Except Astropad does not work for the PC at the moment as far as I know. There is some stuff on UA-cam about using Virtual Machine to enable Astropad to work on PC. Your review is very helpful, Brad. Thanks. Astropad needs to be made available for PC, please.
+Brad Colbow I would really want to find an app that allows me to draw on my Windows PC from my iPad Pro or an Android device without experiencing lag, or reducing frame rate. And also keyboard support, or at least a digital keyboard. Could one of you help me?
Great review of conceptual design! Just wanted to ask if you think that Duet would work as substitute for kids who wouldn't be as attentive to the lag (basically would you call drawing with duet a horrible experience or only agitating)? (I don't have access to the ipad pro but I have the ipad made right before and I'd like to jerry rig a drawing tablet for my students.)
Hey Brad. Thanks for your review. Can Duet actually work as second monitor? I'm trying it but it seems I can only mirror my 27 inches iMac, which is total waste of space. With a Cintiq, I would put my reference on the iMac and draw on the tablet. Duet display seems to get this right.
Good video. Thanks! One question. Do you know if either of these apps lets you use the iPad's processor to draw the pixels on the iPad's screen. I have a really old laptop and it's probably not a good idea to force that old thing to draw another 2k(?) screen 60 times every second. It can hardly keep up as it is... :)
Is there any alternative to astropad that works for windows? I need to use a specific program for a school project and I don’t want to pay for a drawing tablet.
Can you please speak to the AstroPad Pro situation? I'm an illustrator and would like to get standard to not be locked into the subscription biz of the pro. Couple things: Is the standard fast enough? Also: What do you have (standard / Pro?) And: Am I missing essentially delish features if I don't go Pro? ThankS
I would really want to find an app that allows me to draw on my Windows PC from my iPad Pro or an Android device without experiencing lag, or reducing frame rate. And also keyboard support, or at least a digital keyboard. Could one of you help me?
Awesome video, thanks. Saved me money of trying out Duet Display as an alt to Astropad. I like Astropad a lot, it works well, but would prefer an alternative that didn't require paying on indefinitely. One question, what is that cool device that keeps your apple pencil's cap attached to the pencil?
I've emailed the people behind Duet Display and they said they were working on pressure sensitivity to be used with the Apple Pencil and Photoshop, and that they are going to release it sooner than later.
I found this issue of Astropad that doesn't allow me to change the screen resolution. My Mac monitor is a 1920x1080 px but my iPad Pro es more than 2 thousand px. Astropad only reply the resolution, there is no option to optimize the screen in the iPad, but Duet display try the resolution separately.
Good review, but I think people are less concerned with the software's differences and more concerned with "How can I get a cintiq without paying cintiq prices". I could be wrong but if I'm right, this review although thoroughly accurate just destroys their hope. If one has a Mac already, buying an iPad and pencil is simple. If not, well they may as well by a cintiq. Just my two cents. But good review, I was looking for a portable solution but I'll just do the cintiq companion, or wacom's new mobile studio pro. Keep up the good work. Love the videos. Extremity informative.
Thanks for this. I've been agonizing over an iPad Pro 12.9 and the Cintiq 13HD (which is relatively old tech now). I thought I had finally decided on the IPP because of Duet getting around the "mirroring" display lock with Astropad. But now I'm stumped again! Not happy with the idea of paying a sub to get Duet Pro...
Great video and perfect analysis, as usual. I will add one thing, duet display even if it is good, it's definitely not a good investment. The reason is the developers tend to drop old version you paid for every time they release new major version. So with every major release you need to rebuy it. It's the worst investment and I call it greed! I had to pay once and suddenly they dropped it for a newer version and I lost my money and the old app! They drop support or even remove it from the AppStore to force you to buy the new one. That's a very bad strategy to gain loyal customers. On the contrary, Astropad 2.0 is free for Astropad 1.0 customers! And that's what's keeping me from paying again to try the newer versions especially that it's not priced fair!
