Picador Disc Sander Restoration Part 1

- Welcome back to another video! This time I'm restoring a Picador disc sander, that I snagged from ebay for peanuts. When I went to pick it up the owner told me it had been sat outside for quite some time, and I know that the area he lives in floods quite often so I wasn't expecting this one to be in great condition.
After doing some research on this, I can't find any evidence of Picador ever selling a fully assembled Disc Sander. The Picador parts on this unit were sold separately as a kit for hobby machinists and you either attached them to a drill or a motor. Picador sold all sorts of cast aluminium kits from lathes to table saws, but none of them had motors. The base, motor and wiring have all been put together by a previous owner to make this into a nice free standing unit, the base weighs a ton! It's hard to put a date on this kit, Picador sold them from around the late 30s onwards from what I've seen so this could have been put together anytime really. The motor and electrical parts, except the main cable are also pretty old so I'm presuming it wasn't made too recently.
I decided to start the restoration with just the original Picador parts, get them looking lovely then see what I can do with the base and motor. The electrics are pretty much hammered and as I intend to use this frequently in my workshop I think I'm going to update the isolator just to be on the safe side. Anyway, that's all for part 2 of this video which will be uploaded very soon!

England invented the IMPERIAL system, can't believe you don't have a set of wrenches. I have both, only because we import a lot of metric stuff. I can, and have used both systems, but will resist going full metric 'til the day I die. LOL Very nice work so far.

I’d not really seen much of there’s other than a saw before I did some research about this, they made loads of interesting kits! Might see if I can find a few other bits to bolt into the side of this and take advantage of the extra pulley 😉
My horizontal polisher and chuck is made by them, there's often some bits and pieces on Ebay by them 👍
@@sparesorrepair9118 There is an unused "in-box" picador belt sander for sale near me. Unfortunately not close enough to collect at the moment. Makes me want to cry : )

@@danceswithaardvarks3284 If you look at my video number 57 you can see the one I have, I got it about 10years ago, I think it did have bronze bearings which got smoking hot (even though I oil soaked them) so I replaced them with a modern set, I'm on my third motor, this one is sealed metal dust killed the others,
It might be worth sending the owner of the above belt sander a message and pick it up after all this has died down 🤔
Try peanut butter on glue in the future. Just rub the peanut on the glue and it will ball up in clumps. One the glue is off the surface, dish soap will clean off the peanut butter oils.

I wonder if black and decker/dewalt used the picador pattern for their mitre guide, because it looks almost identical to the ones that come with their band saw. Interesting idea of using two of them for a tilting table; I have picked up a few spares at car boot sales.
Also found a belt driven picador arbor polisher/wire brush for £1 at a car boot. Installed new bronze bearings and always planned to restore it, but it is in use too much.
Can't wait for the motor restoration.

Might be needing a new power cord :-) The parts you have done so far have come out very nice, especially the polished ones. What degreaser and rust remover do you use?
vondeliusc I’ve never seen a cable just fall apart like this one, totally rotten! Rust remover is MC51 and degreaser is just screw fix own brand, works really well.

Kevin Hookham bought it from eBay, when I got there to pick it up the guy told me it had been down the side of his garage for years n a black bag 🤦♂️. I’ve got a set of sockets but couldn’t fit them down under the motor, ordered a set of spanner’s for re assembly 👍

I noticed your your black & decker was/is a bench grinder. Did you convert it to take a wire brush & polishing wheel? If so how did you do this please?
It came with a wire wheel on it, the polishing wheel kits come with different size attachments for different size grinders, think it was £30 for both side mounts, 2 grades of polishing wheel and the cutting pastes from eBay. The grinder was restored in a previous video, it was a right mess to start with!

"I really need some Imperial spanners." Don't look now but the fasteners you're struggling with may be BA hardware and not imperial. The UK has more different threading systems than anyone else I can think of.
Wait, people in other parts of the world don’t have SAE wrenches and sockets as part of a basic tool kit?
Logan Terry I have a full set of sockets, but couldn’t get a socket/ratchet underneath the motor! Until recently I’ve always just got by using adjustable for the odd Whitworth bolt I come across but I’ve ordered a set of spanners for re assembly, don’t want to scratch my new paint 😂

Imperial spanners ? Why not just get a couple of GOOD adjustable ones ? (NOT cheap Chinese ones made from cheese)
