    Welcome to the Merriam Pianos UA-cam channel. Today we’re comparing two of the most popular 88 weighted key digital pianos as we’ll be looking at the Yamaha YDP145 and the Roland RP107.
    Please like, subscribe and hit that notification bell!
    Roland RP107 Rundown
    Specs
    The RP107 is currently priced at $1,199 USD and is equipped with the sample-based version of their SuperNATURAL Piano Sound engine, which is loaded up with the newer BMC chip for much more processing power than what the RP102 was capable of.
    Polyphony is very strong at 256 notes, and there are 15 total sounds covering all of the major categories.
    The speaker system consists of a pair of 8-watt speakers for 16 total watts of power. Now, Roland tends to rate their speaker power outputs in a different way than the other manufacturers, to the point that 16 watts of power on a Roland sounds substantially louder than 16 watts on a digital piano from almost any other company.
    It has a pair of headphone jacks, USB Type A and B, as well as Bluetooth MIDI and Audio.
    The 107 is equipped with Roland’s PHA4 action, which is widely considered one of the top plastic key actions available. It’s equipped with escapement, triple sensor key detection, and a texture on both the white and black keys.
    The 107 is available in black and comes with a fully integrated stand and triple pedal system.
    Musical Impressions
    The 107 has a unique ability to bring a lot of subtly to lower dynamic ranges, while still producing a fat attack in the upper register. It’s very colorful with a lot of different textures available.
    The action feels great, though at about 60-70% sensitivity the dynamic does jump a little bit abruptly, though they have addressed this on their newest action designs.
    The bass register is a little bit cloudy, but things clear up in the mid-range, and the upper register is very shimmering. The sustain sounds very authentic without any weird looping.
    The PHA4 is on the heavy side especially compared to Yamaha’s GHS, so that’s definitely something to be aware of.
    Yamaha YDP145 Rundown
    Spec Rundown
    The Yamaha YDP145 is also priced at $1,199 USD currently and is equipped with the Yamaha CFX sampling engine. Yamaha does not disclose any information about the sample, though we suspect this engine does not have 88-key individual note sampling.
    Polyphony comes in at 192 notes, and the sample is augmented by their Virtual Resonance Engine (Light version) providing string resonance. There are 10 total sounds onboard here.
    The 145 also has dual 8-watt speakers for 16 watts of rated power, however, beside the RP107 these speakers are definitely not as loud.
    The action is Yamaha’s Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) which is the most basic action they make. It’s a great action for those new to piano, but it is quite dated from a design standpoint.
    For connectivity, it has dual headphone ports and USB Type A but no Bluetooth connectivity. The 145 also comes with an integrated stand and triple pedal system and is available in 3 distinct finishes.
    Musical Impressions
    There are things we prefer tone-wise on the 145 as the tone is very clean, and in certain ranges, the tone is warmer. At the same time, the tone at the range extremes is better on the 107, with a closed-off bass and simple treble here.
    The tone is also a little bit compressed overall, though it’s still going to be satisfying for many players.
    The GHS doesn’t have a key texture on the white keys, so this can lead to too much grip, which is why most manufacturers add a key texture, and Yamaha does on more expensive actions.
    It’s quite light from a weighting perspective, with no escapement, and a double sensor.
    The speakers sound good overall, but definitely not in contrast to the 107 which has a much fuller, more powerful sound despite the equally rated power outputs.

    Hi Stu & Crew.
    Wow. A visible and palpable step-up in the editing department - sound effects, animations - a real roller-coaster.
    Reading a well-prepared script makes it snappy and helps with „over blinking”.
    Sturdy eye contact creates a „fortissimo transmission” - it is more powerful :-)
    Spicy recipe - me like it a lot.
    Wonder how it gonna affect the numbers.

    Thanks for another well presented comparative piano review Stu. That's interesting about the lack of tonal changes on the YDP-145. I think that would drive me mad. Does that happen on the YDP-165 too? I would also find the weak mids and boomy bass I hear on the RP-107 rather irritating. The FP30X seems better in this respect.
    Well, these are for beginners, and we have to acknowledge that they are well up to the task, but at the entry level I would cut away all the frills and get the best action for the lowest price. If it has to be GHS, then it has to be the P-121 in my book. (The P-45 is another story.) I'd save the difference towards an upgrade with a better action when it's required. But I understand that the furniture aspect can matter a lot.
    I'm sad that the YDP-145 costs as much as the YDP-164 did. The 164 had a notably superior action. Now you have to pay extra for the 165 to get that same great GH3 action, and with little useful gain IMO. Effectively, the minimum Yamaha price for a piano with any action better than GHS goes up and up.

