    I have known several priests who took their own lives. As a priest who has served for thirty-five years, I can tell you that the ministry has changed enormously. The distance between priest and people has widened due to suspicion of priests as a result of the sexual abuse scandals. I am the pastor of eight parishes and cover a huge area where Catholics are not plentiful. I could never have imagined the stress of serving in the present era. The level of criticism of the Church authorities and of Church teaching is overwhelming. I start each day asking God to get me through the day in a way that does not harm and hopefully brings healing and peace through God’s grace to those I encounter. Please folks, support your priest as best you can, challenge him if you must, but support him.

      What a tragic loss to everyone. Father Dennis spent an academic year with us at St Mary's in Marshalltown before he began studies in Rome. Among his many gifts, he was a talented musician. I remember him playing the organ in the choir loft without sheet music. Prayers for Fathet Dennis and all who mourn his loss.

      All ministers and priests of any faith makes sacrifices for their people, simply by choosing this career, or being called to this career. However, I do believe the Catholic Church places an extreme burden on many priests by insisting on vows of celibacy. Although the priest can always take his problems to his heavenly father, I believe these men also deserve an earthly soulmate with whom to share both their good and bad times.

    • @resetsetmefree478
      @resetsetmefree478 2 дні тому

      @LovesLakes and of course here we go yet AGAIN with the whole "we need to do away with celibacy" argument 🙄funny how people never even mention that marriage is no guarantee of happiness and that spousal abuse is also very real. And the double standard with you is what really makes me sick. So are you also going to require Buddhist monks and nuns to marry? They are celibate too at least according to everything I've read just sayin here....

    Father Dennis was a great man, a great friend, and a great priest. Thank you all for praying for our pastor- we have some hard days ahead.
    Father Dennis was fluent in 6 languages (Spanish, Italian, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew) and was an expert in biblical translation. He was very well read in analytic philosophy, especially Wittgenstein and Bertrand Russell (I borrowed several of his books). He heard confession for 10 hours a week and said Mass in both the ordinary and extraordinary form.
    Once about 7 years ago, I drove by a horrible car accident where a car was burned up. I learned later that a man was burned alive inside the car. I learned last year that Father Dennis had stopped by the same accident- he went and consoled the burned man as he laid dying on the ground, and gave him his last rights and prayed over him with all of the first responders.
    Father was a great priest. Please pray for him as often as you think to do so. I will pray for him every day for the rest of my life.

    With the shortage of clergy our priests are under immense stress and workload.
    We as laity have a responsibility to check in with our priests and make sure they are ok - whether by offering to do whatever jobs we can for them to relieve some of that pressure running their parish, cooking them a meal/taking them out for a meal etc
    Our priests MUST know and deserve to know we support them and want to do what we can to support them

      Fr. Dennis's death hit me hard as a fellow priest. In the seminary I was told by one of our priest professors, have someone who can call you by your first name, meaning a good friend whom you can lean on and see you, yes as a priest, but also as a fellow brother who sometimes just needs someone to talk to, to laugh, cry, and just spend a wholesome and healthy time with a friend.

      @ I owe my attitude towards our priests to my dad - supporting you priest was a huge part of Irish culture when he grew up even if you had little to no money yourself.
      The widows mite was a story dad constantly told us kids growing up.
      My priest actually gives me into trouble now for volunteering for thing 😂 as he says I’m doing more than enough for the parish and other parishioners need to start helping.
      But the way I see is that God has graced me with a significant improvement in my daily pain from my rheumatoid arthritis after my priest did deliverance over me and did anointing of the sick on me (I went from being bed bound/unable to to hardly anything to being able to do significantly more even though I’ve not had a ‘miraculous cure’ as my joints are still badly damaged).
      He has also been an amazing source of spiritual knowledge and support for me where my spiritual life keeps feeling like a freight train - even now when I’m going through spiritual dryness because he is a great source of comforting words to keep you on the narrow path.
      (Even though he likely rolls his eyes internally when I ask him another question by prefacing it ‘this probably is a stupid question’ 😂 - but he welcomes all my questions as he sees them as a desire to get closer to God)
      So to me the least I can do is volunteer for things considering I’m still not physically able to return to work (may never be be to due to the damage in many joints) but I can do what I am able for God and that includes supporting one of his anointed ministers and doing what I can to raise some much needed parish funds.
      I do hope you have that friend who can call you by your first name and who can support you in all moments of life whether joyful or sorrowful

      Sorry but labeling Fr Conway in absentia as being mentally ill is grossly uncalled for. Hippa laws people!! Stress can and does kill. Lack of sleep because of stress can kill. Lack of support when you desperately need a break, miss family and friends? Can overload the system until you are too overwhelmed to see straight. You think Satan doesn’t exist? You think he won’t hunt priests and nuns and worm his way into your heart and mind…you’re no good! Who cares? Do away with yourself, no one will miss you. All slimey, evil pointed ‘suggestions’ to break you down in a moment of weakness. He doesn’t come alone. Demons work in gangs. I am being actively targeted by satanists. Happy to let me know I’m on their kill list. Why? Christians
      ARE under attack. Christian parishes ARE being put under the control of wizards, witches and their witchcraft, voodoo. Do not laugh or blow off the truth. I bet he was under such daily attack from a distance and up close. Divide and conquer. Destroy from within and without. I went for help to my church. Oh, female? Gotta be nutso, go see a shrink and stay away from us. I asked for our exorcist..called..oh gawsh a female! Gotta be a head case, go see a shrink then come back to me, BUT I had already done that, said so, got the all clear and now desperately need spiritual help?! Blew me off then called my parish back and I got kicked out. So no surprise to see chaos within and without. Revelation told you this was coming, I read it, believed it, know it to be fact. You guys are educated in all this. But have this superiority about yourselves. So now what? Satan is in the Vatican and is cleaning house. But you bet I got my letter in the mail telling me I owe you a donation for Xmas. Really huh? I am below poverty level. I do not have a thing to give. I wish. Fr Conway was holy, otherwise Satan wouldn’t have hunted and tortured him. You all better wake up real fast. We ARE in the end times. It is going to get a lot worse. You closed the churches not us. You refused masses and confession not us. We never lost the faith. Why should we feel sorry for you? You abandoned us and don’t get why we are no shows. Imagine that? The Euphrates dried up, it’s in revelation. Demons ARE loosed on us. Get those bottles of holy water, blessed oils, consecrated hosts lined up. Your parishioners are going to need them real soon. Don’t think of denying them again. We are educated, not dumb, we have bibles, we can read. We are getting visions and auditory warnings. Not fake, not mental illness. All in revelations, I’m a believer. Where are you guys? We need you now more than ever. 😢

