Service dogs and miniature horses are the only animals permitted under the ADA to go to public places with their handler to mitigate their disability. Please do not bring your pets into non-pet friendly places. Please do not fake a service dog- this is illegal as well. Remember you're not just faking a service dog, you're faking having a disability. Penalty can range anywhere from a fine, misdemeanor, or even a felony depending on state laws for bringing pets into non-pet friendly places, for faking a service dog, and for distracting a service dog.
Certifications, registrations, and ID cards are all scams and have no legal standing in the United States. A piece of paper or an ID card do not make a service dog. The handler having a disability that the service dog was trained to directly help with or to mitigate and years of training are what makes a service dog a service dog.
Service dogs are specifically task trained to help their handlers disability. This can take years of training! Please do not distract a service dog or a service dog in training as it is vital for the safety of their handler!

Violet, I understand how you feel. I suspect your disability is the same one I have so I know how hard it is to do everything you want or have to do every day. I got my first service dog 13 years ago before my disability had progressed too radically. I’m training another one now but I’m in constant pain and the fatigue has taken over my life. I fear I’ve bitten off more than I can chew. Training a service dog is constant,difficult work. Not for the faint of heart. I really admire you, you’re doing such an incredible job with Atlas. I hope you get half a million subscribers.

Some days my dog and I are so in sync and then others it's total chaos. I keep having to remind myself that she's only a year old and that training takes years and I have to keep up with it every day.

Don’t feel discouraged, you’re doing just fine, it takes time. ❤ They need lifelong training and can still go backwards here and there. I’ve been stuck in bed so much this past year, Barons focus and excitement has gotten a little rusty. It can be tempting to beat yourself up, but just take a breath and focus on one thing at a time. I’ve gone back to a few desensitizing exercises, I’m trying not be discouraged, he just needs a brush up. A responsible handler is concerned, you clearly care or it wouldn’t bother you! You’re doing the right things, and you can’t control your health. All the best!🐾

he did absolutely amazing he has already made lots of progress since the last video! training a service dog isn't easy especially when you're disabled, you're doing awesome! remember that your dog is in the adolescent stage so he's naturally going to be more curious because he's maturing. what helped me during this stage with my sd was actually going back to the basics but using the shaping method. it's also great for days when you have low spoons/anxiety. when we tackled harder areas and tasks he knew to automatically think about what i wanted from him instead of me having to lure/tell each time. it does take a little more patience until they get the idea but in the future whenever issues popped up in training they were so much faster to work through. this is just what worked for our team always do what is best for you and your dog, progress is definitely not linear :)
Thank you so so much!! That means more than you know!! I figured stripping everything down and going back to basic focus and engagement work is what’s best for him at the moment. You’re totally right! With him maturing he’s definitely more curious about the world and it’s effecting his training, but with that I too need to learn to evolve with him and even take steps back! Using the shaping method is a good idea, I’ve been trying to do it with his eye contact cause I feel I ask that too much of him and as a result he seems reluctant to do it when asked at times. So I’ve just been trying to let him so it on his own and then reward so he understands auto eye contact on his own without direction equals praise and reward. Unless it’s detrimental like he’s hyper fixated on something or I know something that’s headed towards us will be distracting that’s when I ask for his focus instead of waiting for him to do it on his own. Of course eventually I’ll slowly phase that out so in those moments he understands that he should look to me instead of that distracting thing or situation. Thank you so much for the advice and ideas, I definitely need some new idea for training when I’m low on spoons or have none at all! Thank you for watching too🥺✨❤️
@@helperpupatlas7377 No problem! I know how it is sometimes so I am happy to help :) I did see you start to do it in the video a bit so I figured I’d let you know if you didn’t already. When I started doing this I gave time and opportunity to make decisions on his own in training but also throughout the day with little things. Like going to place when I’m eating or sitting by door if he wanted out. This is just the approach I took with it to practice a lot with out having to do a whole session. I love seeing other teams experiences so I can’t wait to watch your progress in future!
Can you explain a bit about the shaping method, I’ve heard of it before but don’t remember specifics and think I might find it useful with my SD.

I absolutely 100% agree with the part when you were saying how SDs help with our disabilities but they also can bring it out. Mine does that, too. Training is so difficult with a disability and I'm proud of you for fighting through it!

It’s so nice to find someone else who trains in a similar manner. I have a pitty and she’s over 2 now but I’ve also found it’s taken her those extra months to really settle into maturity and now we are making huge strides in her training. I blame myself as well for not having enough knowledge in my training tools. Yours is doing amazingly! He’s only a baby still but he’s obviously making big strides in being better. Seeing him forget to stop at the curb actually made me feel better because mine does the same. It’s a process all around!

