5-stars...Excellent video! I recently replaced both head gaskets that were failing on Kohler's V-twin SV725 (24hp) Courage engine powering my Husqvarna riding mower. 9-year-old mower (looks like new) only 210 hours, but recently noticed hiss sound @ shut-down (tell-tale sign of failing head gaskets). Before I attempted repair myself, I watched a couple UA-cam videos on this...but Mustang Mowers video on this repair is the only one you need to watch and it's the BEST! Clear, on-point, concise and super-informative. Great job and thanks for all the intel.
Good video with great info on why you have to keep these babies clean. I replaced the head gasket on the one I bought used and it was completely plugged! Good to know it requires this kind of maintenance. I'm hoping that having stopped the oil leaks from the valve covers I can keep it clean by blowing or washing out the space without having to tear off all the sheet metal baffles--a real pain on my Cub. Oil in the grass and dirt makes it almost impossible to blow out with compressed air.
I just bought a used zero turn mower for $500. I found an engine maintenance kit at Atwoods for $60. It comes with oil, spark plugs, fuel filter, oil filter, and air filter. I'll also get some Simple Green and a brush to clean it after seeing this.
Yup and I would’ve pulled the entire engine and installed an entire gasket kit. A little extra expense for the customer but a lot of piece of mind. Especially since all these older V twin engines are known for this issue.
Mine blew out at 130 hours. Replaced with OEM gaskets , same as I took off. lasted until 332 hours. Emailed Kohler and asked them if they had an improved gaskets yet. Said I didn’t feel I should have to buy parts again for such crappy gaskets. They sent me a set of the new style gaskets , no charge. These gaskets with a flame ring around the cylinder hole should last the life of the engine.
Those sheet metal valve covers that leak doesn't help anything. I'm changing out a 25hp Kohler command for a 26hp Kohler 7000. I've already noticed dirt and trash like you have on that one on the 7000. When I get it in and running, I'll probably go with the plastic valve covers with the o ring gasket and pressure wash the crap out of it. I really wish I could have found a good used command to replace my blown one with. Do you have any advice on wiring between the two? Will my old wiring harness fit the 7000 series motor? Do you know what all will innerchange between the two, so I don't throw good stuff away? I'm pretty sure the PTO clutch is the same, but are the coils, stator, flywheel, starter or even the carb? The carb set up is completely different. I wish I could retrofit the command carb onto the 7000 series. Even the dipstick seems cheap on it.
Thank you for this, very helpful. I think I have the same issue on the same cylinder. Should I do both gaskets at once, or just save the other for another day?
You have to pull the shroud off and remove the intake to get to one, you may as well do both at the same time so you don't have to tear into again down the road. It's personal preference really, but if it were my machine, I would go ahead and do both.
@MustangMowers I pulled off both, they were just on there with rtv. I ordered some aluminum covers as they were same price as composite covers. I heard they are a bit more reliable
this is a great video man and will help me a lot. I'm having an issue where when i try to turn it over, it sounds like its trying hard to do so then suddenly dies, and air of some sort escapes out the right side near the spark plug. its like a hissing decompression sound that lasts a second or so. i replaced the spark plugs that were very black. Air filter is clean. Gas was in there all winter, but i ran it for 5 minutes 2 weeks ago and it seemed fine. Oil needs to be replaced badly as thats something ive neglected. i fear its a head gasket. do you have any ideas?
If you can hear air hissing out by the spark plug, that's pretty tell tale that the head gasket is bad or something much more sinister has happened. I would check compression on both cylinders to confirm that. If the fuel that was in it all winter has any ethanol in it, that could be part of your problem as well. Ethanol is bad stuff and does not do well sitting for any length of time. Hope this helps.
@@MustangMowers Thank you so much for the reply man, i greatly appreciate it. I'll start with a compression test and work my way from there! And yes, im fairly certain my gas has ethanol in it. The engine sat for maybe 1 1/2 or 2 months without being ran i'd reckon. Never had a problem before like that but i usually put in some sea foam, and i think i neglected that this year.