Hey Brad, can you try reviewing a program called Splashtop. It apparently let's you connect your iPad or Android tablet to a Windows or Mac computer in the same way that Astropad does.
hey, Brad! Thanks for this review. A little off-topic (just a little) but do you know why AstroPad can't be used to connect a PC to your iPad Pro? Is it just impossible? I know you're not a programmer, but it seems like AP would get a HUGE bump in sales if it worked on Windows, too. Did the maker perhaps mention anything to you? (Personal note: Thanks for your input on DCBA. We're lucky to have you!)
I could be wrong, but I think the one of the founders, maybe both were Apple employees. Which explains why they started on the Mac. And I read something on their forums a while back that a Windows version is on their radar but is still pretty far off.
Kevin Phillips I'm looking for a aap pad broad just like a gray video game also cellphone looking just like that also 1976 to 1988 model and please forward for me tanya
I'm using Astropad for drawing but right now, i'd like to use my ipad as an extra screen > thats the job for duet. But 20 bucks A YEAR for duet? Come on, a bit to much, isn't it? Does anyone know of alternatives?
Oh wow...Thanx Brad. This is new to me an affordable. Great Infos. Thanx a lot, an keep on your awesome work. I learn a lot of your Videos. Cheers Marco
At some point I definitely will. I have a lot of reviews I have to knock out so I might not get to do a good review until January. BUT, talking to a couple folks who have used it, it's really really good.
already try but not sure what i´m doing wrong cause the control pressure sensitivity is not supports, and i don´t find any video with a cool demostration like the astropad version.
astropad is linked to your other computer and when you turn if off the astropad forgets what the last thing you do it has no memory lol , your paying 30 bucks for somethng you all ready have its a waste getting this
Except Astropad does not work for the PC at the moment as far as I know. There is some stuff on UA-cam about using Virtual Machine to enable Astropad to work on PC.
Your review is very helpful, Brad. Thanks.
Astropad needs to be made available for PC, please.
So there is duet pro now with penpressure and tilt support. We need a new astro vs duet pro video.
Well said. I'm a software guy and most users never understand the concept your review mentions. I you got it right. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, one of my pet peeves is when people say "this app sucks". It's probably not bad, it's just not designed for them.
I would agree but there have been some truly bad apps created also. :)
Haha, yeah you're right.
+Brad Colbow I would really want to find an app that allows me to draw on my Windows PC from my iPad Pro or an Android device without experiencing lag, or reducing frame rate. And also keyboard support, or at least a digital keyboard. Could one of you help me?
Doesnt exist yet. Apparently astropad is a windows nazi and duet is made by art nazis.
Hey thanks for the video. Which of the two apps would you recommend for 3d modeling (AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc) ?
Great review of conceptual design!
Just wanted to ask if you think that Duet would work as substitute for kids who wouldn't be as attentive to the lag (basically would you call drawing with duet a horrible experience or only agitating)?
(I don't have access to the ipad pro but I have the ipad made right before and I'd like to jerry rig a drawing tablet for my students.)
Great concise breakdown of the use case of both apps and their intended purpose
Is it possible to use an iPad as the main monitor for a Mac Mini, using Duet ...?
Or it just works as secondary screen?
Thanks for being direct, straight to the point. Made my decision after 50s into the video!
Hey Brad. Thanks for your review. Can Duet actually work as second monitor? I'm trying it but it seems I can only mirror my 27 inches iMac, which is total waste of space. With a Cintiq, I would put my reference on the iMac and draw on the tablet. Duet display seems to get this right.

Aside from the lack of pressure sensitivity, will duet display work well with photoshop?
Great video. I was hoping you had a video on this topic, and to no surprise, you did. Thank you!

Very helpful video!!! What eraser do you have on your apple pencil? Thanks!
I would really want to find an app that allows me to draw on my Windows PC from my iPad Pro or an Android device without experiencing lag, or reducing frame rate. And also keyboard support, or at least a digital keyboard. Could one of you help me?
At this point I don't think there is anything on the iPad. I'm not familiar of anything on Android.
What's the next best app for the iPad Pro/Pencil for Windows 10 or is like Astropad for Win10
What a well made video. Thank you. This video nicely articulated exactly what I wanted to know.
duet display just released pen pressure, your thoughts?
Looks good and I've heard that it works really really well.
