Another great video Josh! I wanted to take a second and thank you for all the time and effort you put into this channel. I've just recently made the jump from DJI products to self building FPV rigs and your content has been priceless. I work midnights as a Mental Healthcare Technician at a Forensic Mental Hospital and building/flying FPV has helped me deal with a recent and unwelcome bout of anxiety. I've struggled with ADD for over 20 years and it's been very common for me to throw myself 110% into something for a few weeks and then get totally burnt out. With your help the usual "wall of frustration" I normally hit when my technical abilities max out has been destroyed! So far there hasn't been one single issue I've hit that you haven't done a video on! I appreciate it so much, you're the first Patreon user I've ever committed to helping monthly! What I did to learn this a few years back was to fly past an object, constantly focusing on that object. Then, simply do that, but upside down. This not only helps you with adjusting your uptilt and getting a clean yaw spin but also makes the trick a bit more interesting (yes yes I know it's very interesting on its own but for the viewer, proximity tricks are always more impressive than doing the same move on an open field).
That last one you hit perfectly made me say immediately "He's gonna crash now". That's the thing when that happens it boosts your confidence to the sky and then ...
What worked for me was to practice yaw spinning the normal way up while focusing on a single point above me. Then I flipped... When I looked at a point and tried to maintain it, the controls were more intuitive than trying to maintain level horizon.
I agree with a lot of others, the "shortcut" is the way to do it. Gotta give a shout out to headmazta that has an awesome tutorial on inverted yaw spins. Great job explaining the shortcut though!
Yeah, the 'shortcut' lets you get those super crisp, super flat spins. I only add roll when i screw up on getting properly oriented- lets you save the trick at least. The headmazta tutorial is the way to go.

My advice: punch throttle and pitch back a little (because you're probably flying forward) at the same time, roll to inverted (not pitch to invert), do your yaw... (I talked to you way back in 2017 or so about the inverted yawspin. Back then you were already annoyed by the "almighty trick"! Nice to see you're still trying! Keep it up!)

The one where you flick, 180 inverted yaw spin, 180 roll then, 180 Yaw spin again to go forward was really cool. Especially the last time where you did the first yaw spin one way and then the second the other. It's like a frilly juicy flick.
To be honest, for me it was way easier to get that angle that quad is perfectly upside down to just use Yaw axis. I've started to learn after Farouk's video (Smooth Violence FPV Freestyle) to get perfect Yaw locks and it took me about 2 month to let's say master ;)
A lot of people are cheating their roll too then 😌 Both centered and of axis yaw spins are nice to watch, and just should be considered at two separate tricks. Same for centered rolls and off axis rolls, it just adds some spice and interesting effects.
Coordinating yaw and roll for spinning flat while pitched forward isn't really easy, especially when you have different yaw and roll rates, since then for different angles the change in the mix of the two isn't even linear. So most pilots practicing the "non-shortcut" version of this trick will end up only doing it at a certain angle (most times with the horizon in the vertical center of the frame) anyway, so one might as well just use the "shortcut" since it's both easier and gives you more of the ground to look at, which is often the more interesting part of the frame. Also I'd say that generally an inverted yaw spin looks more impressive after a half flip forwards than after half a flip backwards or half a power loop - probably because often times one is closer to the ground after a juicy flick than after half a power loop, so the viewer isn't really expecting such a move. One using an inverted yaw spin while flinging yourself over an obstacle, remember: Flipping forward, then 180° inverted yaw spin and pull up will take you back in the direction you came from (which is like a cooler version of a split-s move) while doing a 360° inverted yaw sping after flipping forwards and then pitching back up will let you continue in the direction you were originally going - which is pretty logical if you think about it. ;)
If u want better hang in ur inverted yaw spin.. 1. Give ur self a good foward flick with downward pitch, like a juicy gets u inverted with good fowars momentum. 2. Keep ur idle percent between 4.5 and 5%.. 5.5% was always default.. been running 4.2% for over a yr.. better for dives keeps u stuck to the building and upside down longer 😉👍
Very nice to see you flying some more! Charing your process is great too. I find the hardest part of yaw spins is coming out of them in a smooth way. I guess it's the disorientation combined with the ground closing in that makes this trick one of the more panic causing :D
Am i the only one who learnt this movement from ground zero with roll in mind? Believe me or not I find compensating imperfections on the horizon by roll, easier than trying to get the quad perfectly flat inverted all the time. Btw one recommendation, roll into inverted yaw spin so you end up giving similar roll-yaw mixes to compensate your pitch as you end up inverted at your cruising angle. Also utilise yaw when rolling into the spin so you spin the quad around the camera and not spin the camera around the quad