Praying this prayer we are told that 1,000 souls are released. If we love, we should long to help our brothers & sister attain the goal we all wait for and that’s seeing & living with Jesus. Fr. Conway served Jesus very well. He must have been in such a horrible state and the emotional pain so great that he couldn’t rationally see an end to his pain. We should never judge anyone for unless we have lived in their shoes, we don’t know what they are going through. I just know that Jesus is love and Fr. Conway’s life was dedicated to that same love. You can look this up; there are stories of people who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge and survived. All of them said the moment they jumped, they realized that they had made a huge mistake and that all of their problems could be fixed. I think it's good reading for anyone who is thinking about taking their own life. I am shocked that a priest did this, and I pray that his soul will be saved.

When you're there and you only find relief in the thought of ending it all it feels like complete fantasy that things can get better. It was impossible to believe but if I could go back in time I'd just tell myself to hang on every day because things were going to end up being so damn good. May God bless you all and provide the light to see the Truth.

    Thank you for covering this. Please remember that priests are human beings, too. They experience trauma and are often surrounded by suspicion, hostility, misunderstanding, and contempt. They are sometimes completely abandoned, humanly speaking. All of this takes a toll. Be kind. Be supportive. And remember Jesus’ words, that also apply to priests: Love one another, as I have loved you. Rest in peace, Fr Dennis.

    • @DanielleProvenzale
      @DanielleProvenzale 5 днів тому +5

      🤔not sure what you’re trying to say? That he didn’t commit suicide, but died by suicide🤔 That it could have been prevented if someone hadn’t helped him? 🤔 My father put a gun to his head and left us a note, so we new his intention and what followed. I had a niece who died of a drug overdose, was it intentional? Unintentional ? We will never know, but the pain is still the same. The language doesn’t really mean much. Whether they committed suicide, died by suicide, died as a result of a rash action. Sometimes we can help them; sometimes only God can help them🙌🏻🕊️❤️🙏🏻

    • @SisyphusOfAlice
      @SisyphusOfAlice 5 днів тому +3

      Absolutely. Language matters. When we de-criminalize and de-shame the language by not saying “committed”, we decrease the stigma around mental illness which may make it more likely someone will seek out the help they need.

    • @DanielleProvenzale
      @DanielleProvenzale 5 днів тому

      @SisyphusOfAlice, There is no criminality in suicide - no one is going to prosecute you for committing suicide🙄 as for the stigma of mental illness; my father had been diagnosed as manic depressive, he had been admitted many years earlier for a manic episode and at the time of his suicide had been under psychiatric care and receiving supposed antidepressant medication which I believed caused his rash action ,which lead to his suicide. My niece had also been hospitalized and under psychiatric care for several years and ultimately died of her intentional or unintentional drug overdose. So I’m not a real believer in the thought that mentally ill folks are unlikely to seek help because they feel a stigma attached. In fact, in today’s world, one could say we are all on the spectrum of some cognitive or mental illness in some form😵‍💫no one is perfectly « normal »just a matter of degree😉

    I don’t think we grasp how lonely it is to be a priest. In most cases today they live by themselves. No family to eat dinner with. No spouse to care for them when they are sick. No one to share joys or sadness…. Many clergy hit the bottle. Many struggle with depression.

      My time in novitiate I saw a full range of characters. My best friend had many issues, but he stayed. Sadly, some years after I left and long after formation and serving in New Orleans he took his life. The demons never left but got worse. I still miss Jim.
      The biggest problem I saw was the bottle. Our Novice Master was brilliant and an incredible preacher. However, when he preached at Mass his hands and body trembled. He was a recovered alcoholic and formed AA groups made up of lay and clergy. On occasion he would take in a wayward priest from another religious community or diocese. I remember one priest who came to stay with us.Handsome, articulate, funny and smart. After awhile I saw less and less of him, then one day I saw him unshaven and unkept. He was sneaking into the chapel to drink the wine. Yuck! The Novice Master gave him one chance to get sober and he failed. He was told to leave. Sometime later I heard he died. The cause was kept from us.
      The bottle is an attempt to mask the demons. In most cases, when I talked with them they were struggling with loneliness, depression etc and their choice of religious life was a failed attempt to find a family-like community - but too many had the same problems.

    The first, or at least primary, thing to assure everyone is that he is not going to go to Hell. How this psychopathic and insensitive dogma got started I will never really know. But having been suicidal myself, I know just how intense pain can be, so horrible that it overrides one's innate sense of self-preservation. Now if I, being imperfect, can feel tremendous compassion and understanding for those who take their lives, then how much more so God? I believe God has taken that anguished man into his arms offering healing, hope, and love everlasting. Especially in these days, the world, both public and private, seems to be spiraling down into some unmentionable pit with no resolution in sight. God bless and keep and give love to Father Dennis.