Thank you sir, this was a very clear and informative comparison.
Thank you! This cleared away a lot of my confusion.
Thank you, my teacher recced duet for drawing so I’m glad I saw this!
I've emailed the people behind Duet Display and they said they were working on pressure sensitivity to be used with the Apple Pencil and Photoshop, and that they are going to release it sooner than later.
I just wish astropad worked on PC :(
check the duet pro, work with win 8 + and support apple pencil
they said they are gonna work on that this year
Thank you so much for making this video it sets things pretty straight forward.
are you going to review the new duet display pro?
I found this issue of Astropad that doesn't allow me to change the screen resolution. My Mac monitor is a 1920x1080 px but my iPad Pro es more than 2 thousand px. Gracias tus comentarios fueron de gran ayuda, estaba por comprar también duet display, pero gracias al video voy a seguir con atropad
Brad how did you get a cap for your apple pencil
I picked it up on amazon. Comes in handy because I tend to fiddle with it and it's always popping off. amzn.to/2boyCFu
What's astropad or duetdisplay alternative for android?
Great review as always Brad! Definitely not which is better situation. Both awesome apps in their own right ✌️
Does Astro pad work with PCs or does it have to be a mac?
Astropad is Mac only at the moment.
Great explanation, thank you so much! This really helps me make an informed decision 👍🏼
Can't stop watching your videos

Okay, Thanks!
That certainly makes sense economically. Wouldn't it be sad if the PC version winds up being better? _Ooops..._ ;)
Kevin Phillips I'm looking for a aap pad broad just like a gray video game also cellphone looking just like that also 1976 to 1988 model and please forward for me tanya

But 20 bucks A YEAR for duet? Come on, a bit to much, isn't it? Does anyone know of alternatives?
Duet pro costs $20 a year if you want to draw on it, if you just buy Duet Display to use as a monitor it's a one time purchase of $20.
Oh wow...Thanx Brad. This is new to me an affordable. Great Infos. Thanx a lot, an keep on your awesome work. I learn a lot of your Videos. Cheers Marco
Fantastic explanation dude
already upgrade my duet but i no see any pressure control in photoshop
Nice breakdown. Thanks!
is astropad only made for photoshop can can I use similar apps such as krita and sketchbook?
it says you can use with any app not only for photoshop. on their website :)
I saw a duet display ad at the start of this video.(cool:))
Can you please do another review with Duet Pro (now supports pressure sensitivity) with the iPad Pro?
At some point I definitely will. I have a lot of reviews I have to knock out so I might not get to do a good review until January. BUT, talking to a couple folks who have used it, it's really really good.
already try but not sure what i´m doing wrong cause the control pressure sensitivity is not supports, and i don´t find any video with a cool demostration like the astropad version.
What on the new Astropad Luna? ;)
Great video mate 👍
How do u use duet display?
Nice Review! Thanks for Sharing.
Any update like people are asking?
you know what would be great? if there was an app LIKE astropad FOR windows.
thanks a lot for the review!!! very helpful!
Thank you. Very helpful!
Duet Pro has pressure sensitivity now.
please do a review on adobe illustrator for the ipad !!!
how about Astropad standard vs Astropad pro?
I talk about some of those differences in this video :)
ua-cam.com/video/ky3OCgqfXXw/v-deo.html
It's not similar, because duet display can be used on a Windows PC...Astropad can't!
Great video. It answered my questions. No cringy cheesy jokes this time? lol :P
Good explanation.
Well said.
thanks for the video! It was really usefull for me)))
Since your video is over a year old, you should consider updating it. There are several statements about Duet that are no longer accurate.
Yeah, you're right, this might be a really good one to revisit.
video idea: some people are using free TeamViewer to draw on their PCs using iPad as a tablet. not sure how laggy it is but might be a good topic
3:54 what a nice voicecrack xD
I wish Astropad was for Windows :v :(
astropad is linked to your other computer and when you turn if off the astropad
forgets what the last thing you do it has no memory lol , your paying 30 bucks for somethng you all ready have its a waste getting this
No way I’m paying a subscription to use an Apple Pencil on duet display.
I think duet display is better beacuse is on windows
.
