The morning milking: Elemental Spicy and Laoise. We share with you our morning milking routine. Calf sharing. Our herd has progressed to a point that our first time heifers do not require their babies to let down their milk. This makes milking so much nicer.

Cute video. I've only milked two of my Dexter heifers in the field, just to see what the milk tasted like, but have yet to have a more established milk area. Fresh raw milk is certainly delicious though.

Thanks!! Yes we do. We make 100% water replaced with milk, soap. It is Amazing 🤩! So good on every skin type from baby to aging. So gentle.
Curious how much milk you typically get per cow? And if you leave calves on or calf share etc? The dexters seem like a lovely breed 🥰
I typically get 1 gallon per cow, while calf sharing, once a day.. That’s generally a first timer. This year, I’ll get more as my first timers go into their second lactation. I calf share the entire lactation, drying them off two months before their next calf. While they are lactating, this gives me the freedom to milk or not milk. If I don’t milk, the calf will do it for me.
Dexters are a lovely breed if you find the right cow. Get one that has been halter trained and handled. My # 1 advice, don’t buy a wild field cow. It may not be worth the effort. If it is, it will take a very longtime to win her over. If she can ever be won over. When getting into large animals, try to make it as easy as possible.

How did you know that you don't need a calf to let down her milk? Did you tain her to do that? Is it a feature of Dexter cows? Please, explain.
If the milk is flowing no need to use the calf to bump to get milk. . If you feel there’s more milk to get. You can bring in the calf to bump her udder. This will stimulate her to let down more milk.. Let calf nurse for about 30 or so seconds. Pull calf off the teats. Tie the calf next to momma. Begin milking again to finish. Does that make sense?
@@ElementalDexters yes but how did you know that you didn't have to do that with your cow?
If she’s holding up her milk, you won’t get much to any milk. That’s when you know you need the calf to bump her udder, to stimulate the milk flow.
If she’s giving you plenty of milk the flow is good, you know she’s letting down without the calf.
I didn’t teach this, but my whole herd is used to being milked. Babies grow up watching momma be milked. So it’s something they all feel comfortable doing. When they are comfortable, they naturally let down.
Do you shave your cows utters? They have very little hair on them.
I never shave my cows udders.
I have recently, 2022 just started trimming them with scissors.
Some people will say the alfalfa gives the milk an odd flavor.
Weird, I’ve never heard that or experienced it.
