Mirai in the Wild: The Olympics

  • Spires of subalpine firs balance verdant growth and death by desiccation. As natives to the subalpine forest of Olympic National Park, these trees exist in a flux of extremes, where harsh winters and heavy snow beget the summer’s most delicate flora-a give and take of the elements that defines the life that thrives here.
In quiet moments of reflection, when observation becomes awe, and that awe instills respect, we understand the connection between the peace we find within, and the desire to outwardly express that understanding of peace through a lifestyle of respect toward our planet and fellow beings.
Bonsai creates a timeless relationship between human and tree that enhances our comprehension and relationship with nature. Mirai in the Wild is an original series that follows artist and bonsai professional Ryan Neil as he journeys to the native landscapes of endangered, ancient and significant trees. Embedded in the environment, he processes and understands the elements in the way that the tree does- interpreting and expressing the aesthetic of nature through the art of bonsai.

From being with you for 10 days with my brothers Mirai is the future of bonsai and all it encompasses; without a doubt the
most beautiful and poignant narrative, it makes me feel very very humble and grateful to be part of this world and part of Mirai

It is past time to put video/film credits on these pieces of art. I believe that this was probably shot by Josh. Whoever is responsible for filming and editing deserves incredible respect and accolades. This piece should be entered in an appropriate category for awards! Thanks for taking us on this journey. As a NYU film graduate, I say this piece was simply awe-inspiring! Bonsai was cool, too, Ryan.

I think the team at Mirai has done an excellent job at capturing the importance of how nature influences the art of bonsai, and the production of these vidoes always appear to be of the highest quality, especially the snippits of livestreams.

I have been watching peoples videos saying "we are getting yamadori" then they go out and slaughter a tree. Someone recently said "we used to find a bonsai and made it a tree in a pot, now they go out and find a tree and make it a bonsai". They even videoed collection trees in a National Forest!!! I think they should watch this video and gain a new understand of our relationship with the forest.
