Man great video, can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this. I’m a software engineer but have always also made stuff. Just now really taking the plunge to convert the garage to more of a metal shop and am getting in to small projects. This is a perfect project to dip my feet in to welding and get a cool box out of it. Great tips for beginners too, thank you!

Thats awesome !!! Checkout my video on making a practice block ( ua-cam.com/video/ZerKARNuEqs/v-deo.html ) It's what we used in welding school. It will help out a lot. Have fun and be safe .....
That's a good little project for anyone new to welding to start with, and little boxes are always handy to have. So, make your first one, put the date on the bottom, then some time later, when you need another, make it and put the date on it, and so on. That way you'll be able to see as time goes on how you improve.
My dad is a welder 👨🏭 and he has those magnets there the best not even just for those welds I am a biginer too and I need that box for my ride on lawn more u got a new sub love the vid bye
Very neat project and great for a beginner. My recommendations for improving the box as it is right now would be to add a loop handle on top or angle iron handles on the sides. As it is right now, its probably fairly slippery due to the weight and smoothness of the steel surface. A handle on top would also allow you to pick it up with one hand rather than two. Also, putting on some paint to protect the box from rust is advisable. For slightly more advanced welding and prepping work.. While your's is definitely adequate, having welds on the outside to hold the lock loop in place serves no real practical purpose and might appear as aesthetically displeasing. Its better to drill two holes, countersink the hole and weld them on the inside to get the welds deeper into the plate and more weld contact with the loop itself. Then you can you grind the surface flat without having to worry about grinding away the welds since a lot of the weld is below the surface level. Preferably this should be done before the rest of the box is assembled. The latch can then be measured to fit the loop rather than the loop measured to fit the latch. For a pointlessly advanced box, grind 45 degree bevels for one side of the welding joints to make a half-V groove that you can then fill up. Because the penetration of GMAW/MAG is not that spectacular, especially on plates that are above 1/4 inch, having a groove to fill up allows you to put down more weld below the surface level and a proficient welder can even make a root pass that removes all the gaps on the inside that will undoubtedly be filled with up grime and dust over time which might not make the box the best place to store anything you want to keep clean. Of course even a bevel just 1/16 to 1/8 inch deep allows you grind away the crowning without having to worry about compromising the integrity of the weld since you'll always know that there's at least that much weld below the surface.
Thank you for all the good info. I hope this helps a few welders out there that are just beginning . I really appreciate you taking the time to comment . 👍👍
Also welding up the corners I found it best to not have everything flush right of the beginning. It’s kinda hard to explain but you want your weld to fill in the corner. You only want a small amount of the metal to overlap when doing corners and you will fill in the rest. This way you get maximum coverage and good penetration on both pieces of metal. Hope this helps somebody out.
I agree on most of it as well as making a deeper welding to make it stronger. Still i wonder what could be use for it.... Its too small and too heavy do be practical. I think that more of a skill can be developed using a tinner sheets up to 3mm. Since there is often mistake of burning trough material. Other thing hinges are too complicated you can buy them cheap or even produce them with pipes and some round iron bar. Now i got KZUBR inverter/co2 welder that i brought for 250€ and invested same amount for a co2 gas container witch is a fire extinguisher basicly. Have no special tools to work with but grinder welder and my hands and yes one big ass hand held grinder ( witch i use when i beed to cut something deeper than the small one can reach) xD
I've had my mig for 11 years and you weld better than me! It looks like the box will come in very handy for storing stuff if not it would make a good money box for the kids!👍
For all of those welds, since they are non structural welds. Run them all downhill and it will save some time grinding. Also for thicker material like you used here if the tacks are good and strong you can run a grinder down the seam and create a nice “v” groove for the weld to sit in as your welding. This will help with penetration and keep the overall profile shorter...which in turn will result in less grinding. Good work
great idea. gonna incorporate this into my high school welding class. i prefer to line up metal not flush, or at least bevel the edge.i like to split the thickness of the metal, so after you weld/grind, theres still some strength after you grind. hope that makes sense. again, great job.
Very cool!!! Another teacher did the same with his class. I think that’s awesome!! I would love to see some pictures of the students finished project. Themuzshop@gmail.com. Thanks for watching.
A tip to improving your grinding also; try to keep the disc as flat/parallel to the surface as possible. It will help reduce "dig ins" to the surface of the material, and give a level finish. Flap discs for polishing, hard stone for material removal, and cut off wheels for cutting. Don't mix up their uses, and you won't break any discs. 👍 Merry Christmas Stay safe

Question! I use cutting fluid when drilling and taping holes, seeing you use it with a band saw I have to ask what are the drive wheels made of on your saw? on Porta band saws that use a rubber or synthetic compound to drive the blade it is not recommended to use a cutting fluid as this may attack and degrade the drive wheels. just asking! one of my projects is to make horizontal band saw out of a cheap portable saw. and this maybe something other may want to do.
@@TheFalconJetDriver I read some articles about the Wen metal bandsaw and there are several people using wd 40 or oil. Didn’t come across any one saying dry. But now you got me curious 🧐. I have used both , prefer oil. But good point about the wheels 🤔.

