R/C Aerotow towline drop test
Переглядів 72Рік тому
Lost tow lines are a risk if you fly over farm land. They can get tangled in machinery and can hurt livestock. We like to keep our farming neighbours happy. Amongst other ideas, tow release testing, better communication between pilots and development of small light GPS tracker, we have added a parachute to the tug end of the line.

First try with wing tip extensions on a recently purchased secondhand r/c model. We have two of these in our group now. The are built very nicely and the previous owners both commented on their tendency to "snap" if flown too slowly. They are great fun to fly. Originally MHM kits from Germany. 3.9m to 4.4m span

From the Southern Cross Warbirds event at Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club was this unusual scale subject. It is powered by an RCGF 30cc twin, the underbody skid "hoop" can be steered to give it some ground handling. Yes, it does look like someone forgot to put on the outer wing panels.
R/C Caribou test flight goes wrong

After the day's flying was finished at the Southern Cross Warbirds event at the Tin Can Bay Model Flying Club. A second-hand standoff scale Caribou, refitted with modern engines and radio gear flies again after a long time out of the air. The test flight doesn't go as planned. More info: Regarding some CG comments, it wasn't tail heavy and it had extra nose weight added for the test flight. Wha...

    How do you switch the power on and off if the canopy is closed???

    • @bananamanyt
      @bananamanyt Місяць тому

      Magnetic switch or a Jeti remote switch. If the drive fails closed. I plan to be able to remove one screw on each side of the canopy and it will slide back.

    The full scale Blanic, was grounded by the FAA, too bad, I used to teach aerobatics in New England on it, only loops and wingovers were permited, no rolls . The wheel retracted only part way. The wings are swept forward, unlike the model also had flaps. Disapointing!

    • @bananamanyt
      @bananamanyt 8 місяців тому

      If you are disappointed by the FAA grounding them, can't help you. If its forward sweep, I can help with that, the model does it just like the original, its just the camera lens playing tricks. Have a look at the manufacturers video ua-cam.com/video/4mdM-13QkVU/v-deo.html

      @@bananamanyt my apologies The reason is that the model should represent the real one dynamically except for the Reynolds number, to demonstrate the difficulty of flying a roll, keeping the nose from slighty above the horizon to slightly below, without the tendency to spin, with the rudder deflection limit. The limiting factor is the indicated maneuvering speed, Va, the structural limit for full control deflection, It is a placard in the cockpit, not on the speed indicator. It is s nice sailplane, flew it in Spartanburg, in Colorado , Alabama and with a winch launch in Torrey Pines, into the low clouds, with the vertical visible above, before breaking out over the beach, an unintended IMC encounter.

    Always sad to see so much damage and on the first test flight. Sigh. Obviously full check out of all construction might have helped but not all issues can be seen outwardly. (Fuel tanks) Looks like that last tree needs a little height adjustment to reduce it's "Reach." That was just so close to a nice recovery.

    Thanks for sharing this video, she was a great looking craft! There were probably multiple set-up factors at play (like CG location, engine thrust angle, trim angles, or simple surface alignment. Clearly the aileron was an issue that would cause the roll/bank trouble. But the way she kept climbing indicates something else. Further, twin engines provide a lot of thrust, so less throttle might have helped. Best of luck with her...rebuild it, she's looks like a worthy ship.

    Jeez that one had just about anything and everything that could go wrong, actually did go wrong. Great example of cascading failure. "Cascading failure is kind of failure in a system comprising interconnected parts, in which the failure of a part can trigger the failure of successive parts."

  • @rickbear7249
    @rickbear7249 Рік тому

    It used to be my professional job to deliberately crash new model designs. This was to determine any weaknesses in the design and to determine what spare parts the manufacturer should have available. I'd then have to write the Repair Guide and advise on any design modifications to make models more crash resilient. Crash Resilience is something all model builders should think about.
