  • After the day's flying was finished at the Southern Cross Warbirds event at the Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club. A second-hand standoff scale Caribou, refitted with modern engines and radio gear flies again after a long time out of the air. The test flight doesn't go as planned.
More info: Regarding some CG comments, it wasn't tail heavy and it had extra nose weight added for the test flight. What "looks" like tail heavy is because, while the test pilot had his hands full, he asked to owner to add down trim on the radio. Up trim was inadvertently added, hence the pitching up. Once the trim got sorted at the same time the engines stopped, it flew (glided) OK as you can see on its stealth approach to the tree tops.

Throttle back .... and slow down on a maiden flight. Then trim it out . the aileron may have stayed on . Oh well ,, there's always another plane .

As soon as it showed signs of flight instability I would have backed off power and turned it back to the field for landing straight away.....looked very much tail heavy right from liftoff

He was doing a pretty good job of bringing it in too. That pitch-up almost emulated the famous video of one crashing after cargo shift.

I've had models detach flying surfaces due to severe flutter. I've found that balancing the surfaces, no matter how small - I even balance indoor models - helps control flutter. A tight pushrod connection also helps, but flutter is torture to a servo and will eventually make it fail.

Excellent work by the test pilot! Looks like he was dealing with the "dogs breakfast" from the get-go but still managed to maintain a degree of control despite the obvious trim deficiencies. Looks like most of the damage will buff out and the Caribou will have another chance to redeem itself.

Aileron detaches, both engines cut. Seems like a well prepared models for the test flight.

It used to be my professional job to deliberately crash new model designs. This was to determine any weaknesses in the design and to determine what spare parts the manufacturer should have available. I'd then have to write the Repair Guide and advise on any design modifications to make models more crash resilient. Crash Resilience is something all model builders should think about.

Tail Heavy. The pilot did well. but might have saved it had he tried to land it sooner .It was obvious there were significant problems.
I started a build of one of those but stopped when I found that the amount of weight needed to balance gave a wing loading that was unacceptable.
The Radial engines on those are extremely heavy.

Not bad for stand off, funnily enough it actually sounds like a Caribou in mating season. Sorry for your loss - the world needs more Caribou -like models at the fields . Whoever thought you could get flutter on a Bou!!

Thanks for sharing this video, she was a great looking craft! There were probably multiple set-up factors at play (like CG location, engine thrust angle, trim angles, or simple surface alignment. Clearly the aileron was an issue that would cause the roll/bank trouble. But the way she kept climbing indicates something else. Further, twin engines provide a lot of thrust, so less throttle might have helped. Best of luck with her...rebuild it, she's looks like a worthy ship.

Always sad to see so much damage and on the first test flight. Sigh. Obviously full check out of all construction might have helped but not all issues can be seen outwardly. (Fuel tanks) Looks like that last tree needs a little height adjustment to reduce it's "Reach." That was just so close to a nice recovery.

Enjoyed ur video but sad about the Caribou. The full scale was a great plane and very durable and often had tree branches in the landing gear back in the day. Those Canadians made a great plane.

Jeez that one had just about anything and everything that could go wrong, actually did go wrong. Great example of cascading failure. "Cascading failure is kind of failure in a system comprising interconnected parts, in which the failure of a part can trigger the failure of successive parts."

  • @Eigil_Skovgaard

So, the unexpected engine stop was caused by fuel starvation - it first looked like a deliberate decision - maybe to stabilize the flight with only one aileron. Bad luck. Hope to see it fly again. Good video details.
