  • After MANY requests from YOU, this community...
    I FINALLY BOUGHT THIS SHEEP MILK MACHINE!
    A handy, dandy little hand pump that gently milks those ewes that may have just a bit too much milk right off the start.
    This ewe was engorged, with triplets... and the only way to get them on her, was to milk her out first.
    Also had a wee one injure her leg in the lambing pen with mama...
    So I walk you guys through how I cast a lamb's leg.
    #lambing #sheep #farming
    For more info on this milk machine, here is the link to their website!

I've been dairy, ranch and sheep/goat farming most of my life and I adore Sandi already. This is real life. She really is fantastic at this, even if some days she doesn't think so.

    You know you've been at this awhile yet this season you started with a lamb Taxi a resuscitator and now a milker! It's really great to see how you've evolved in this season alone. Not to mention the way you're backtracking on the genetics. I guess it's a never-ending process. But it's really interesting to watch from the bleachers.

    I love what your vet told you. Sounds smart. If it's any comfort, vets are smarter about nutrition and all around health of their patients than doctors for people. I wish that I could go to a vet for my health rather than a drug pushing doctor for humans.

      In the 1980's I was nursing my own lil lambs (;) and I used a manual breast pump that was (almost) dentical as your ewe milk pump. Funny to see the design is still in use. I love learning from your videos about the labor of love in nurturing a flock of sheep.

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 3 роки тому +1

      @@ninacohen5401
      Forgive me Nina, I have a wry comment: you do realize the design is still in use because neither the breast or the ewe teats have changed in that time, nor the need to express the milk! In design, form follows function. In this design it means the design of the milk pump will remain essentially the same so long as milk is produced the same way, by the same body. If in 100 years sheep are all double the size, they will need to enlarge the pumps. Otherwise, they don't need to change them at all, although technology may allow them to streamline them.

    I hadn't mentioned this before, but thank you Sandi for teaching us how to splint a leg! My cat had been limping, and wasn't giving herself time to rest and not jump, so we splinted her leg based (roughly) on your instructions, and helped her take some resting time! I never would have thought to splint her had it not been for your videos, and it really stopped her leaping around and over-stressing the weak limb. So thank you for the advice!

    • @Neffectual
      @Neffectual 3 роки тому +2

      @@h.s.6269 Of course - we'd already taken her to the vet and were advised that nothing was broken and there was no external damage, but to try and keep her from using it as much as possible. So the splint worked great for following that advice.

      @Neffectual 3 роки тому +3

      @@vwvw4 Yeah, she'd already seen a vet and it had been determined it wasn't a break, external injury, or anything they could find, so we should keep her from jumping about - the splint worked great for that!

    Sandy, regardless of how hard you work, you just can't save them all. Regardless of how hard mom worked to get them full term, there are those who just don't have the will to live. For whatever reason, they drown, too long in labour, not enough space in mom at the end, who knows. In my eyes, you saved three, two lambs and a ewe. I'm glad you have all the gear now and everyone you save raises the possibility of you making a profit at the end of the year. Don't beat yourself up. As the saying goes "you done good".

      I think Sandi, sometimes you over-think ...and THAT'S just your conscience keeping your
      diligent self in check. Did you see the way that ewe "presented" to you?
      Immediately knew help is here, my rescuer is gonna make this better...
      AND SHE DID!
      That 6th sense pet's and herd animals have abt "their people"...well
      they know...so simple.
      We assign our human barriers to them...but it seems they just trust.
      I marvel at that purity...no other way...just trust and obey!
      Why must we question so?

    On my brother's dairy farm we froze colostrum. When we had a really full cow freshen that had good colostrum, we saved what her baby didn't drink and froze it in ziplock freezer bags. then when we had a mom freshen that didn't have any milk or poor quality colostrum, we got the good stuff out and warmed up for the baby to give them a good start and save a ton of money buying the artificial stuff. we also bought 2 pasturizers and instead of dumping scrap milk, we pasturized it and fed calves with it to save money on milk replacer.

    As you rehab Vanilli, you could multi-purpose your weighing sling as a walking hip harness to give your lamb a boost as it learns to walk on that cast. It will save your back, make it easier to keep up with the lamb as it takes steps and be more ergonomic as a rehab aid. (I work in human rehab and my brain won’t shut off when it comes to stuff like this).I hope now that it’s casted up through the hip it’s able to heal. I love that you’re trying so hard and always open to learning.

  • @justanotherchannelfornow2846
    @justanotherchannelfornow2846 3 роки тому

    I don't know how many times I've made this recommendation... Sandi you need a sling, it's simple to make out of 2 t-shirts but that lamb can be held up with a sling so her leg can heal a little. My sister did it with a lamb that had a broken leg worse than any of your breaks... she cast it in a plaster cast like a human, slung it up in a sling in our garage and nursed it until it could stand on the cast a little and then a little at a time increased the time the leg was being used until it was time to re-set the cast. The lamb gradually healed up completely. It had 2 breaks, top and bottom. It took a lot of time and dedication, but it worked and it lived and was a fine quality ewe the following year. Sew the bottom of the t-shirts into a tube shape that you can string a rope through. Then place the one t-shirt on the front and the one on the rear and cut the neck opening to fit so it can deficate and go pee. Of course it's different for males, just make sure the center is open for males. I think you get the picture.

    I have been watching your videos and enjoying every one of them! I love sheep and always have. I love how you handle them, you are so gentle and sweat. My favorite is the lambing. I know that part of sheep farming some don’t make it and others have to go, it is the cycle of life. God gave them to us to enjoy, to clothe us with their wool and to feed us. If I was younger, I’d love to come out and spend time with you and help out! Keep up your beautiful work!

    You did the best you could lady. I worked quite a few night shifts doing the
    same thing in the 1980s. Bless you. I know it's really hard. When you have to take care of several thousand sheep up in the mountains it can break you down. Remember always, they are worth the effort. Best regards.

    Just a thought for high femur fractures, a spica cast is used on human toddlers for that. It could possibly work for little lambs to stabilize the pelvis, hip socket and femur. I love watching this channel. Thank you so much for all the hard work.

      I stumbled upon Sandy's pod n now I'm hooked. I love animals n this pod cast has given me much education on sheep. I'm a Christian, so my Bezt Friend in the whole of everything is "The Lamb Of God", our Jesus! How awesome a job to have to take care of those sheep n lambs.
      Sandy is so compassionate. I'm hooked!
      God bless all of yall n protect you m yours n a special blessing to Sandy n her crew.

    I had an older lamb that had broken its hip. I made a harness out of a grain bag and some ratchet straps, hung her up so she could touch the ground and be able to put weight on it if she wanted. It took a couple of weeks to heal and strengthen enough to be able to recover enough to walk. I still had to separate her from most of the herd for a while longer but it worked