Nice video JB ! I really like how we get on board with you along practicing a 'new' trick. I can't figure which obstacle or what kind of horizon view would make this trick cinematic. For now it feels like it's just part of the fpv pilot checklist of 'trick i can pull'.
The “stick banging” with timing to get the quad horizontal and use yaw input only is what allows you to do very clean inverted yaw impossibly close to the ground and combine inverted yaw with other moves. You get so quick it appears to the viewer that the quad has gone from upright flight into slowly yawing inverted with nothing in between and you have to stretch out the move if you want to achieve a different effect. I started the way you did with two inputs but getting muscle memory to put you into the flat inverted position with a very quick forward or backward half flip just works. I usually give the throttle a blip as I flip into the inverted position too, this allows me to do it very close to the ground etc.

Liftoff doesn't simulate the motors spinning up when yawing so inverted yaw spins are artificially easy there. IRL and in many other sims you'll start accelerating towards the ground faster when you apply the yaw.
The problem is what you mentioned, "I can't assume I'll land over my field". Last te I tried this, I went far up in the sky and thought I had a lot of time and assumed I would land back in my yard. I landed on my neighbors yard and there were people there. I almost shat my pants, I was so scared I never attempted this trick again, my property is to small.
If you fly a 3D quad inverted in a simulator you get a lot more practice time working on it - not to mention an entire host of new skills. Such as Inverted fly around a point left and right.
Inverted yaws are so hard to get clean looking. I practiced them in liftoff where I can do them low to the ground and clean due to liftoff having that floaty feel. In reality your kwad seems to come to the ground much quicker making it harder to look good and get a nice exit! Most tricks in the sim I do I can replicate on my kwad but not this one yet! Just a few more crashes away to getting it right😂
I think in some of your lines you could really benefit from doing the full 360, because then it allows you to keep your momentum and a more purposeful goal in your flight and the yaw spin adds to that and it's nicer when you come out of it, if that makes sense Whereas the 180 sort of slows down the momentum and kind of disorients everything Or maybe if you sort of just instantly went into something else out of the 180? Idk, you're an infinitely better pilot than me so 😅 Sorry it is rather late at night right now and idrk what I'm saying haha Really good video, love your content!

