- The past two years, I've wanted to learn to play the piano but because of our traveling, I have not been able to. Now that I'm back in South Africa, I'm going to learn to play the piano and document how it goes.
In this video I bought a new piano! Thanks to Derek from W.Heuer for helping me choose which one to get. The piano I chose was the Yamaha Arius YDP 164. I'll make a video about the piano soon so subscribe if you are interested.
Music I played - Fur Elise by Beethoven

Thank you all for watching! This is my first video to nativly get 10k views! Thank you! 🙏🏽
I laughed very hard at the beginning of the video because I have similar small digital keyboard with too few and already squeaky keys.
haha it was really bad!
Me too 😂 can't wait to get my digital piano after Christmas
Has nothing to do with the topic of your video but your room is so pretty
Lucienne Summer thanks ! 🙏🏼
At first when I opened the video, I thought it was a simply piano ad and tried to find the skip ad button.
haha - oh dear. :D Thanks for not skipping it :D
man I love how much you like the piano and the sheet music book! can see the passion in your smile
Thank you! I really was super excited about the piano and the book included was a great surprise!
I am so excited I found your channel. I just started learning to play piano a year ago when I was 33, with almost no musical experience. I have an old acoustic piano and I found your channel while looking for videos about Yamaha's digital ones. I've thought about shifting over to digital just to get a headphone port since the best practice time I get is when the kids are asleep. Yours is the only channel I've found showing someone who hasn't been playing since he was 8 on one of these.
You should post an update!
Hey Scott! Thanks for the comment! I do need to make an update video sometime! Enjoy the piano playing man :)
@@DylanHaskin So, obviously a lot has happened in the last 9 months. My job turned into a Work From Home job, and I sold my motorcycle, which I really wasn't riding much anymore after my second daughter was born, and bought an Arius YDP-184. The ability to turn the volume down or plug in headphones removed all my inhibitions, and my practicing has gone WAY UP. It's really great being able to look at sheet music (to a point) and saying "I can do this, if I put in the time."
I hope your piano playing is going well too.
At the first part of the video I heard the key noises while it was being pressed
I'm sorry that I'm 2 years late but I'm happy for u!! And this totally make me inspired to learn piano again...
Such a calming voice ! the piano is fab 🤩 ordered one for Xmas 🎅🏼😀can’t wait !
Thank you! Congratulations!,
I've got ydp 164 too. Loving it!
Ah that's awesome congrats!
@Macuahuitl That's awesome! Congrats!
i wish i can afford one, have fun !
Nice video! I laughed at the beginning because my digital piano has squeaky keys too LOL. Well, it's still very decent and you can't really hear the squeaky keys but if you record too close to the keys you can hear the squeaky keys in the background. i'm changing my piano to a white yamaha arius!
wow! congrats on getting a new piano! hope you like it
That is the piano I am thinking of getting. I currently have the Casio 61 key keyboard with the clicking keys!
This piano has an awesome feature on board called a USB audio interface. It allows the user to playback VST samples through the pianos own built in speakers. It also eliminates the need for a separate audio interface. Speaking of, my question to you is if you do use any VST tech... and if so what laptop and VST software do you recommend
i've got this piano modell at christmas day as a present. it is very fun to play and i love the sound of it!
I owned the yamaha ydp 103 digital piano
Last month I bought a YDP-144. A bit cheaper than your 164. I'm very happy with it! Good luck with your piano!
That's awesome congratulations! The YDP 144 is really good! Enjoy it !
I could sense the satisfaction in finally playing that high note hehe!
You deserve so many more subscribers, incredibly underrated.
Thanks! It will grow in time :)
Hey bro
Good luck, I really hope
You make me to remember when I started, I suffered with the same note in the same song on a piano of an older version of Arius
New subscriber from Mexico :)
Take care
Ey muchas gracias mi amigo. Que tenga un buen día! (Sorry my Spanish is pretty bad but I know some basics :) )
@@DylanHaskinit was excellent haha
Good job with your video. Congrats for the 10k views! Awesome
Espero ver tu progreso...
Suerte mi amigo :)
this video is so relaxing! love it
Liked your video a lot. I am just like you learning. I learn fur Elise as a part of my 7th grade RCM exam!
0:25 I press to plastic so many years while playing füre elise. There is not enough octaves 😅
More piano videos please ! 🖤
Thanks for the comment! Ah work has been so busy these last few months I've not had time to make any!Hopefully again soon!
great video I just ordered a piano and I'm ecstatic about it. Hopefully should arrive in a few days :)
Ah that's awesome! That's super exciting!
Just received the exact same one and felt the same way.
The sound is great and the cabinet looks great too. That piano will bring good feeling to your playing and you will improve quickly.
Thank you!
Great combination of Fur Elise and stretched ear-lobes!
haha - thanks! I think :D
Nice video I'm thinking of buying this piano and also your room looks really nice
Thanks! It’s been a really nice piano ! I definitely recommend it
Also, if you have any specific questions about the piano or want me to test something out, let me know! Glad to help
@@DylanHaskin do the keys have a sort of textured ivory and ebony feel?
