    Usually I reluctantly watch all the content on this channel, even if I know some of it is clickbaity. But this video Adam, this video is journalism and video production at its finest. I learned a bunch, the tone was near on perfect, and it really dove deep into the story behind Vince McMahon. I'd love to see more content like this, and I know it's probably a lot of work, but man, does it show. Well done.

      *lol* This isn't good journalism. Almost no sources, no inside knowledge, no own interviews, he used stuff from an interview that was done by Vince's own company (with Austin) and he even dares to use housewife psychology. Maybe read a good newspaper from time to time instead of calling youtubers journalists...

      Most of these quotes and stories are from article by The Ringer that came out a couple of weeks ago. Since Vince will more than likely never write an autobiography a writer made a collection of Vince quotes to the press over the years and made a very interesting story told mostly by Vince's own words.. The "stealing a car" joke was when Vince was talking about how he "stole cars" but he didn't consider it stealing since he always returned them.
      Check the article out. It's a fascinating read

    The irony in all this is that Vince's sociopathic tendencies were likely caused by his environment. They're tendencies he needed to develop to destroy the territories while his father died. He's a ridiculously fascinating man...
    Sorry, that was too intellectual for a comment on a UA-cam video by a wrestling fan. What I meant to say was, lol reins sucks.

    • @SirJoelsuf1
      @SirJoelsuf1 8 років тому +8

      Look, he could have done MUCH worse. I can't defend McMahon for destroying the territorial system but I'm not gonna fault him for it either. I mean if it wasn't him it was GOING to be Ted Turner, in one way or another. Maybe not by the 1990s, but it would have happened. Like government, wrestling was never designed to have such a large scale. But absolute power corrupts absolutely, and when you are like McMahon or Turner and you have tons of money and influence, it takes over like an addiction.

    • @kanastrasza
      @kanastrasza 8 років тому +5

      +Joelsuf Turner and Vince were (and are) absolute madmen on opposite ends of the spectrum, but I'd go with Vince every time. Ted has other ventures and I don't believe he would have the right touch for entertainment like Vince does.
      Just because Vince might be out of touch now doesn't mean he always was.

      Joelsuf Vince is still so much more preferable to Turner. Whatever people may think of Vince, he still puts everything he has into WWE. With Turner, it always felt like he bought WCW purely for his own entertainment. He was a fan, but didn't have the passion for it. And a lack of passion may have destroyed the business by now.
      So Vince was always the lesser of two evils.

    • @SirJoelsuf1
      @SirJoelsuf1 8 років тому +2

      I'm glad my argument was agreed on. WCW really was just some experiment to Turner, why else would he just hand over the operations of it to Jim Herd, Eric Bischoff and **shudder** Vince Russo? At least McMahon had some kind of vision and some kind of plan. Not to mention he had a 25 year old Rock hold the WWE title which at the time (1998) was unheard of in the Wrestling world.

    I agree that Vince is a terrible genius and that in my opinion he can be a bit of an insane genius as well. He did what he did to stick it to the man who had abandoned him with buying up all the wrestling territories, and I had no idea that he was sexually abused. I heard he was abused as a kid, but I always thought it was physical. I wouldn't wish both types on anyone.
    Think about it, if Vince didn't take the chances and do the things he did then there would be no Undertaker, Triple H, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and no other superstars that we know and love/hate. Think about it. The men I named above would be regular everyday guys with regular jobs. He saw potential in those guys and took a chance on them. Especially Undertaker who became the cornerstone of the company.
    I do believe that his ego gets in the way and he is very stubborn but he can't let go of something that's been pounded into him since his teen years.

As a fan (of wrestling and of WhatCulture), I felt like I was being stuffed with good info and for that I thank you. Since the day I first watched a WC Wrestling video, I knew that that was going to be my main wrestling channel of information and entertainment that is not a wrestling company (not untill WCPW, hahaha). This is one well thought out and very insightful video essay. Being a long time wrestling fan I actually never bothered to look at the life and especially the upbringing of VKMcM. Adams interpretation does make a lot of sense and especially Vince not experiencing the brotherhood/comradery of the Old School wrestlers and promoters sheds a whole new light on "his" baby, the WWE, especially in the last couple of years. Very well done, gentlemen!

      +DMG dubP Vince dont create a monopoly, it's just culture. Like, trying to do a monopoly it's easy, however, maintain the monopoly it's... Just impossible.
      The rockfeller tried a oil monopoly and they almost broke, because it's really, REALLY hard to maintain a huge company.
      Vince however started a Monopoly and... stopped, them and beyond he create a culture, and became the first ever mainstream wrestling company, and with that, he didn't need to continue the monopoly, people will just use his company, but not because they dont have other choises, it's because they want WWE.
      Vince create a culture, he had that vision of market and he used it, and them... Look what he got

      We don't have a specific word for it and that one does quite nicely, I guess.
      To take joy in someone else's misfortune is considered hideous and ugly and no one ever came with a single word for it, instead we would simply use a long sentence to explain it.
      With the world becoming so much "smaller" and there being so much more cultural exchange, it's really just about time to stop being surprised by things like this, although it's understandable how it would be surprising.

    Like all great men, Vince is an enigma made up of many contradictions. He's notoriously ruthless and hard-headed, but fighting out of his deeply troubled childhood gives a lot more context to that. However, the same man who would cold-bloodedly keep injured wrestlers on the road also wept when Mick Foley asked for help with young children who were sick or dying. He's fired the popular and loyal Jim Ross numerous times, yet left WrestleMania 30 to go to a hospital with the Undertaker.

    I never knew about Vince's upbringing being rough or that his dad VJM didn't actually help raise him. I respect him a great deal more than I already did ……also manly North Carolina is hilariously wonderful

    This... This is the best thing WhatCulture has produced in a long time. Possibly ever. I personally don't enjoy a lot of the 'character' work the hosts produce on this channel and will not watch certain videos if certain people are on them but this, this i could watch for hours. Genuinely interesting, well researched and a fantastic blend of wrestling knowledge and insight. More please!

    There's a story I read in a book called Sex, Lies, and Headlocks (whose accuracy has been called into question, but even with that it still makes sense) that I sometimes think affected Vince more than his physical and possible-sexual abuse: he didn't fight with those Marines alone, he did it with a gang of bored hoodlum teenagers who had nothing to do (and since it was the deep south and it was a recently built military base the main goal was to try and pick fights with black marines). His brother Jesse was also a part of the group, and supposedly Jesse got respect and admiration from his peers seemingly without trying, while Vince tried and tried and always failed, dismissed as "a wannabe".
    If this story is even half true, I don't think Vince has ever left that little gang of racist punks. Not deep down. And that NEED for respect drives everything he does. Every fuckup he has from killing the territories to doubling down over and over on Roman Reigns boils down to this: if you don't agree with him, you disrespect him. So fuck you.

    What a fascinating video. One that took things I did know and some really really important things when he was younger. I am surprised that Vince doesn't understand just how much interest and valuable his life story would be. Maybe he does and he is working on it privately released after he is gone.

    I knew Vince was born in my home state, North Carolina, even knew he went to school at East Carolina University, but I didn't know he lived in Havelock. That's some of my old stomping grounds, that's crazy.

    If we're being picky, his competition threatened to have his body dumped in the river.
    also, Vincent K. McMahon is not a Junior, His dad is Vincent J McMahon, ergo Vincent K isn't Vince McMahon Jr.

      Ruthless businessman, fuckwit creative. He is the reason we have AEW. Think about that, his fans are so disenchanted by this stage that we need an alternative to the world's most successful wrestling promotion.