For the move at 15:13 over the house, try a backflip in frontflip out. It is more dramatic looking. Front to Front just looks like a punch to Split-s, which is cool but less yaw spiny.
I like to kick that pitch back over and over to get the muscle memory of being flat and like you said said just yaw! Its good to learn correction cause even when dialed in you will still over/under correct. 180 roll/yaws are weird and pitch forward is funky but a good one!
First trick i ever learned was the inverted yaw, i love em! :D they are tricky though, takes a fair bit of muscle memory of when to start the yaw after dropping throttle :)
Yes, certainly enjoyed it. Especially when you were saying *interesting* and *that was kinda cool* and I'm going the whole time *that would be me crashing 10 seconds in*... or *hello tree... let's just hang around here well out of reach* 😆 Showing the sticks was great - gave me some ideas on things to try...
I fly my main freestyle rig at 35° uptilt, and I've learned to accommodate for most tricks but the inverted yaw spin is the one I just can't nail down (I can nail them the "cheater way" as shown in this vid but they're not visually appealing). I can flat yaw spin all day not inverted, so I was equally as confused as you to why it's so difficult. I put the camera of my secondary freestyle quad to 5° and it's basically a beginners level trick to nail. Unfortunately I don't have as much fun with 5°, but it's nice to switch it up occasionally. Totally different flying styles between the two though.
Yaw is the fear why I don't use FPV, I let the daughter use the FPV and fly LOS, simply due to the fear or having to use YAW correction as I'm completely not used to it. My brain does up down on the left and turn on the right. Anything more is like my brain being overclocked and burning out. It doesn't help I don't have many open spaces in the UK to fly without smashing it into someone's face if I get it wrong.
I got more "flowy" my inverted jaw speen by going inverted past something tall and then track (lock on) it as I go by. Like the tip of a tree or light pole.
JB you only have to use yaw in right angle. Thats the easyest way to learn stop in right position. Or the same idk. Question: focus to one tree, fly on the right side of it, the same heigh, litle higher, make a 180° right roll at 10 meters away from it and follow the tree with yaw. This was a very very easy way for me to learn invert yaw spin. You want to leran this, so whats the different between learn right or learn cheating? 😂
I find doing them durring a power loop to be an easy way to get the hang of it. I know it sounds crazy but whe you do the power loop, as soon as you hit that flat spot at the top you just input yaw, catch it once it makes a full rotation and then continue the power loop. it sounds harder then it actually is in pratice.
Looks awesome. Even cleaner with a subject to look at below like the house at the end. Wonder if it would look better or sloppy to begin yaw either near the end of the initial invert or maybe blended into the exit invert?
I LOVED this video, not only with what you said, but what you didn't say. I think you might have tapped into something there at the 12:05 mark, where you said it was playing catch with yourself, banging the sticks. I think if someone were to do a little sim work, then do the maneuver a few times with some altitude just to get comfortable with it, then simply do a couple packs a day just "playing catch with yourself" and forget about the overall trick, just get some solid muscle memory on the very basics of the trick. for a couple days or a week even. Then go and start trying it in proximity moves, and I'm betting they'll be much more acrobatic, or smooth freestyle looking. I'm gonna test out that hypothesis and let you know in a week or so. Also at the end there when the trick was starting to look good over your house, instead of doing a 360 in order to pitch out of it going the same direction, could you roll out of a 180 to accomplish going the same direction, or do you have to pitch out of it in order to be a text book inverted yaw spin?

I focus the camera on something and then mix yaw and roll keeping the camera locked in then center of the spin or at least that's the goal but I also do it the other way where the horizon spins. Fun both ways
I´m rewatching Twin Peaks for the umteenth time, and there is an actor that looks a whole lot like I imagine you did in your younger years! Is it you? S02E2, right in the beginning of the episode
The horizon level when you are flying level, just needs to be reversed. for a clean inverted yaw only spin. So if its 70% sky, 30% ground just flip it to 70% ground and it will be perfect every time. Flip, wait for the horizon to line up then yaw 🍄
This is the way. I never thought of it as the "cheater" method, you'd do a fast yaw spin exactly the same way right side up. Punch up, pitch back to flatten the quad (so your view will have whatever angle you have it set at, say 80% sky, 20% ground), flick the yaw stick left or right and watch it spin while keeping the horizon level. Pressure here has the right of it if you want to do it inverted - simply flip the quad over and exchange your values. So in the case of above, if you need 80% sky to do a regular yaw spin, simply invert so you have 80% ground and 20% sky. As long as the horizon is level you can spin til you're hearts desire and do perfect invert yaw spins. This is one of the first tricks I've learned and one of my favorite. Looks really cool coming out of a loop or transitioning into a dive.
I found that easiest way to do that is: Fly near object. Then roll into it for 180 degrees and keep holding yaw for tracking object. Then just roll out to normal position.
That one move was "pretty friggin cool" and....ain't gravity a bitch?!? One move that I take pride in and do alot is the Rubiks Cube. Just need to add other combos to that move to make it look sweeter. Love how you keep keeping it real JB!