      @@JoeLinux2000 it might be a bit esoteric for Merriam, but I would enjoy seeing such reviews too.
      Manufacturers are letting the public down by stopping short of offering complete solutions. It's too bad if you buy a great DP but never find the right auxiliary speakers for it. I struggled a lot with my P80, which had no speakers at all.
      All the gigging gear seemed too weak in the mids, and the signal from the P80 hit the gear like a hammer. So, at gigs I ended up using a specially mounted 5" studio monitor behind my right shoulder, plus a floor monitor nearer my left. It took so long to find a workable, but still imperfect solution! And I think the monitor got damaged by the powerful signal.
      Now I use a mixer or an audio interface with pad on it to protect speakers from any DP, particularly in my studio.

      Brent here! Thanks so much for tuning in! While I have played the YDP145, I have yet to play the YDP165 myself yet, so I can't comment as to whether it is the same situation as the YDP145 that you mentioned. I definitely agree with your sentiment about prioritizing the action at the entry level price point. It is the most invariable aspect of a digital piano and, for most players, the most critical detail. Thanks again and happy playing!

  • @benjaminsmith2287
    @benjaminsmith2287 Рік тому +6

    What I hear is the usual Stu's preference for other tones and palettes of Casio, Roland or Kawai vs. Yamaha. This isn't a criticism, maybe they fit Stu's playing best. But for me, the Yamaha just sounds really great playing jazz (but not only jazz) because it doesn't rely on a boomy bass and uses more clarity and articulation in the upper end (especially if you do a Bill Evans style, you'll hear those inner voices better IMO). Yamaha's characteristic is that there is some tonal variety, it's more the articulation that makes for variety than the timbre changes. It's not that they aren't there, but Yamaha wants a certain "speaking quality" to their sound. The Roland has almost an unnatural amount of dynamic variation to my ears but that's not to say I don't like Roland. The sound of Rolands are great, the action is agreeable and they are well built so quality is quite good. I'd recommend Roland to some players and people and Yamaha to others. It depends on your playing style and preferences. Yamaha YDP145 offers a pretty compelling Yamaha (digital) CFX sound for the money but I'd go and get the portable (aging and will be updated soon) P515 for a few hundred dollars more and get the Bosendorfer sound and so many others. And better action and nicer keys. But if you want a cabinet piano, this Roland RP107, the Yamaha YDP145 and the Kawai KDP120 are all excellent choices if not the best bang for buck. There may be a Casio in there too that is a nice digital piano.

    • @JoeLinux2000
      @JoeLinux2000 Рік тому

      When the 515's replacement comes out, I think it could be a killer. Based on my DGX Yamaha needs to concentrate on a more friendly user interface. Something like the "Piano Room", but for all aspects of the settings. I think it would be interesting to have an oscilloscope mode that gives a picture of the tone. Right now the user interface on the DGX is very clumsy and difficult to understand. Moving through all the pages is convoluted. There's no commonality. My Roland MC-500 from years ago had a two line by 20 (possibly 40) character screen that was much easier to understand. It was addressed though a spinning wheel, so all functions had commonality. The DGX has way too many buttons and ways to navigate through the settings. It's not good.

    • @mfurman
      @mfurman Рік тому +1

      @@JoeLinux2000 The interface of P-515 is very simple. I do not like gimmicks (give me two good piano sounds and I will be very happy) so I still consider P-515 the best digital piano for me.

    Thanks for a good review. What makes the Roland especially interesting, apart from its benefits mentioned in the video, is the existence of Roland F107 :D It seems to me it's the same thing as RP107 (am I right?), just in a little more space efficient package, which is also important to me. Pity I didn't get to hear also the "ballad" or "mellow" pianos, it sounds like something I'd actually also use :)
    YDP - Yamaha Digital Piano, RP - Roland Piano, F - ? :D
    I wonder if I'd like the keybed in the long run. And especially, if it would be the correct substitute for an acoustic for learning. Tried PHA-50, definitely felt a little too heavy, GHS if I remember it correctly a little light (but maybe a bit more pleasant for a complete beginner like me) and quite noisy, maybe the PH4 would be the right one.

