- Operation Allied Force commenced on 24 March 1999. It was a NATO operation against Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. One of NATO aircraft heavily involved, although not necessarily in the spotlight was A-10. Taking off from Aviano and later Gioia del Colle in Italy, pilots of this aircraft performed not only strike missions but also vital Forward Air Control (Airborne) and Combat Search and Rescue.
On 2 May 1999, Major Phil 'Goldie' Haun was flying a FAC(A) sortie over Eastern Kosovo. Problems with SEAD support made his mission very challenging but ground defenses would prove to be the greatest challenge.

NEW INFO: One of my viewers from Serbia, Andrija Kostic happens to be a neighbor of the man who hit the American A-10. It was Sergeant (vodnik) Zoran Karcic who operated Strela 1-M (SA-9 Gaskin). He is still in active military service today. / NOVE INFORMACIJE: Moj gledatelj iz Srbije, Andrija Kosrić igrom slučaja je susjed čovjeka koji je pogodio američki A-10. Radi se o tadašnjem vodniku Zoranu Karčiću koji je bio operater sistema Strela 1-M (SA-9 Gaskin). Još uvijek je u aktivnoj vojnoj službi.
The inevitable question is... did Karcic claim a downed A10...? Did the Serbians know/realize at the time that the A10 "pissed on their parade" as the saying goes.

Got to love the A-10's ability to take a punch and still fly back long enough for the pilot to reach friendly airspace, in this case the pilot even managed to land it smoothly.
And very surprisingly, he even brought back all of the payload.

Several more got hit according to book "A10 over Kosovo". One of the engine cowling rings is a trophy in one of the AD units.

According to whom? The Serbian Fairy Tale Society? Shut the hell up please, every year as the anniversary of the Serbian loss in the Kosovo war and the Independence Day of the Republic of Kosovo comes around, the Serb media trolls just start making up new BS fairy tales about downed NATO planes and miraculous military wins which nobody saw nor there is any evidence of. What's next on the menu for this year besides this - maybe another B-2 was shut down by the glorious Serbian military on top of that first one nobody ever saw that supposedly fell in Croatia and was covered up by the agents Scully and Mulder of the X-Files branch of the FBI. Or did a Serbian submarine sneak its way from the Morava and Danube rivers to the Mediterranean and sink a US plane carrier? I guess we shall see, stay tuned for more of Serbian Fairy Tales...
Glad to see a video made about this event. I have talked about this for years. I was stationed with the 81st fighter squadron when this happened. Amazing to see the plane back up and flying after swapping out the motor and of some other parts of course. There was another plane that took a hit in the belly and kept on flying as well. Both planes had purple hearts painted on them.

while a civilian engine mechanic for the us navy at alameda nas, i worked on the components and engine for the tf34-100 engine used in the a10. we provided direct support for the a10's used in desert shield and desert storm
Still the craziest recovered air frame yet to me is the Negev incident of 1983... a F15 managing to land with one wing only...

Just small update. His plane was fixed on Skopje airport after some time. The whole right engine was replaced, and flown back to Italy.

A-10A carries no targeting pod and the scene and narration changed to “this Low Tech piece of equipment”, I.e. a pair of binoculars.

@@JohnWick-yh5kn samo 4 unistena tenka za 74 dana bombardovanja i hiljade letova A10 na Kosovu. Leteli su po 4-5 aparata na malim visinama. Gledao sam ih svakodnevno.. Povlacili su se na najmanju pretnju sa zemlje.
Sjajan video, bez greske! Javljam ti se za koji dan ako uspem da izvucem nesto sto bi ti bilo interesantno konkretno za ovu situaciju.

I saw this event, but I only heard 3x20mm AAA right before the engine failure. Never saw any missiles from the manpads.
That is possible. The A--10 lead and his wingman never saw what exactly hit the aircraft.
@@showtime112 After that a saw BOV M-55 with 3x20mm turret whizzing through the main street of Gnjilane while changing position, and A-10 and wingman slowly drifting towards Macedonia. The sound of quitting engine was awfull grinding. Probably the blades hitting the frame while seizing.

Just like the Su25, takes a hit like a champ and flies away.
They are both built to survive. How much they can still do it in modern warfare is questionable though.
@@showtime112 most of the Russian planes shot down by Ukrainians in the current Russian invasion of Ukraine, are Russian Su-25s and most of them crashed. I guess that A-10 is sturdier than its Russian counterpart.