I used to do the mixing of sticks but for me I think it looks better the easy way, with a little more ground in the view. I suppose it depends on how much up tilt your cameras at, I'm at ~25* I could see if you at 35* or greater how you'd want to try and compensate to get a little more sky in view

Great video as always, Josh, but don't forget to practice you moves turning in both directions, otherwise you'll end up as the flying equivalent of a professional arm wrestler!
Is it possible to put a custom overlay in betaflight and based on your cam angle, you could simply line up the horizon with the marker and know that your quad is at an inverted 180? What about an indicator that turns on when the gyro indicates 180 degree +/- ??
I have no problem getting the yaw and roll together properly but I cant yaw while inverted without the quad rocketing to the ground at full speed even with the throttle at 0 or as close to it as i can. I can supposedly be well above the FAA limit, much higher than you were goin in this video and still pancake it before I get a single 180 yaw spin in.
The real trick to yaw spins is too get online first and order all parts needed for a good repair after attempting yaw spins lol To do them proximity I do have my camera angles memorized so I'm base flat and only input yaw. I never knew I was cheating lol
Just put all your quads in 3D mode and learn to fly like that then it is easy to do that move as long as you want. Whats not to love about 3D, you can still do normal accro with the perks of being able to fly upside down and its not hard to learn.

I hate non-centered rolls lol. They're so ugly. The more uptilt the uglier

For the move at 15:13 over the house, try a backflip in frontflip out. It is more dramatic looking. Front to Front just looks like a punch to Split-s, which is cool but less yaw spiny.
I agree. It just feels like a split S and is sort of boring.
I like to kick that pitch back over and over to get the muscle memory of being flat and like you said said just yaw! Its good to learn correction cause even when dialed in you will still over/under correct. 180 roll/yaws are weird and pitch forward is funky but a good one!

First trick i ever learned was the inverted yaw, i love em! :D they are tricky though, takes a fair bit of muscle memory of when to start the yaw after dropping throttle :)

I fly my main freestyle rig at 35° uptilt, and I've learned to accommodate for most tricks but the inverted yaw spin is the one I just can't nail down (I can nail them the "cheater way" as shown in this vid but they're not visually appealing). I can flat yaw spin all day not inverted, so I was equally as confused as you to why it's so difficult. I put the camera of my secondary freestyle quad to 5° and it's basically a beginners level trick to nail. Unfortunately I don't have as much fun with 5°, but it's nice to switch it up occasionally. Totally different flying styles between the two though.
The moves are awesome but what I notice is how freakin awesome that quad is flying 😁✌🏾
Yaw is the fear why I don't use FPV, I let the daughter use the FPV and fly LOS, simply due to the fear or having to use YAW correction as I'm completely not used to it. My brain does up down on the left and turn on the right. Anything more is like my brain being overclocked and burning out. It doesn't help I don't have many open spaces in the UK to fly without smashing it into someone's face if I get it wrong.

I got more "flowy" my inverted jaw speen by going inverted past something tall and then track (lock on) it as I go by. Like the tip of a tree or light pole.
The “Playing Catch” exercise is something i need to work on.
That's why I pitch back while applying yaw to get a flat spin when I'm upright. Haven't tried the inverted yaw spin yet looks like fun

JB you only have to use yaw in right angle. Thats the easyest way to learn stop in right position. Or the same idk. Question: focus to one tree, fly on the right side of it, the same heigh, litle higher, make a 180° right roll at 10 meters away from it and follow the tree with yaw. This was a very very easy way for me to learn invert yaw spin. You want to leran this, so whats the different between learn right or learn cheating? 😂
I find doing them durring a power loop to be an easy way to get the hang of it. I know it sounds crazy but whe you do the power loop, as soon as you hit that flat spot at the top you just input yaw, catch it once it makes a full rotation and then continue the power loop. it sounds harder then it actually is in pratice.
Looks awesome. Even cleaner with a subject to look at below like the house at the end. Wonder if it would look better or sloppy to begin yaw either near the end of the initial invert or maybe blended into the exit invert?

