How to Edit RAW Photos in Affinity Photo | Develop Persona for Beginners

  • In this Affinity Photo tutorial for beginners, I show you how to edit RAW photos from start to finish using the Develop Persona - which is the "workspace" Affinity Photo uses for developing or editing RAW images. You can edit a variety of supported RAW image formats, which are better than JPEG because they come out of the camera with almost no compression and therefor can recover much more data from your image. By editing RAW files, you'll get amazing looking images that contain less noise and have more balanced lighting.
    I walk through each step in the RAW photo editing process in a way that's easy for beginner photo editors to understand. By the end of this tutorial, you should have a firm understanding of how each panel in the Develop Persona works, and how certain edits (i.e. Curves, White Balance, Shadows-Highlights, Saturation, Vibrance, Noise Reduction, and more) effect the overall look, feel, and tone of your image.

    This video includes one of the BEST explanations of the curves panel I've ever seen. I've watched many "how to" tutorials, but that curves section was detailed in exactly the right way to finally make me understand how red/blue/green curves are used in editing. Thanks!

    Only recently started looking at Affinity and was unsure how functionaly rich it was compared to the Adobe products. After watching this tutorial I am now convinced that Affinity is the right way to go whilst having a much more user friendly interface and as much functionality than the others. Thank you very much, and am now subscribed with notifications on. Cheers !

      I do not think I have seen any tutorial about the Develop settings with a clear explanation of what the specific tools do. As far as I can tell, this is the only one. I discovered plenty of new tools that I had never used before. Kudos!

    I have been using Affinity Photo since it’s launch and have viewed some excellent tutorials from great presenters.
    The clear explanation of each tool will improve my developing procedures many of which reduce the editing required in Photo Persona.

    Absolutely great video, thanks for going into detail about the tools. I've really been having such a hard time with editing my photos. One question I have starting with a raw photo in Affinity Develop Persona, in the "Develop Assistant" would you change any of those settings. Specifically would you select "Take no action" for the noise reduction, tone curve, or exposure bias? Thanks for you time.

    Excellent video!!! I am very new to affinity and never used photoshop. You explained things very well. I am still confused about saving photos and exporting photos. When I followed your save example my photo went back to the folder it came from. I understand that but what if I want to save it in another file folder of just affinity edits that I can go straight to instead of hunting in the folder it came from. Hope I made myself clear.

    Are the clipped mid tones always in the darker part of the image or were they just in this example. I'm new to editing raw photos and the clipped tones are something I never seem to be able to correct. The clipped highlights and blacks are obvious, but the clipped tones are confusing.

  • @M123OCT
    @M123OCT 8 місяців тому

    Two quick things: even just having the split screen on while you edit is a great idea. 👍
    And secondly, minor point - how did you get the icons on the overlays tab to be in colour? I'm sure mine are black and white.
    Good video, cheers. 👍

    I am looking how to do a workflow from scratch in Affinity Photo as I have pulled out of Adobe CC monmths ago. I found this video to be of great interest but will have to watch it a few times as it was too fast for me. I am 77 years of age so I am at an age now where new tricks are learned slowly.

    "Develop Persona"
    Oh, cool. I haven't opened any RAW images in Affinity Photo yet. I had a Fuji X-T30 and was playing around with a pirated copy of Capture One. It's crazy how this app replaces Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom for $50. It'll serve me well to learn this program inside and out.
