump, can you just bump your rail pressure up a few PSI?
its a stock non adjustable rail and regulator, of course you can change all that stuff but that is not the point of this project, i am going to swap to gasoline and see how it does next
Build cool shit
Meet your goal
Drive it home
What's the fuel pump duty? Is it gonna be good for the bigger injectors on the popcorn juice?
there is no fuel pump duty, its just running, injector is at 98% estimated on 78% ethanol
Hey Mat, @1:18-1:20 it looks like there is something arching at the top center of your firewall where it looks like you have ablue wire attatched to the firewall? It does it on all other pulls on acceleration, didnt see it under decel.
its a label on the wiring harness, but thank you!
So with pump gas the injector duty cycle should be lower at the same power level? yes or no
+Richard Harris correct
Yeah it's got me curious because usually you make less power without ethanol but it will allow him to put in more fuel without it too, so Idk what will happen.
I guess with gas there will have to be less timing to make up for the extra cooling and detonation prevention that alcohol gives?
Good job!
Makes me think my goal of 600whp on my lq4/7875 might be tougher than I thought
+Akizzem the turbo will do it just watch your ring lands
Sloppy Mechanics stock ring gap for the win... hopefully the 250k the motor had opened them up a little
Akizzem mine had 282k and the tops were as tight as .017 and as loose as .019 I opened all of mine to .023/.024 in that range. Second rings were all good but a few. I opened them to the same .023/.024
Good shit Matt!
I have 4.8 fuel system is Aeromotive 340 pump with corvette fuel filter / regulator fuel rail is return less .Will this work for me
i am not a fan of the returnless vette regulator at all
Sloppy Mechanics the problem that i have I have 3 set's of return less rail so I will use it .Because I am over budget the parts i already have
I don't know about the aero motive 340 but the walbro 450 overpowers the vette regulator filter big time. I recently had to get rid of the vette unit as it couldn't hold the pressure under 72psi with the larger pump.
Hey mat, do you think using 91 octane would be safe at this power level on this engine?
+Francois Remillard yes
Like a BOSS Matt! :)
Who's pretty ass damn silverado is that on the lift in the back? Bossmans truck?
I put a edelbogg 750 on my 4.8. 14% duty cycle at any rpm.
+Damon Baldwin lol
Hell yea
Windows XP.! Dyno must be hacked by Russians by now...
nice work
So have you got a fuel pressure gauge on there ? Hows that single walbro doin ?
didnt check yet, seems like fuel is ok, will continue to provide results good or bad
Nice. What do you think some 243 heads would do for that combo ?
Outfuckingstanding sir! you never fail to impress. Boosting my 6.0 soon and following most of your guidlines. Only issue is im on a P59 pcm and Im not liking how it cuts my ve resolution by 50% when I switch to a 2 bar OS. Any way around that that you know of? It would be nice to me able to keep the 5kpa resolution. It gets even worse if you try to convert to 3 bar!
+Bad Luck Garage you don't need all that resolution you'll be fine
Thanks for the reply. The 2 bar resolution isn't so bad but if you goto 3bar on the p59 I think you only have about 7 rows left to tune out of boost by the time it compresses to make room. Just seems like that leaves a lot of room for error. I'm only planning to run a 2 bar map sensor but it would be nice if it would "add" the extra boost tables like it does in the earlier pcms instead of compressing to make everything fit in the original rows. Kinda fucks you on the copy/paste after converting too since you can only use every other row from the original tune.
Good job! and NAnanana to all the nay sayers
How does one learn how to tune like this?
i learned through trial and erorr
Obviously the 4.8 is junk right? :)
Nice!
Would a GMC 8.1 Vortec fit in that?
probably
Wow
sloppy mechanics, What do you like more this 4.8 or a 5.3?
not entirely sure what you are asking.
Do you think you can get more out of a budget 5.3l or this budget 4.8 you just built. or do you find that they are pretty much the same?
I want to see what it will do on 93
+407ForRent same amount on less injector I think everyone is missing that point
Sloppy Mechanics will you have to pull back the timing to prevent detonation? Thus lose a little power?
Unfortunately I can't get the E85 around me that's why I'm curious.
I would guess that he could probably run 15 degrees up around 6k that's really pretty conservative ignition timing
So like 580-600ish crank hp?
its approx 20-30% loss easily so mid 600s i would est flywheel
I would think more, it is an auto