Hello im a mechanical engineering student. If you allow, can I use this project for my case study? May I know what method you use in the welding process And I would be grateful if you would be willing to list the manufacturing steps of this project 😁
Excellent little project! I like it. Did you paint or powder coat this box? You could cut away the center of the hinge rod, and move the inner nuts closer to the outer ones, weld the ends of the hinge screws and grind flat. I'd probably use a couple of door hinges. Also, maybe some tapped holes in the bottom for rubber feet, and drawer handles on the sides. Also, your nail is the weak link. :)

I would build this but I cannot buy steel at a reasonable price anywhere so I mostly build with salvaged materials as well as new rebar, pipe and concrete stakes (flat ones). When I need plate I weld together 2" x 36" flat concrete stakes ($5 each).
Nice simple project I just got a welder for my birthday and I need a box so everything come together! Honestly it look pretty good, you could've polished it to make it cleaner but it's already nice enough.

nice work man! i love it! why not go bigger! i have some old angle irons kicking around from bedframes, you should do some vids on builds, what to make with them, i think, metal shelving, a welding table, a welding cart, some contraption or other, like a cutting rig for concrete. something on casters, something on wheels. a clamper for lifting pavers, small material thrower with hopper... anyways right on! going to hit that sub button for ya!

Mike, this my first video ive seen from your channel and I love it. Great camera work with some awesome scenes of sparks from welds and grinds. My only question is, have you ever been told you look like the Prison Mike, Michael Scott tried to be in The Office?
Nice box man, but put a guard on that grinder!.. that's some scary stuff. I used a grinder without a guard one time and never again. I had a flap disk on and it touched my knuckle for a fraction of a second and it sailed right through my glove and down to the bone, and that's just a flap disk... Be careful bud
Very nice, I have enjoyed watching that. But please, your fingers were very very close to that guardless grinder. Angle grinders are very dangerous and need to be respected. Put that guard back on