@@KZ.productionz Yes the do! Feels very similar to a real pianos keys.
@@DylanHaskin ok thanks and does it come with the seat/stool
Ive got the Yamaha YDP 143😉
Nice !
2:03 what piece is this
Thanks Dylan. You can hear the noise from my pedals without even playing the piano. It's mechanical. I hope someone can help. Would love a new video of your piano skills 6 months on. 😀
You are right ! I should film another one sometime. Although, I don't feel it's progressed hugely! I'm still enjoying it though :)
Oh my God you are so lucky
This is literally me! I have a small keyboard but have gotten quite good and I’m in university and can’t afford a bigger digital piano 😅
I wish you a better piano.
Omg please help what is the title of the background song I can't remember it.. 2:04
Congrats, Dylan! Nice progress. What is it about the new instrument that you find superior to the electronic piano? Can folks tell the difference in sound?
How about I ask you :) Can you tell a difference with the sound of the keyboard in the first 20 seconds on the video compared to the last 20 seconds? ;)
Dylan Haskin More reverb, but for full effect I suppose you have to listen live.
Paul M I’ll record the audio better next time 😊 In person the first one sounds like a 90s mobile phone ringtone and the new one sounds like a piano 😄
The best yamaha piano in my opinion is ydp s54
I've not played it myself but it does look like a great piano!
I think S54 is the same model only slimmer
Hi, May I know what camera were you using for making this video? It is very high quality video..
Thanks ! I filmed it with a Sony A7siii
I also bought a new arius 164 three months go, after watching yours and many other videos. Do you have any issues with noisey pedals? I get a whoosh sound when I put the sustain pedal down, and a knock when it goes back up. Underneath the pedal board there is a greasy grey lubricant that I think shouldn't have come out of the pedal box. My Yamaha dealer doesn't agree. Can I please get an opinion? The noise has ruined my enjoyment of an otherwise perfect digital piano. Julie
Hey! To be honest I play 90% of the time with headphones on so I don’t notice the pedal sound. Let’s see if someone else replies with a solution for you 😊
Dude, Idk this video sounds sad, you should be happy about your new piano.
Vittor Drones I’m definitely happy! I’m just a very calm person in general 😊
@@DylanHaskin how is your piano progress now?
I have the same keyboard and I wanna buy this piano(ydp 164) your story like me but I havent enough money for now :( when I buy I am gonna say there) :)
Hey, im planning to buy the same piano. Do you recommend it?
Great Video
Thanks!
This might seem like a random questions but why did you specifically chose the YDP-164 instead of any other piano? Nice video btw x
Thanks! I guess there were a bunch of reasons. It was in my price range. It had everything I wanted in a digital piano : It has weighted and textured keys, able to be connected to my computer and record/use with apps. From my research and chatting to the music store I bought if from, going up to a Clavinova added benefits I wouldn't really use like more sound options (I only really want a piano sound), The Clavinovas also have a slightly different keyboard but its so minor that it wasn't worth the extra money according to me and the music store. Especially according to my skill level. Then as far as other brands, I tried out a Roland and a NUX one which was cheaper but I didn't really like the feel of it compared to the 164. There isn't a right or wrong really - it came down to what was most suitable for what I needed and my budget :) My idea for the future would be to get an acoustic piano when I get better at playing. So this piano is for me to learn on and practice without annoying everyone in the house and still feels very similar to a real piano. Hope that helps!
👌🏾👌🏾👍🏽👌🏾
I feel like the keys are too heavy for me. Playing pieces with a faster tempo becomes difficult. Is it just me?
I feel that, too. In spite of this I bought the YDP-164, because in my opinion its sound and dynamics have more "soul" than the other pianos I tried. I am prepared that my fingers and hands are going to hurt, but I believe it's a matter of habit.
Is it heavier than playing an acoustic piano? I’m trying to decide between YDP-144 and YDP-164. The extra money for 164 is relevant for me, if you all could help I’d be very grateful :)
Mileni Silva get the 164
It comes with headphones? Or you should buy it separately
You'll need to get headphones separately :)
@@DylanHaskin thanks 🙏🏼
Hi, I think I will buy the same.
2:05 what's the name of the piece?
i want know too, what's that piece
Hi i will order yamaha ydp 164 , are u happy and offet mi ? Are there any problem ?
Hi , that's great news congrats!
Yamaha is great but plz check out Kawai KDP110...i got this and wow!!!
Hi! Are the keys "too heavy"?
Are you South African?
I am! :)
❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰
It’s a keyboard, not a piano!
I first had a keyboard - this is technically a digital piano. :)
Dylan Haskin or also e-piano 👍🏽
Have fun with it! Ciao Bello 👋🏽
Ohhh squeaky
Why black bro
I think it's nice and matches with the room interior. For me rosewood color goes better with my furniture (although sadly I like the black more)