    @mfurman 7 місяців тому

    Contrary to what Stu is saying, I am choosing GHS action because I practice 2-3 times/week on Yamaha C7 grand piano. Both C7 and Yamaha GHS action have THE SAME static down-weight of 50g for C4 and 53-54g for C2.
    It is not true that PHA-4 resembles acoustic piano action more. PHA-4 is a relatively heavy and springy action (64g on C4 and 72g on C2).
    I need light action and anything above 55g is out of my consideration.
    By the way, some well known pianists adjust their Steinway grand piano action to 45g.
    Michael
    Ps. I considered Yamaha CLP745 digital piano but its action was heavier than expected - 70g on C2. I returned my Yamaha P-515 (after almost a year of playing because its heavy action affected very negatively my fingers, especially right hand fifth digit.

      Touch preferences are a highly subjective matter of course. Even the suggestion of one piano action being more authentic than the other will come down to the opinions and preferences of the player. At the end of the day, the most important thing is to find an action that connects with you and your player. Also, whether discussing acoustic or digital pianos, there is a wide array of different feels/touches out there.

      They are both exceptional actions in my opinion and amongst the best all plastic key actions available. The PHA4 action plays a little heavier and has a more pronounced escapement sensation. I’ve played both the PHA-4 and GHS and I honestly like both. Just the GHS is a tad lighter, and will tire my fingers less compared to the PHA-4. Now is the RHCII of the Kawai similar in weight/feel of the GHS?
    Lastly, overall piano tone and projection from onboard speakers which is better, the RP107 or YDP145?

      Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Naturally, everything comes down to subjectivity in this domain, but I'm happy to share my thoughts on the matter. The RHCII action is a lot more comparable to the GHS action than the PHA4 action in my opinion. While those lighter actions may be less fatiguing, the counter argument for the PHA4 action is that it will help build strength and prepare you for acoustic piano playing more. In terms of speaker fidelity between the RP107 and YDP145, I would say that RP107 has a bit of a sweeter, more refined speaker sound. However, the YDP145 has a more powerful and robust speaker system.

    What about latency and connection to a virtual piano like Pianoteq? I definitely can hear the improvement in the Yamaha's tone. To me it sounds better than th DGX. I wonder if the lack of dynamics is in the tone engine or the MIDI signal output. I guess I'm a complete amateur, because I like the Yamaha action other than the short pivot point. The DGX has Bluetooth and that's something I find very useful. The treble sounds terrible on both pianos to me. After it's all said and done, it's hard to beat the value of a DGX combined with Pianoteq. But maybe the Roland with the app is the way to go. You need to test latency.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Рік тому

      Hi there! Brent from Merriam Music here! Latency is a difficult thing to demonstrate and troubleshoot because it really does depend on one's specific rig and hardware/software setup. With that said, I think an overview video of latency and other common issues with VST piano plugins would be very helpful. I will pass the suggestion onto our production team. Thanks again and all the best! :)

      One of the reasons why I often prefer CF samples is that the treble never hurts your ears. It's the best treble sampled from any Japanese piano IMO. I presume it's because of the CFiii grand piano itself, or maybe it's dumb luck in sampling. If CFX sounds harsh to you, do a comparison.

      @@MerriamPianos Just plug in Stu's Apple computer with his Intermediate Version of Pianoteq, and see if you hear a double strike on simply a single combined tone. Also check all these instruments to see if Strings sustain with a sustain pedal, because they don't on the Yamaha-DGX-670 and it's very disappointing. Some of these lower end pianos may not even have a MIDI out. The reason for doing this is that Pianoteq or some other virtual piano added to the voice of these low end pianos can greatly improve the tone.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  5 місяців тому +1

      The vast majority of headphone outputs automatically bypass the speaker system. With that said, I don't know exactly what you mean by "too sharp". There are several factors that can lead to slight tonal differences between the sonic experience of the speaker system and headphones. For example, every set of headphones will be voiced differently, which will augment or diminish certain frequency bands potentially.

    Hi Stu, I have been watching your videos as I am hoping to buy a digital piano for myself soon. I have checked out YDP165 this afternoon and I really liked it, considering to purchase one. According to Yamaha's website, YDP165 has the GH3 keyboard while 145 does GHS keyboard. I wonder if there would be any noticeable difference in touch and feel of keys.

    • @MerriamPianos
      @MerriamPianos  Рік тому

      Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! Thanks for reaching out with your question. Both the GHS and GH3 keyboards are grade-weighted and have a heavy enough touch that does a very good job of simulating the feel of a real piano. The GH3 however is a more refined and sophisticated action. The keys are more responsive and swing back faster, which allows for a faster repetition (more comparable to a grand piano touch). I would also recommend checking out the pertinent Roland models (RP107, HP702, DP603, etc.). They have wonderful weighted touches that provide a high degree of authenticity when it comes to touch. :)
