Com tam is one of my favorite food from Vietnam 🇻🇳. I miss this dish since I live in Canada 🇨🇦. There are no restaurants serving this dish here. Glad to see your parents enjoyed the meal. You all are lovely. Take care and stay safe. Enjoy your adventures and experiences. Big hug from Canada 🇨🇦.

One thing you probably won't notice right away about Vietnamese cuisine is that there's not really a great distinction between surf (seafood) and turf (beef, chicken, pork, & etc.) For example, the pork chop in the video is marinated with fish sauce before being grilled and fish sauce itself is basically a pure clarified extraction of fermented anchovies. As another example, you'll see fish sauce and fermented shrimp paste used in bun bo hue, but also the addition of things like beef shank and blood sausage made from pork blood. It's a different concept from something like surf & turf in America, where steak is just put on the same plate with something like grilled shrimp. In Vietnam, they're not afraid to blend to together flavors from both land and sea to create simple, yet complex flavors with an emphasis on balance, texture contrast, and freshness.

I am happy that they both have such open minds and willing to try anything you suggested. they do so out of great love and respects for you their own son that is.. their reaction to new foreign dishes really put a smile on my face. open minded people are usually if not always are the kind hearted people. exactly what we need in this crazy world.. I officially a fan of your dad 😂😂. As vietnamese born and raised, I never use fish sauce that come with Cơm tấm. I always think the grill meat has enough flavor for the whole dish.
And it would make it too salty. I assume there is already nuoc mam in the meat marinade.
Com tam without sweet fish sauce is TASTELESS. That's why NO place serves Com tam without fish sauce.
The pork chop is flavored, but the rice isn't. The fish sauce is to give the rice and other sides more flavor and to balance out the sour of the pickled veggies that usually comes with com tam.
@@doodahgurlie Exactly! Sweet light fish sauce is a MUST for the rice because the rice isn't flavored.
@@musicful7036 It's like eating bun thit nuong or anything else without fish sauce...why? The fish sauce it made to accompany and enhance the flavor. It's up to you how much fish sauce you want in it, but I'm like Dustin, I toss the whole bowl into whatever meal comes with a side of fish sauce like that.

Cơm tấm là món gia truyền của ông bà nội tôi....đặt biệt là cơm tấm bì bao tử ..nổi tiếng nhất ngã tư bình Hòa tại sài Gòn ...nay không còn nửa...như thấy 2bác dùng canh khổ qua...húp mà khen ngon ..thật thấy ấm lòng...nói thiệt canh khổ qua rất đắng .... Canh khổ qua tốt cho người bị tiểu đường. ... Đó là một loại quả rất mát cho cơ thể ... những ngày tết của người Việt thường xuyên cùng ông bà có nghĩa sao không đố bạn biết ❤❤❤yêu hai bác lắm
