Actually George Alagiah has that particular crown with a programme called GMT the previous day on the BBC News Channel. She IS the first to broadcast on BBC One from it though. :-)

GMT moved to BH back in January and it aired on BBC World News only, not on the News Channel. Mind you I think Newsnight and the Andrew Marr show has been there since November.
IMO, the countdown is lazy broadcasting. It gives them a 90 second cushion to cut into the start of the program rather than just going to air bang on time. And I know it's now iconic of the BBC News but I'm just not a fan.
