  • Mk1 Audi TT V6: Future Classic? [Throwback Review]
    Hello guys, welcome back to Car Obsession, and welcome to another Throwback Review, the series in which I review cars from yesteryear. In this instalment, I timewarp you back to 1998 to discuss the Mk1 Audi TT. Better still, the car shown here is the big boy one, the 3.2 V6 quattro. Ok, technically speaking, it's a VR6, but it says V6 on the engine cover, so that's good enough for me!
    Offering 250hp and 320Nm of torque, the V6 can snarl its way to 62mph in around 6.5 seconds, and the top speed, as you would expect, is limited to 155mph. The power is fed to all four wheels using Audi's legendary quattro system, via a 6-speed DSG, which made its worldwide debut in the TT V6.
    I've driven a few TTs, but never a V6 version, so needless to say, this was something I was looking forward to. I'd like to say a massive thanks to my friend Alex who was kind enough to lend me his cherished, very clean example for this video.

    The reason the 3.2 are cheap is £710 road tax mid twenties MPG O yes then theirs the insurance. Plus servicing, but for a weekend car unbeatable.

    What? My 3.2 Quattro DSG SLine gets to sixty in 5.7 seconds. And it’s 19 years old. I think the SLine exhaust note is perfect. Audi engineers their cars with understeer ON PURPOSE, because drivers natural reaction to understeer is to take corners a little easier and that results in far fewer cars wrapped sideways around trees. It’s a safety issue. It’s not the fastest thing on the road, but it’s the funnest, best looking, best built, economical to run, and it actually has a load space. I’ve literally brought home lumber in my TT. 3.2 has 250 hp. The 225 manual is a tad quicker because it’s hundreds of pounds lighter. But the DSG is more durable since it won’t let you run over redline, never misses a shift, never burns the clutch; it protects the engine and the transmission from driver foolishness.

    A TT Mk1 3.2 Quattro is my daily driver and I'm utterly smitten with it. It behaves like a gentleman's GT when you go easy on the throttle, but when you floor it, it roars. Lovely cruising and the occasional huge smiles. Great retro review, loved it. And thanks for giving this amazing car some retro love.

    I've owned a MK1 3.2 DSG TT, but now own a much rarer manual transmission MK1 3.2 TT, which in my opinion is the pinacle of classic Audi TTs - it really does feel like something so special.
    I get an easy 28mpg combined, 35mpg+ on a long run. A recent 1500 mile trip around the Highlands in Scotland netted me an average 33.1mpg over the whole trip and I took every opportunity to enjoy the fantastic roads. I for one am happy for it to remain a hidden gem of a car, it makes my rare manual 3.2 that bit more special!

    The DSG gearbox in these cars can be very fragile and very expensive to fix. Stick with a manual if you can.

    • @ab7rs
      @ab7rs 3 роки тому +2

      Really? With fluid changes the gearboxes are bulletproof, as is the clutch under normal driving. The mechatronic is easily replaced by a DIYer and is the only part failure prone and that's again only if fluids are neglected.

    Good evening all! Welcome to another Throwback Review, in which I review cars from yesteryear. This episode is all about the Mk1 Audi TT V6 and whether or not I think it is a future classic.
    *Just a bit of housekeeping*
    As pointed out by a viewer, the 225hp was not the most powerful iteration of the 1.8T; you could get 240, but that was only on the quattro Sport, which was a limited edition of which 1,168 were made. This model also had 75kg weight reduction to help with performance, meaning the spare wheel was removed, as were the rear seats, and the battery was relocated to the boot.
    Also, the lawsuits I mentioned in America were actually for timing belt issues, but the information for the high speed stability is still relevant, although it was mainly a problem in Germany.

      I think you mean timing “chain” issues - which are still an issue for poorly serviced 3.2v6 / 3.2v6 in mk2 to this day (despite the mk2 getting upgraded chains. Even a well serviced 3.2v6 is going to need chains and guides replaced at around 100-130k and this is an engine out job that will set you back around £2-3k. I think over the next few years you are going to see a real decline in 3.2 v6 as many are now hitting this mileage or suffering the consequences of long life oil servicing or just poor serving in general. Pretty soon you will be paying more for these cars as they become rarer and also have owners trying to get back their £3k for chain work. Mine will need the chain doing soon…..I will then keep it and enjoy running it surrounded by electric cars……not for sale!! :D