We use a gasket scraper to clean off all the mating surface. If you have any stubborn spots, you can use something a little more abrasive, but, be careful not to take off to much of the surface. Then right before I put RTV on, I use a rag and some solvent (carb cleaner, brake parts cleaner, etc) and make sure all the oils and stuff are removed from the gasket surface.
Great video. Informative and interesting. I have the same Kohler 7000 engine . There is oil leaking from the valve cover area. I wonder if the head gasket is blown?
@@edthompson1727 There are a lot of reasons for it to shut off when you kick the PTO on. It sounds like you just have a leaky valve cover. Just like in the video, if you leave small problems long enough, they will become big problems. Valve covers are easy to reseal. Just get some high temp RTV and pull the valve cover off (should be 4 bolts) clean the mating surface real good, apply the RTV, let it tack up (about 10 minutes) then put the valve cover back on.
If you have the silver tin valve covers on your 7000, it is most likely the gasket vs high heat issue issue. I don't have the courage series engine but I recently purchase a gently used zero turn with the Kohler 7000 professional. The seller replaced one of the valve covers with a newly designed Kohler cover (black color with o ring gasket ). He told me the high heat, especially from the exhaust, causes gasket problems and warping of the old silver covers, and oil leaks. He didn't do the other side because Kohler sent him the wrong valve cover for the right side. It didn't have the pulse pump valve hole on the right side (top) of the cover. Also, I noticed he added gasket sealant to the new style valve cover. This is not necessary on the new covers, because the gasket used doesn't need sealant. The heat was still melting the sealant he used. I located the correct Kohler valve cover kit, with two valve covers (one has the pulse pump hole on the right side (top), next to the V on the OHV stamp, valve cover gaskets. It also came with two deflector/heat shields, that sit between the new valve covers and the exhaust below. The exhaust is the the culprit of this issue. I replaced both valve covers and torqued to spec. I didn't added seleant, I just lightly greased the new o ring style gasket. No more heat or oil leak issues. The kit I used was Kohler 3275549S. It contains everything needed, for both sides. I purchased it from SEPW online at a very reasonable price.
@philliphall5198 I don't disagree with you. It is, however, up to the customer and what they are willing to pay for. I do prefer to do both sides and if this were my equipment, I would have.
@@MustangMowers please do you think is possible can you share the item for gasket head by 24 hp Kohler engine series 7000 . please I will be grateful! Thanks
It really depends on the shop labor rate. Our shop charges $90/hour and I'm told that's cheap. You can bet on a solid 2 hours on this if you do both sides and don't run into any issues.
I’m finding oil on top of my intake manifold. Specifically between the two high points. Could that be a gasket as well or does the intake manifold need to be replaced?

Hey I have a question how do I find the torque specs for my Kohler engine I have a PS ECV 740-3019and I have a 797 Kawasaki FX 730v engine I need the torque specs for the engine
I don’t have a torque wrench that measure in. lbs. only in ft lbs. my question is, first torque would be about 16ft lbs and next tighten down would be around 30 ft lbs. should I just get close to that?
At the end of the day, as long as you're close I think it will be fine. To quote Taryl "it's not a spaceship, it's a lawn mower." Nothing has to be exact. When you get the valve lashing set right, tighten the retainers down enough they don't come loose. But, if you do the way I showed in the video, the lashing doesn't change so you don't have to reset them.
Im about to swap my head gaskets out and i noticed the new gaskets have 2 rubber rings in each package. Anyone know what those are for cause the heat would melt them quickly so im at a loss here
Nice video but you take the tourque stuff a little to serious lol, I'm a small engine mechanic at a shop and I change them all the time you don't need a tourque wrench just snug each bolt up nice and tight. It really was a poor design. But, Kohler has done a good job, in my opinion, with the fix on replacement parts.