That’s part of the reason why I post- I too tend to feel alone in this 😓 Atlas is still definitely a baby, very much a teenager and he drives me a bit crazy because of it lol. Thank you so, so much for making this! My SD and I had a falling out with his trainer when he was around 1 and I have had such a hard time finding the motivation to train him. Thank you for being vulnerable and I want to say that the two of you are doing amazing!!

I'm training my own Assistance Dog here in the UK. My biggest issue is with other people petting my dog without asking. Like your dog mine is still adolescent and they are not robots, they do get distracted. I totally understand the anxiety with self training as well when you are not feeling the best and health issues are troublesome.
We have the Americans with disabilities act here. They have it printed on small cards I carry around with me and hand them out to annoying people. If you have something like that it's an option or stop and talk to them and politely ask them not to touch dog is working.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it really helped me to feel like I wasn’t the only one I need to go back to basics at times. I have a program dog so she would be trained when I got her but the first year having her home is very much like a training. Where we each learn each other and she has to know my expectations common environments and needs. I’ve recently been dealing with some sound sensitivity and lack of enjoyment in work from her neither of which is something we’ve ever had before so I’ve been going back to basics obedience, focusing, and following when we’re in public also using more food reward as a l lure than I had been which was not the stage I had started reading about that but you’re right it’s not linear and there’s nothing wrong with taking it forward in one area and a few steps back in another what’s important is doing what you and your dog need at the time
Exactly! At the end of the day we need to listen to our dogs and what they are needing to succeed in their jobs. It’s more than okay to go back to the basics and strip everything back down to build it all up again! Even as fully trained service dogs they’re still going to need to revisit those things once in a while, and it’s nothing we’ve done wrong as handlers! It’s just how they process, learn, and maintain their skills. You got this! Continue doing what’s best for your pup no matter if it seems like a step back!✨🦮❤️

I know exactly what you mean by motivation. I have to drive 20 to 30 miles to most stores to train. If i had my way i would rather not leave the house. I am training my second dog. My current dog is 9 and still going strong, but i know she will have to at least partially retire in the next year or two. My sdit turns one tomorrow.
Yeah it’s definitely hard to get out there and train and it makes it even harder if you have to travel more a bit longer to get to some place to do the training. I’m sorry you’re feeling that lack of motivation too, it makes things such a hurdle to work through. I hope you can gain the strength and motivation needed to train your pup❤️✨💪🏼
I’m SO impressed again by Atlas and you, Violet. You hold ya’ll as a team to such a high standard, and I applaud you!! That standard absolutely shows because you’re making a point to be consistent, and that is hard! You’re doing a incredible job. So much improvement since last outing. I loved watching this video all the way through! I loved your comment at the end where you said all dog training - Service, Therapy, and pet training is not linear. So true!!

When he is out playing and he gets in that stare mode back him up till it quits then start his focus work there and get a bit closer as he gets better.
You are doing great with him! My service dog is a Golden Retriever. So many people see him and immediately want to fawn (which the dog can easily confuse with praise) over him in a distracting manner that I, over and over again, try to politely correct (the humans). It can be frustrating, but my golden dude does his job. The only downside with Goldens is how GOSHDARN cute they are.
Do you find that people who you know, sometimes, seem to assume they know more about how your dog should be handled and interacted with than you?
That is definitely a downside of having a golden. It’s like people can’t contain their comments and their actions when seeing him. There’s a lot of pros to having a golden too, but that is in my opinion the biggest con to having a golden- all the fawning and people losing their filters over him lol. I haven’t gotten people assuming they know how to handle him better than me or get the comments that are like “oh but he wants to be pet” luckily. But I think it may also be because I tend to ignore people and all their unsolicited comments unless if it’s detrimental to Atlas’ job or if it’s a good moment to educate. Where I live, if you respond back to a comment a person made, they’ll rope you into an hour long conversation. So I’ve just learned to ignore because otherwise I quite literally would never be able to get anything done! Thank you for your comment and your question! I say this all the time, it must be so hard for Golden handlers! People just can’t seem to contain themselves around Goldens, it must be exhausting. When I chose a Rottweiler I knew that his breed could be negative for some people, but it can also mean at least they won’t ask to pet. 😂 We feel like a walking free petting zoo as it is, I’m sure it’s far worse for you guys! Hang in there.🐾
@@atyourservicedog Yes! "Walking Petting Zoo" is the term that fits best. What I found, that works for me, is strong eye contact, a step between them and my Golden, and (in a deep stern voice) "PLEASE DON'T"...and then maintain the eye contact.
I would say that what I experience is worse than other people with SDs in any way. It's equally bad for all of us. I don't mind people addressing me about my dog, I try to draw a distinction between that and people oogling him to get his attention.
@@Broney-tw3vy I totally agree! You can just tell right away when someone is about to or thinking about trying to distract or pet them. I say leave it super loudly and sternly, not to Atlas, but to them 🤣 they just think I’m talking to Atlas- who really doesn’t even notice most people lol- and that usually does the trick to keep them from approaching further. Honestly those patches that I’ve seen that say “I’m not here for your entertainment” hits home. People just don’t understand how much of a spectacle and how much of a walking petting zoo it makes us feel like when we’re just trying to run some dang errands. I don’t know what it is about goldens that make people go more bananas over a dog than usual 😂 😩

