I was 15 in 1972. I played guitar. When I first saw John and Larry live in 1972. (not together)I could not believe my eyes and ears. I did not think they were from this planet. I tried to get people to listen to them, but everyone hated them (no singing). These 2 were absolute Genius, marvels for that time.
The look that Coryell gives McLaughlin at 1:16 is my favorite part. He's digging it so much. I missed when Coryell came to town with the original 11th house a few years ago, and I deeply regret it, moreso now, hearing that he has passed.
love it when there are almost 30000 views and no one dislikes it. how could you possibly dislike such an absolute beauty anyway? there is a very interesting and beautiful recent rendition of this song of john playing it with zakir hussain and jean luc ponty that's worthy of being seen at least a thousand times
...I love in the ..first solo..how magically..mystically..out..John gets in his exotic scalar expression....this version is actually up there with the best renditions
composition is not on paper.... the shape is inside performing, not just playing. you cannot have mclaughlin composition outside his playing, so i don't understand your point that i consider not in argument
...hey dude..I have encountered that over my decades of playing...it’s an..old..old timers jazz thing..with chips on shoulders....jazz guys have been playing nylon strung gyros for ages..now it’s hybrid plectrum..fingerstyle.. everything goes...John mac..1980’ ..reg neck..straight classicalgtr...with plectrum alt picking.. see..y.tube..with Pavo..Australian t.v. sounds..t.v. music program...passion grace and fire ..era. 1980’s...
..with Pavo..de Lucia...John on reg classical..with plectrum...playing everything...sounds to.v show..j.mac..with Pavo...1980’s..live in t.v studio.....you can play jazz to the stratosphere..with a standard classical guitar...using just pick..j.mac...or fingerstyle..ie. b.powell..c.byrd..all of the other famous ..Latin jazz guitarist..bola sepia..for ex...also I have seen..al Di meaola..play with a reg classicalgtr..and a pick..fluent..beautiful
i hope you've gotten over your michaelangelo phase somewhere in the last 8 months ... not that his music can cater to a developing music taste for that long but ... for your sake i hope it didn't ...
He was so young - and he was already a thousand miles ahead what the new generation is doing ... fantastic!!! No one can beat Mclauhglin!!!
A sad yet extremely beautiful song, one of my all time favourites from John McLaughlin. Truly one of the greatest musicians of our time.

Great clip... it's not every day the you get to see John McLaughlin perform in his boxer shorts.

Here (I think) is that version with John, Zakir, & Jean Luc you mentioned: ua-cam.com/video/ADY4lpC4co0/v-deo.html

@shetalkscrazytalk84 Have to agree, he's in a class of his own.
For me the great thing about JML are his compositions, his playing is great but secondary to that.

I think underneath this video it should say "no description necessary" instead
these are the after tennis jams
@markatier They were. They are. For any time. :)
Guitar professor wouldn't let me use my classical guitar for jazz. Said it was a totally different instrument. He had issues.
