- In Episode 1 of our new series Helping You Make Wood Work®, fine furniture maker Chad Stanton walks us through the 4 rules of good design with both good and bad examples of pieces he has made in the past. He talks about building with plans, and how to figure out your own plans if you only have a photo and creating new designs from scratch.
Using an occasional table he is building, Chad will take us through all the steps of designing a piece, tweaking the design, deciding on materials and hardware.
Future episodes include preparing your materials, a deep dive into what joinery to use, when and how to make it, sanding, finishing tips and techniques, and much more!
Be sure to like, subscribe, and let us know what you want to see in future episodes.

The Bob Ross of woodworking, god bless your heart brother!
Woodcraft folks, thanks for sponsoring this series. Chad is a wonderful teacher and his experience and practical knowledge is a wealth of good information. I'm looking forward to this series as I've been wanting to move more into the design of my own pieces instead of just reproducing other people's plans for my projects.
Thank you Hal. Good luck with your own new designs, we look forward to seeing your woodworking projects. Thanks for following us.
Thank you Woodcraft for starring Chad Stanton, I love his fresh and humurous way of teaching!
Look for episode, part 2 with Chad, coming very soon.
Great video. Look forward to the rest of the series.
Wonderful Chad. Thank you! Mike in the Uk
Great Video Chad! We will be showing it in our store, Woodcraft of Columbus!
I’d love a tutorial on that bench🤩🤩🤩
I am really looking forward to this series. Thanks for doing this Woodcraft and Chad.
We'll be heading back up to the Wood Choppin' Time shop in September to capture episodes 3 & 4.
Wonderful video! I learned a lot.
Throughly enjoyed this video. Just the right length of time and extremely, for me, informative. Keep 'em coming.
Love the video Chad! Thank you so much !!!
AWESOME! Excellent introduction to the new series, Chad! Great information for the novice and even better reminders for those who need "refreshers." Looking forward to the entire series!
Thanks Carroll for your support and all you do for Woodcraft...and Chad too!
Very nice video. Clear, concise, professional and a joy to watch. I hope Woodcraft continues to sponsor Chad's videos.
Thanks! We love working with Chad and hope to make many more videos with him.
OUTSTANDING! This is an excellent start to your new series. Chad did a fantastic job explaining the basics on designing furniture. I’m anxiously waiting for the future episodes. Thanks.
Thank you Don. Look for the second in this series to be released sometime in August/September 2019 time frame. We will be heading back to Chad's shop the second week of September for video shoot's 3 & 4.
Woodcraft super. I’m looking forward to it. BTW -- Your filming crew did a great job on this episode. Actually filming in Chad’s new shop was a good idea.
@@wb_finewoodworking Yes, on sight at each woodworker's shop lends to authenticity and a personal connection to the individual woodworker. This was ALL Chad, there is no teleprompter, no written lines. Chad is amazing at conveying his style with great communication, flow and ease on the fly! Although we do have some funny outtakes! Chad is the real deal at both educating and woodworking, along with an amazing connection to the history of hand tools.
@@wb_finewoodworking Thanks, Don. This project filming was a combination effort by our Woodcraft social media team, Kyle Crabtree, Kevin Reed and myself (Frank Byers). All the edits were done by Kevin.
Really liked the video and can’t wait till the next one!
Thank you Chad and Woodcraft! You guys all did an amazing job on this video and it was packed full of information. Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you sir, we appreciate your kind response.
Very enjoyable Chad. Great info. It would be great if Woodcraft extended this series beyond 4 episodes. Keep up the good work. BTW, although I do miss Safety Dan, I'm glad they don't have you dancing at the end. (I couldn't resist).
That's the plan with Chad! And perhaps with some addition woodworkers as well.
Wonderful video. Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge with us.
That's what we try to do, and carry on the woodworking tradition. We hope you'll be inspired to do the same!
I'm making my own small vintage cabinet with drawers but it's taken me months and still I have so much work to do
I lack the proper tools and machines to do it easily, correctly and fast. It's a nightmare, I felt like giving up several times
Very nice video on furniture design . I still have one of my first and still favorite books written by Norm, measure twice cut once.
Thanks for commenting, where may we see a photo of your first piece and/or woodworking talents?
@@WoodcraftSupply my first is long gone from shop class 1971 spice rack. Done in the Krenov style with hints of Broque but some thought it was more in the style of Bauhaus. Got a solid C on it ,Mr Estes/shop teacher said it was interesting. #winning
Just great! Packed with relevant information but not a word to much. Tnx a lot!
Thank you for the feedback!
What do you recommend, I want to become a talented furniture worker from Ethiopia 🇪🇹
Was this filmed in the new shop, Chad? Good luck with the new series!
Yes it was filmed at Chad's new Woodchoppintime Shop, in Toledo Ohio.
Hi, just wondering What is the course to pursue furniture design? Thank u.
Good video. My clients seem to always show me a photo from Pinterest.
I agree. That is my number one way customers find ideas they want for their home.
Woodglut has a very large project base.
