Great stuff for saxophone geeks! ;-) I was going to say that the difference you describe between the 875 and the EX in terms of tone is similar to the difference I've heard described comparing the Series II and Series III -- and then I saw your comment saying you prefer the Series II over the III, which makes sense. Thank you for your great videos! I have a Yamaha Custom 875 Alto purchased in early/mid 90s. I have always found it a bit more “resistant” as you describe. A highly regarded repair tech told me that many Yamaha models need the neck bore opened up slightly. I was hesitant but he was certain so I let him do it. The horn was immediately less resistant especially in low register and altissimo register and kept its great tone. Just curious on your thoughts here and if you have heard of players doing this. I have heard of other good repair techs doing the same thing as well
Thanks for the comment. Changing the neck bore definitely affects the sound and resistant - I used to use G1 Neck, which was darker and more resistant, but now I am using V1 neck which has different bore structure and gives less resistant and brighter tone quality.
In my opinion, Yanagisawa saxophones are much more in tune and they play really well. I would say Yanagisawa is the most neutral saxophone. Personally I prefer warmer quality of Yamaha saxophones especially in the high register, so I am willing to work with tuning issues with Yamaha.
EX is a wonderful instrument and many ways it’s better than old 875. EX has such a great control of tone production that I feel sometimes too restricted personally. I prefer to control the instrument myself, not vice versa.

Is it the same model as the 875ex and 875GP?
They are different. 875EX is newer than 875. "GP" means Gold Plated finish instead of regular lacquer finish.
how do you find this 875 compared to a 82 z ?
82z is much lighter and plays like extension of 62 series (you could say
they are flexible) 875series are much heavier and warmer in tone quality.
This sax not last generation.....? Looks like it was manufacturing...in 2008s....