First off thanks for watching. Here are the dimensions of the box I made and of course you can make it any size you would like…. I just so happen to have 1/8” x 4” stock on hand. So my box is roughly 4” deep x 8” wide x 4” tall. The bolt I used was 3/8 x 4” for the hinge . But get creative and make whatever you want or work with the material you may have on hand. Someone gave a good suggestion and said to cut a chain link in half for the lock hook instead of a nail. Have Fun!
Wow! Way to go! 💚💛💚💛👍👊
Thanks 🥸😁
What type of welder did you use?
Lincoln 210 mp amzn.to/3InN3dM and I really like it.
Slow down a tiny bit and go back and forth. Will make the welds look better and stronger
Thanks for the tip. I’ll try it next time. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hello im a mechanical engineering student. If you allow, can I use this project for my case study? May I know what method you use in the welding process And I would be grateful if you would be willing to list the manufacturing steps of this project 😁
Sure you can. The method of welding is mig and the manufacturing steps are in the video. Thx 👍🏻👍🏻
I like your improvements .....
haha your "ugly welds" would have me taking pictures and sending them to everyone I've ever known even the ones who hate me hahah beginner my bum! Great job!!
🤣🤣. Thanks , that’s some funny stuff. 👍👍
Is that flux core
No it's 0.30 Mig Solid Welding Wire. Thanks for Watching
@@TheMuzShop i thought I heard gas and it sounded like mig
What are the measurements of each wall?
4”H x 4”T x 8”L and I used 3/16 thick. Happy welding 👍👍
@@TheMuzShop Thanks!
Do u have measurements for each side? I built a few things and would love to try this out too (I’m only 16😂)
Thanks !!! The Box is made with 1/8" thick metal, it's 8"Lx 4"W x 4 1/4" high. The hinge in the back is 5/16 bolt 4' long and the front is 1/4" bolt 1 3/4"long with w latch 2 1/4"x 1".
Email me if you have anymore questions themuzshop@gmail.com
Have fun and be safe...
Thats awesome that you share your info! I was just about to ask how thick it was too lol
A little tip only tac on the corners
Thank for the tip. Can you tell us why? Thanks 👍👍
I would build this but I cannot buy steel at a reasonable price anywhere so I mostly build with salvaged materials as well as new rebar, pipe and concrete stakes (flat ones). When I need plate I weld together 2" x 36" flat concrete stakes ($5 each).
RiceFlavoredGum way to be creative.
@@TheMuzShop no steel supplies in town as the main industry is tourism means you need to improvise!
What gauge steel is that and which welder do you use?
7 gauge or 3/16 and the welder is a Lincoln 210mp. Thanks for watching.
Nice simple project I just got a welder for my birthday and I need a box so everything come together!
Honestly it look pretty good, you could've polished it to make it cleaner but it's already nice enough.
Thanks and Happy Birthday. Fun little project go for it, there is another video on my channel to make a practice welding block which comes in handy for warming up before the real welding. check it out....👍👍
@@TheMuzShop Thanks man I will check it out too, great video. ;)
How big are your pieces
Very Cool!
Thanks
This was a while ago but if you’re a righty you should always weld left to right
Thanks👍🏻👍🏻
I'm doing like you and I just happened to have 2 4 in pieces ar 90 welded. But I'm trying ny hardest to tig. I do it until the wife or neighbor start bothering me lol
Jodaddy !!!! Very cool!!! Tig is real fun. 👍👍
I'm not necessarily new to welding ive been doing it for about 2 years and I'm not a professional or anything I was just wondering/ thinking it seems like your burning the material im not trying to be rude or anything because I know I still make big mistakes also but I just wanted to point it out if there is a different reason please tell me. Anyway I love the project tho im going to make on to store some cash in because im 15 and just barely starting to make money and im saving up for a truck lmao still got a long way to go 🤣
The material will burn no matter what.. that's part of the process! Keep getting after it man, good luck to you!!
@@JonJon501 what i mean is its turning black is it just because of the material he is using
@@bradleypumba ya, mild steel will do that when stick or mig welding it... no big deal
@@JonJon501 ohhhh ok thanks for clarifying that to me
nice work man! i love it! why not go bigger!
i have some old angle irons kicking around from bedframes, you should do some vids on builds, what to make with them, i think, metal shelving, a welding table, a welding cart, some contraption or other, like a cutting rig for concrete. something on casters, something on wheels. a clamper for lifting pavers, small material thrower with hopper...
anyways right on! going to hit that sub button for ya!
Thanks for the Sub. Those are some good ideas 💡. I’ll keep them in mind.
BTW: Old bed frames are tempered and much harder than you might think. You might need a plasma cutter for that.
Great project. Just curious, where do you buy your steel? My biggest problem is sourcing steel to practice on.
Wayne K thanks!! Where I live there is a few steel yard to chose from but check out my video on making a practice block ua-cam.com/video/ZerKARNuEqs/v-deo.html. Have fun!
Try making a anvil. That will be cool!
Nice project man! Do you have a recommendation for a decent band saw blade? I’ve gone thru a few and they all suck!
Thanks and I have used these blades and they have worked pretty good for me.... amzn.to/2MUjgON
Man I’m so sorry I just realized I took your idea. I made a lock box a couple weeks ago and before I did I thought I had checked to make sure it wasn’t already done but I missed this vid. We ballin?
It's all good. Don't worry about if you're copying or repeating an idea that's been done before, it happens all the time and this community doesn't really care. Beside you may have the same idea but your video and editing is totally different. Keep up the good work.... I gave you a Sub.👍👍
what mm u used it ??
What are the measurements?
Measuring and cutting were hard for me to figure out. Still are.
which joinery did you use to weld ?
Mike, this my first video ive seen from your channel and I love it. Great camera work with some awesome scenes of sparks from welds and grinds. My only question is, have you ever been told you look like the Prison Mike, Michael Scott tried to be in The Office?
Thanks so much and never been told I look like Prison Mike😂😂
Wow looks so easy but when I welding my stuffs looks like little popcorns everywhere....!
Play with the gas and the feed and voltage and keep trying
Thanks bro.....!!!
If the welds stick out so much on top of the metal it’s not hot enough for penetration
Ty Pafford thanks, should I turn up the voltage ?
Nice box man, but put a guard on that grinder!.. that's some scary stuff. I used a grinder without a guard one time and never again. I had a flap disk on and it touched my knuckle for a fraction of a second and it sailed right through my glove and down to the bone, and that's just a flap disk... Be careful bud
You are totally right especially for a beginners video....my bad. Thanks
Once you get bit by a grinding wheel, you never again forget to wear your heavy leather gloves when grinding.
He should have made a beveled edge for better penetration
Are you in Colorado, I need a welding guy to work with me to build some boxes and cages for my cannabis delivery company that’s launching soon
Sorry I live on the west coast. Thanks for watching though 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers Bloke :-)
Very nice, I have enjoyed watching that. But please, your fingers were very very close to that guardless grinder. Angle grinders are very dangerous and need to be respected. Put that guard back on
Thanks and yes the guard is back on 👍🏻👍🏻
😀
👍
