In this home, Dr. Energy Saver replaced the old oil furnace with an energy-efficient propane heat pump. The heat pump is so efficient at extracting all the heat out of the combustion gases and distributing heated air throughout the house, that the exhaust vents can be run through PVC pipes to the outside of the house, rather than through the masonry chimney. This upgrade has made the masonry chimney no longer necessary. Larry Janesky, owner and founder of Dr. Energy Saver, also walks us through the process of sealing this unused chimney.
The old, low-efficiency gas water heater, which was also exhausted through the masonry chimney, was replaced by an energy-efficient tankless water heater. The tankless water heater also exhausts trough PVC pipes to the outside.
These upgrades rendered the home's existing chimney useless. Masonry chimneys, even when in use, are huge sources of energy waste. They are basically an unsealed, hollow column that runs from the bottom of your home all the way to the roof. Heat is being transferred to the brick walls, and the air you pay to heat is leaking through gaps in the column, and between the roof and the masonry walls.
The upper part of the masonry chimney was taken down to the attic floor. In the future, the homeowner will be able to take down the part that runs through the living space, if he wishes to have additional living space. The top of the chimney, now down to just below the attic floor, was then closed using rigid foam board insulation, and air sealed with spray foam. The gap left on the roof was sealed and shingled.
The new heating system will now work at top efficiency, because the heated air will stay where it belongs-- in the living areas of the house. The home will be more comfortable and this homeowner will save a lot of money in his energy bills.

This clip didn't show just how removing the chimney and patching the roof is done. More of a sales pitch

@@user-hd3dp8yj2n This is a response to an old post. I already did it on my own. Certainly not necessary to hire a contractor if you do things around the house and it looks beautiful and functional

I share some similar concerns that this homeowner had for removing the chimney. Were the ridge cap shingles installed correctly on this home? They looked too short that would allow rain to get inside the attic.

my old chimney mortar is like sand I'm slowly repointing it over time because it's so scary I scrape out 2-3 spots fillem then next week a few more- What is the skim coat you see on all the old fire places? It's just smeared all over it like plaster

I enjoyed watching how you removed the chimney. However, when I saw you blowing cellulose, I shook my head. I've blown cellulose in multiple houses over the years. However, since fiberglass is now available, there are so many advantages in using it vs cellulose. A fraction of the dust, it doesn't pack down and lose its insulation value. And it should last far longer. Your thoughts on this?

I need help. The chimney at my house was removed above the roof because we thought it was the cause of a leak. Fast forward two years and we have a brand new roof but the same leak from up around where the remaining inside portion of the chimney meets the ceiling. This is driving me nuts, how do we fix this before my new roof rots off too?

The attic is vented with outside air. Your air leak never came from the chimney seal at the roof. The problem is the seal in your ceiling framing around the chimney

Pass I'll keep my high efficiency cheap coal heater. Coal keeps Americans working too. Those workers are my neighbors and they need to eat so I can eat. BTW the heat loss from the old chimney and there is always some heat loss now just comes out that side pipe on the house. It's never completely eliminated 🤣🤣🤣
