    I’d have to say the thing I hate most about this specialty is how BAD things are when they are bad. Poor outcomes happen in all areas of healthcare and what a blessing it is to help people through the hard times in their lives, but unlike other areas where people are going to the hospital with a problem, expecting families aren’t just dealing with the grief of the poor outcome but the grief of the precious positive experience they were expecting when they came to the hospital and/or the future they envisioned leaving. I’m such an empath and feel too deeply all the things these women mourn.

      Samantha Olcott ahh this is so true. Perinatal loss is unique from others- a woman mourns not only the loss of her baby but the loss of mothering that baby, and the possibilities in the child’s life. Also, she may feel failed by her body and question her womanhood. It’s deep and heavy. I’ve evolved as a nurse in this role to empower these woman and their families and help provide meaning to their baby. But It’s hard work and I still get emotional!

    The only time I have ever questioned "what am I doing here..why did I choose this".. is when people use me and/or my coworkers as a punching bag. Most nurses go into the profession because they genuinely love people. I am 100% a sensitive empath. It is really really hard when you are giving your all (all while needing to pee and eat yourself,) and a person treats you like poop on the bottom of their shoe. I have taken care of amazing people who are battling God awful things and intense levels of pain, and they dont let that be an excuse for abusing their medical staff. I guess I should say, it can be really difficult to take care of low character people.

      I would like to say, even though you probably have never been my nurse before, THANK YOU. People like you are worth more than gold. You will never know. I am pregnant with baby #6 and having a good nurse has made all the difference in my labor outcome. Thank you so much for not giving up when 'those' types of people don't give you all the respect you deserve. Thank you.

      MB Wilson so I had this pt last night ! I went above and beyond for their daughter !! I mean I was turning that girl like a pancake from side to side to turn the baby! All night full of interventions and stress and calls to the provider! And at then end while I was giving report to the oncoming nurse the mother made a comment when she saw that the other nurse has BSN and I don’t !!! Does that freaking matter at this point! That did not impede my care to her daughter at all but still she threw that comment on my face like that! I can’t even say the comment coz it just make feel her need to put me down , and what’s worse is the nurse I gave report to rubbed it in ! I mean , I actually cried on my way home coz I held my anger and stress in front of everyone else to give them the best birthing experience!!! And st the end it was not appreciated at all, I mean it was my duty but people need to realize that they are killing the empathy out of us nurses.

    When I was in labor at the hospital, the nurses would come in every hour to check on me and change my positions with the "peanut" ball. I was sleeping the whole time.i was in labor because it was during the night. At around 5:30 a.m., I woke up to feeling pressure down there; after about a few minutes of this, I called in my nurse, telling her I felt pressure. She stated she was just about to come in and ask me if I felt anything going on, as she saw the readings on the monitor at the nurses' station. I only had to push four times because my daughter was already halfway through the birth canal before i started pushing. A nurse got to deliver her. The midwife was literally walking into the room, putting her gloves on, right when my daughter was born.

      I've been in nursing since 1998 and I'm only 42 years old. So, my whole life! I LOVE ICU, agree with vomit; however sputum is my nemesis! Nothing better than grandaddy having a lung infection and hocking loogies all over the bed! Lol and yes, YOU are responsible for cleaning that up unless you want your hand at all day! Oh GAG! 😁 I've always want to do in labor and delivery but I was honestly scared! I've been a nurse my whole life and I'm just ready for a change and I think I may try labor and delivery and it's videos like these that make me feel a little bit more reassured about changing and trying something new. I'm a labor doula going back to school for my RN this fall... and will probably specialize in L&D and then go on to a Nurse Midwifery program... I can already say that from being in the delivery rooms and watching nurses come in and chart and mess with the EFM... that I will STRUGGLE with having to focus on the charting and monitors when my heart wants to be there for the mother (but I'm used to med free labors so it might not be so hard if they are on an epidural) Vomit from a laboring mom I can do.... haha - because I know it's not from being "sick" and it's just her body getting rid of stuff so it can focus on labor and not digestion. I guess having kids has helped me deal with bodily fluids. Thanks for the video - good to know the reality of L&D nursing.

    Hi someone please help!! I’m 17, about to graduate high school. I’m going to a community college for 2 years, then I plan to transfer. I’ve always loved babies and I want to specialize in a career that has to do with them. I’ve been leaning towards L&D nurse or NICU nurse. I have severe anxiety and thinking about what steps I have to take freak me out. What general education classes are necessary? Is it okay that i’m attending a CC first. How hard is it to become a L&D nurse and how old would I be once I become a legitimate nurse if I constantly pursue the career. Thank you, I have so many questions!

    • @brekeith4709
      @brekeith4709 5 років тому

      A community college is going to give you an associates degree, wether you get a bachelors (4 years) or an associates (2-3) years you take the SAME licensing test. Community college is smart, you will have less debt and can get your bachelors online. We don’t know your birthday so you will have to figure out your age on your own?. Most labor and delivery units won’t take new grads but if you get into a teaching hospital there’s a better chance of being a new grad and starting out in labor and delivery, you may have to get a year of med sure experience first before they consider you!

    I work with children 6w-6yr. The vomit and spit up used to really get to me but idk we had a kid my first year who vomitted all over me at least once a week every week the entire year and it desensitized me. Now what I hate most is parents who think it's my job to raise their children. Like no, I teach your children. I keep them from dying. I entertain them. @@NurseAggz Thanks for the reply! I guess this is more the feedback I've been receiving from instructors and peers warning me that I would lose out on skills if I pursue L&D right out of school. There are a lot of procedures, meds, patient types that I wouldn't be working with so much in L&D. Honestly, I think that would be the case with any specialty. I really enjoy the science, history, culture and spirituality around birth and women's health and my dream job would probably focus on that somehow as a women's health NP or CNM.

      Rachida G This is true and I was in that scenario Friday night. Labor patient on magnesium, with epidural/pitocin, spanish speaking only, and I was precepting a brand new nurse. We have team leaders on my unit so she had to look out for my other laboring pt (on pitocin and with an epidural, and and IUPC so hey MVUs ) while I managed the mag patient. Without my team leader idk what I would’ve done 😩.
      I’ve learned from working with travel nurses that the charting requirements, in terms of fetal heart tones & contractions, differs at every hospital. Needless to say, I had to stay after shift change quite a while to do Q15 min charting on fetal monitoring strip that i hadn’t charted on since 8pm. After a long night like that I just wanna go straight home and knock out in my bed. Not chart MVUs and and heart tones lol 😆

    Hi, I work on another unit and im debating about L&D. It sounds exciting. My floor is heavy and would like to go into L&D. Would you recommend L&D?