Thank you for your video and sharing yourself, your pup and the training. I am only just beginning the journey. I'm 74 yo and my maltipoo is about 2. She is a rescue, got her when she was 4 mos old and didn't know about service dogs then, otherwise would have gotten a much bigger dog. But she is mine and here. Obviously she will not serve in all aspects but we'll make it work. Your struggles to get through so you can get out in public with your dog, even just to train, are so relatable. I am so impressed with both you and Atlas. It gives me hope.

This help a lot. I want to learn to train my own pup. So my son can have service dog for the deaf. And yes there are service dogs that help with deaf people if they don't need it. But mine so
Service dogs are awesome! Be aware that not all dogs have what it takes to learn tasking and do it reliably. 80% of dogs that go through training dont pass. So if your pup doesnt show an interest in learning dont force it.

Omg violate he did amazing new subscriber btw to be able to have his full focus of lead is amazing personally because he is still in training and could be distracted by people and dogs distracting him i would consider a pull strap. As in ituations where people are talking to him and u dont have his full attention u could hold the pull strap . it works for my dog but all dogs are different Xx

My Sd is washed but I still train him like sd because he got task and a job to do( I only bring him pet friendly places) and people are always amazed my his training or I had someone just recently say look at that dog she also had a dog lucky it wasn’t reactive and watching Sd videos let me reminisce

where’s your vest from ? i have a sdit who is also a golden and i’ve been looking into bests that i can attach patches to bc people keep petting her when she wears her “cuter” more minimalistic vest w only 2 small patch spots 😭 also you’re doing great, i’m the same way training my pup and i’m new to dogs (i’ve had a small dog but i was a kid when he was a puppy) so this vid helps. i get super hyper vigilant in public so training can be hard and i feel like i’m not the best handler bc of how sometimes i can’t focus training esp with people :,)
His vest is a one Tigris Apollo one small (short back) vest- the “large” option is a long back version of it. I got it from Amazon, but one Tigris also has their own website too. Just search one Tigris Apollo one dog vest on Amazon and it should pop up. His patches are also all from Amazon too- they’re inexpensive and have lasted well! I can’t afford a whole lot so Amazon is where I get most of my dog gear. I wanted to have Atlas wear gear that made it extremely straightforward for the public. I find reds do best for the public cause red means stop for most and it’s eye catching. I hope that helps!
Also I feel that! I too get very hyper vigilant- it’s part of my disability unfortunately- so it’s definitely taken some time to get more comfortable training in public. I will say training your own service dog definitely makes things worse before it starts to get better and they can help with that instead of contributing! Although I will say I’m hyper vigilant in a different sense now in that I’m hyper vigilant to make sure nobody is going to mess with him or bring other dogs up to him. So I definitely feel you when it comes to not feeling like the best handler because of it. But hey what matters is that you continue training and you take breaks when needed!✨❤️🦮

The vest in this video is a one Tigris Apollo one short vest! You can get it from Amazon or you can go to the one Tigris website to take a look at all their gear. They have some great stuff for working pups, all really sturdy for inexpensive prices. The Apollo vest is also great for growing pups cause of how much it’s able to adjust and it can convert into a cape to attach to harness if that’s what you need as well! All his patches I got off Amazon as well! 🫶🏼
What is the best age to train them
It depends on when you get your dog, but I would say let that first week of being home mainly about solidifying your bond. The sooner you start training with a dog/puppy the better. So I would say pretty much immediately, but only starting with basic obedience and going slow and steady. Make sure to make everything positive for them and have patience! Every dog learns at their own pace, but slow and steady is always best. You don’t want to overwhelm them or have them feel that training and working for you is a negative thing. This answer can also depend on many other things, but to just cut to the chase, the sooner you start training the better. But don’t just immediately jump into going into public spaces. You have to work up to that, starting at home, and making sure their solid on basics at each stage of the process before raising the steaks and going into public. It can take months to work up to being able to go into public spaces with your service dog in training. It’s all normal and all a part of the process. Hope that all makes sense!
