I have a club that destroys balls already it’s called thinning a 5 iron
When square grooves were legal, I had a Sand Wedge with a copper insert that felt like sand paper. It would shred the cover off a Titleist like it was peeling an onion!! I would have pieces of the ball's cover stuck in the groves. You could stop the ball on a "dime"...but...you couldn't use the ball afterwards! I took it out of my bag after 1 round...it was costing me too much money in golf balls!
Back in the day, scuffs like those were very common and if you thinned it, you had a cut in the middle of the ball. Just shows how spoiled we are now with the enhanced durability of golf balls.

Some years ago, I had a set of Dynacraft Prophet Tour irons which had such sharp grooves they ruined balls immediately, to such an extent I had to get rid of them, although they were otherwise good clubs (and legal)
My old wedges did that when I'd been at them with the Hymec Groove Tool.
Awesome for short chips, great control with them...box grooves were awesome but Pros with their clubhead speed could hit it anywhere and get control out of the deepest rough with them.
I saw Phil (micced up) talking to Sergio about how he got so much spin..."I don't back my grooves off Sergio, just leave them sharp"

Seen a few Smithworks wedge videos now, and it got me tinkering with some old Cleveland ones in my garage. Gonna test them out tomorrow morning with their sharpened grooves. Fingers crossed for similar results!
Saw these advertised and and a few mates and I bought one for fun. It cost 120 +post and it is an absolute ball destroyer but great fun. The reaction on golfers faces when we use it is so funny, (not in comp...). Great fun and a great video, well done....

Got one of these during lockdown but the conforming version, its hreat but the face of club scuffs easy as does the back, not lasted as long as my sm8s which I've had for over a year
Got 3 of the conforming ones in the bag. Love em. 👍🏼

I used to use tiger shark golf clubs they used to eat golf balls for fun! My balls used to look like Sputnik after a round. These clubs from smithwork are just for fun but wow

Bought a set Titleist irons with u grooves in the late 80s went through 3 to 4 balls a round ripping the cover off ,

I bought the 48,50,54,58. Had them bent to 44,49,54,59. I love playing with them, don't care if there illegal. I play for fun.

I once asked a ball Rat what a "reconditioned" ball was... 'a ball soaked in bleach", the White is paint, which is why the wedge strips it.
I got "lace" after sharpening my 64 lob a few years back.
You could do this to a Legal wedge if you spent time with a groove sharpening tool...

Another good video on this Wedge or golf ball destroyer. You certainly generated an enormous amount of backspin but I can certainly understand why they are illegal. In response to your question, I would not want to own one.

That is the "extreme" version, which has not actually been submitted to the R&A/USGA for professional play. So that alone makes them illegal for sanctioned tournament play.
Pretty obvious that the grooves are shear sided (too sharp) and very deep, so they will never meet the groove rule for wedges.
Smithworks makes two other models, that are tournament legal and still produce a crap ton of spin, but have conforming Vee grooves that don't chew the cover off the ball.

Liam you have got to try the Dunlop NZ9 wedge cost £10 on ebay , if you think that wedge spins then you have to try these I dare you, if you can't get hold of I have 5 you won't believe them plus its legal
Tigar woods does home work on is wedges in is garage deepens the groves
The Dunlop nz9 wedges do the same. The big difference is they are only 15 quid a wedge and it's legal.
