A Sooty Grouse with two babies at Hurricane Ridge, Olympic National Park, Washington State

A momma Grouse and her two young ‘uns popped out onto the trail near us while we were taking shelter from the rain and having a snack break. They hung out near us and eventually the two babies crawled underneath the momma, snuggling in under her brisket while she peacefully laid there near us. It was a very lovely tranquil little scene on the mountain side. We finished our snack and departed from them, leaving them to their rest.
