- Former president Barack Obama has just released “A Promised Land,” the first volume of a memoir chronicling his presidency. On Monday, Nov. 23, Obama will sit down with Washington Post opinions columnist Michele Norris and Mellon Foundation President Elizabeth Alexander for an in-depth, live interview. As early readers of his manuscript, Norris and Alexander will ask Obama to share his approach to writing and the cultural and literary influences in his life. They will also discuss the impact of his historic presidency and how he views the country today.

I appreciate those "uh" pauses more than ever. It means he's thinking before he speaks. It's a refreshing quality.
Those "uh" pauses are called "vocalized pauses" and when I was in Air Force ROTC at the University of Illinois, each and every one of them was counted against your grade!
You can see it in his face whenever he does it as well. You look at his face, and see the gears turning. Just him choosing his words very carefully.
When vocalizing an idea, using an "uh" or "um" is greatly unfavored as they screw up the flow and show a sign of low preparation. Obama is a great speaker regardless, but using filler words like that should be discouraged, since they are not good practices to pick up.
@@triplethreatcga2358 It's an interview, not an official speech. Even though the questions have been anticipated prior to the talk (and I'm not sure of this) it's a good thing that he's reasoning and constructing a logic before answering. Don't you think so?

Amazing writer & great interview questions. Read POTUS all 3 books and A Promised Land allows me to experience the intricate, complex work of a President (prior, during & even after) as if you’re right beside him throughout the story.
He modeled James Baldwin’s “Fire Next Time” in brevity and depth explaining today’s issues. I’m moved by the way Pres. Obama shared his insight even flaws with humility & authenticity.
He is one of my last favourite American President from George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, J F Kennedy and last but not least Loving one is Brack Obama. Ok. Really, I Love him! A Love 💕 from India Chhattisgarh Bilaspur. All the best!