I LOVED this video, not only with what you said, but what you didn't say. I think you might have tapped into something there at the 12:05 mark, where you said it was playing catch with yourself, banging the sticks. I think if someone were to do a little sim work, then do the maneuver a few times with some altitude just to get comfortable with it, then simply do a couple packs a day just "playing catch with yourself" and forget about the overall trick, just get some solid muscle memory on the very basics of the trick. for a couple days or a week even. Then go and start trying it in proximity moves, and I'm betting they'll be much more acrobatic, or smooth freestyle looking. I'm gonna test out that hypothesis and let you know in a week or so.
Also at the end there when the trick was starting to look good over your house, instead of doing a 360 in order to pitch out of it going the same direction, could you roll out of a 180 to accomplish going the same direction, or do you have to pitch out of it in order to be a text book inverted yaw spin?

to keep your flow, after you do an inverted 180 yaw spin over your house, do a roll rather than front/back flip

I focus the camera on something and then mix yaw and roll keeping the camera locked in then center of the spin or at least that's the goal but I also do it the other way where the horizon spins. Fun both ways

The horizon level when you are flying level, just needs to be reversed. for a clean inverted yaw only spin.
So if its 70% sky, 30% ground just flip it to 70% ground and it will be perfect every time. Flip, wait for the horizon to line up then yaw 🍄
This is the way.
I never thought of it as the "cheater" method, you'd do a fast yaw spin exactly the same way right side up. Punch up, pitch back to flatten the quad (so your view will have whatever angle you have it set at, say 80% sky, 20% ground), flick the yaw stick left or right and watch it spin while keeping the horizon level.
Pressure here has the right of it if you want to do it inverted - simply flip the quad over and exchange your values. So in the case of above, if you need 80% sky to do a regular yaw spin, simply invert so you have 80% ground and 20% sky. As long as the horizon is level you can spin til you're hearts desire and do perfect invert yaw spins.
This is one of the first tricks I've learned and one of my favorite. Looks really cool coming out of a loop or transitioning into a dive.
I found that easiest way to do that is: Fly near object. Then roll into it for 180 degrees and keep holding yaw for tracking object. Then just roll out to normal position.
That one move was "pretty friggin cool" and....ain't gravity a bitch?!? One move that I take pride in and do alot is the Rubiks Cube. Just need to add other combos to that move to make it look sweeter. Love how you keep keeping it real JB!

I used to do the mixing of sticks but for me I think it looks better the easy way, with a little more ground in the view. I suppose it depends on how much up tilt your cameras at, I'm at ~25* I could see if you at 35* or greater how you'd want to try and compensate to get a little more sky in view

Is it possible to put a custom overlay in betaflight and based on your cam angle, you could simply line up the horizon with the marker and know that your quad is at an inverted 180? What about an indicator that turns on when the gyro indicates 180 degree +/- ??
I have no problem getting the yaw and roll together properly but I cant yaw while inverted without the quad rocketing to the ground at full speed even with the throttle at 0 or as close to it as i can. I can supposedly be well above the FAA limit, much higher than you were goin in this video and still pancake it before I get a single 180 yaw spin in.

It looks like an inverted yaw track? If you did close to the tree tops, it will be an inverted yaw track.
The real trick to yaw spins is too get online first and order all parts needed for a good repair after attempting yaw spins lol To do them proximity I do have my camera angles memorized so I'm base flat and only input yaw. I never knew I was cheating lol

Awesome job Joshua! I made a tutorial on that with stick cam. I think it's on my main channel.
Just put all your quads in 3D mode and learn to fly like that then it is easy to do that move as long as you want. Whats not to love about 3D, you can still do normal accro with the perks of being able to fly upside down and its not hard to learn.
