    In this video I install new garage door cables after one of them broke. This is an easy process, just follow the steps. FYI, rebar can be used as the bars to unwind the garage door springs.

    One of the best, simplistic video’s on repairing a garage door. Follow along and have no issues fixing or replacing overhead door cables. Well done!

    You only need to take a short amount of tension off the main lifting spring about 3-4”. Leave one of the tension rods in the slot and let it rest against the closed garage door. That way you don’t have to completely in mind and rewind the springs which can be very dangerous!

    A good instructional video with the exception of a couple of things. First, and foremost, was having your body and face in direct alignment with the winding rods. People performing this DIY task need to keep off to the right or left (depending on right or left handed) to prevent a possible slip of that rod into their face, which could be catastrophic. Especially when doing this repair alone with no one around. The next would be having an additional lighting source for those areas where it's really much too dark to see what's really going on, or what's getting attached to what.
    All in all, a fairly decent fix-it-video for those that require assistance getting their broken/worn garage door torsion system cables changed out.

    Great video! Just replaced both cables and installed a new opener thanks to you. Appreciate it!

    You had your head, face and body directly in line with the winding rods. A slip could have severely injured or killed you. Best to position yourself slightly to the side so a slipped winding bar wouldn't impact you. Otherwise excellent.

    Just wanted to say thanks for getting back to me so I came back and looked realized I didn’t subscribe. I’m all subbed buddy. Thanks again. I’m getting all my tools and lights and jumping on the cable job now. I couldn’t get a kit anywhere. I did a few over the years and even homo depo had kits with cables all made up. I got stuck buying enough cable and ends to make them up. That Covid plandemic really screwed things up for most everything. Peace 👍✌️🇺🇸

      Anonymous I have my garage door half open since beginning of summer. I fixed a different one few years back but nobody has the kits with the exact cable length so I bought a roll of cable and ends and know it’s gonna be a big problem getting it fixed right. Watched a few videos but not really the info I’m looking for. But this guy was good at showing what to do. I’m going to take the good side off and measure it then make two new ones. That plandemic really screwed up the whole economy. Government is getting really good at fucking up the hard working,good honest tax paying people of this country. We pay the most taxes to run this country and yet we are the ones that take the punishment for all the problems every one else creates. Getting sick of them. I will never send another penny to a lying begging politician again. Peace I’m out of here.

    Dude for residential garage doors there's no need to unwind the springs to replace cables all you need to do is back wind a couple turns to get some slack on the cables and leave the bar in the spring while you replace cables. And always clamp the garage door down while working on it this way you won't get knocked off the ladder if the door decides to pop up
    To get the cable length measure from the floor to the center of the spring shaft.

      TinMan....Does this work when only one cable snaps (as in this video)? If so, do you back wind "both" springs or only single spring (which one ?) to get slack on both cable pullies to install both new cables?

    • @TinManKustoms
      @TinManKustoms 5 місяців тому

      @smlee7348 depending on the size of the springs. You can usually backwind both the springs at the same time which will allow the door to settle down to the floor again. If it feels to hard to back wind both springs at the same time then bar one out and back wind one. Just make sure the barred out springs grub screws are not in contact with the shaft and the shaft moves freely. You can usually do this when changing broken cable or both cables

    The replacement cable, was it already the correct size? So if I get a replacement from big box store it will have the loop and the end clips already attached? Thanks!

      Yes it should already be made the correct size. I purchased mine from a local garage door installation company. Just keep the old one for size reference

    I know it’s an old video but can the cables be replaced with the door down and not reducing tension on springs?

    • @HowtoHacks
      @HowtoHacks  Рік тому

      I wouldn’t recommend it because the cable is what keeps the springs from unwinding. It would be dangerous to try as you would have to hold the springs under tension while changing the cable.

    So I had to put my roller back in the track and in the process the cable came unwound on one side. Since the cable on one side is fine but the other side needs to be put back on, would you undo the opener and attach the cable with door down or try winding the cable and doing it that way. I tried winding it and reattaching it did not work lol. Thanks in advance for the help!

    • @HowtoHacks
      @HowtoHacks  Рік тому

      The cable needs to be installed with the door down. The opener should be undone and unplugged as you definitely don’t want anyone pressing the button until it’s fixed. You probably need to completely unwind both springs incase things got lopsided. This is what I did in the video. You said you tried winding and then reattaching the cable? It’s actually the other way around. The cables are installed first and then the springs are wound.

  • @johnsellers9623

    How did you know it was loose 7 turns each side. Did you use the bars to loosen them 7 turns on each side before you started? Thank you. I have a broken cable and I have to make a cable because nobody has the right size or length of cable I need so I’m gonna make one to fit.

    • @HowtoHacks

    How did you know how many wounds to do?

    • @HowtoHacks
      @HowtoHacks  2 роки тому

      That is how many there was to begin with. As you unwind the springs you can count. Also newer garage door springs have a line on them so when the spring is unwound the line will be straight. This means you can count the wraps of the painted line as well.

      @@HowtoHacks Assuming that is a 7 foot door and the cable drums are 4 ", the drums wind up 1 foot of cable per turn. So they have to turn 7 times to open the door. So you wind the springs 7 turns, or 28 quarter turns with the winding rods. Then 2 or 3 more quarter turns.

    Do you remember what size rods you needed to unwind the spring? And if all garage doors require the same size rods?

    • @HowtoHacks
      @HowtoHacks  Рік тому

      Those rods were homemade. Rebar or any other solid metal bar that fits in the holes will work. I think they are about 18 inches long.

      Ended up having a door guy come out and do it. It wasn't for my personal house, and only took him about 20 minutes to replace both sides, only about $95. He told me a story about some guys that tried to do it themselves and one of them lost two fingers. Granted, they didn't have the best method, but still...
