Personally I wear slippers or socks indoors and take shoes off when I come in from outside. When I was a kid I went barefoot indoors and outdoors but I no longer like it much. I like not wearing shoes and just slippers or socks though. I LOVE your kitchen island, it makes perfect sense as it offers the storage to the food prep and eating surface. Genius! I used to love to go barefoot also but ended up getting a parasite from some stray cats that I was feeding. The parasite entered my bare feet. So I always wear shoes now. Just a little warning for people that may have some strays they take care of.