I really liked the overlay at 4:55 for simulating binoculars. Also it must have been really hard to get the same exact weak lock at 05:54, you were only 4 miles away from the target too.
Thanks! I needed to point out that A-10 pilots used this relatively simple and cheap device in the time of targeting pods and datalinks. The flashing cross was actually easier to simulate than I thought. In both cases, I got locks on empty revetments which gave that 'weak' lock indication.
@@showtime112 binoculars don't need warming up and your viewing limit with them is how far you can turn your neck, plus the A10 is a slow aircraft so you don't lose sight of things on the ground as easily as in fighter aircraft.
Sadly people like me that wear glasses can't use binoculars without taking off our glasses :(

It takes more than that to take out an A-10, the plane is design to fly on one engine if hit !!
The A-10 simply looks right (to me as an Army Aviator who thinks the USAF should invest more effort in CAS).
Some call it ugly but I say it looks the part 😁

Helicopters are good when we need to get in close going low and slow. But we also need to know that when we need big bombs on target anywhere, anytime, the USAF is going to uphold their end of the 1947 bargain and come running.

Interesting that he didn't jettison all those weapons after being hit. Or, perhaps he may have. I would think he would want as clean an aircraft as possible after that.
He definitely didn't. There's a photo of the damaged A-10 in Skopje airport and the only thing missing is one Maverick he launched during the sortie. It is quite strange, at least he could have dropped the Mk82s.
Maybe he feared that jettisoning the load will broke the equilibrium he managed to do on the plane

As much as I love the A-10, having it in service just isn't worth it anymore.
Although updated to the C variant, the design is still 50 years old... and in combat with any modern nation would be swatted out of the sky because of its... Lacking speed, not to mention its range being sub-par .
The Air Force basically just used it as a moral booster for ground troops, as a gun run from an A-10 Is quite the sight in war time... Rather than an F-16 just dropping a Mk. 82 from 20,000 feet.
I'm probably not objective but I wish they never developed any fifth gen or whatever. They should have all just stayed with the late Cold War equipment. And without those damned drones 😁

Great video again. There was a famous American USAF pilot in the Korean War who was an Ace, named Captain Jabbar also, I wonder if that is his ancestor. He died in Florida in a car accident.

Hvala! Oba mogu biti prilično efikasna ako se ispravno koriste. Su-25 je nešto brži, A-10 ima jači top. E sad, možda je današnje ratno okruženje malo preopasno za oba modela (pogotovo A-10A koji nije imao gotovo ništa od napredne elektronike).
Hvala na odgovoru mada trenutno u Ukraini ima dosta oborenih SU 25 mozda mnogo vise nego sto je ikad oboreno A 10 aviona
@@secastabala Vjerojatno zbog načina upotrebe i taktike. Plus, sistemi protuavionske obrane su isto napredovali u zadnje vrijeme.
@@secastabala u Ukraini se Su25 masovno koristi na obe strane. Totalno je druga prica. Nije za poredjenje. Ukraina je ogromna teritorijalno, mnogo opremljenija sa PVO siatemima od tadasnje Jugoslavije i piloti Su25 se ne povlace na najmanju pretnju sa zemlje kao sto su radili piloti A10.

Slabo. Od dronova, DCS ima jedino američke Predatore i Reapere. Plus jedan kineski koji izgleda gotovo isto kao i ovi američki, ne mogu se sjetiti oznake.
Zapravo, ne znam koliko bi bio zanimljiv video o tome. U osnovi se ništa nije događalo osim što je dron letio ravno i pao na grad.

Assuming he lost the right engine and it was shut down, the speedbrakes would have never worked on landing...
Because of the hydraulics? The damage model is probably not that well simulated. The right engine was definitely turned off, both in real life and here.

Officially, no. There are some indications but if it really happened, it might be revealed in some distant future. However, it is pretty certain that another F-117 was damaged.

That's quite strange. Pilot even described that he had to maintain descent to stay in a controlled flight. And then, photos clearly show he landed with all of the payload.

How about a video on the air to air kill by an aardvark with a smart bomb on an Iraqi helicopter in the first gulf war?
We don't have the EF-111 in simulations. As for the laser bomb kill, this was done by an F-15E and the module should be available in DCS in near future so then, I'll probably do it.
