Schladming Magic Mountains - Land of Champions - Go Wild

Schladming in Austria is not the best known of the country's ski regions but it's one of the finest - because it keeps a low profile and makes sure the season doesn't dominate the landscape. That also means its nature is better protected than in normal mixed regions.
Camera-ace France Hafner captures the stunning variety of a region caught between two mountain ranges made of very different rock - one porous limestone, the other rock-hard granite. The limestone Dachstein plateau, dry and mottled like the surface of a brain, lets rainwater and melting glaciers seep through, carving startling caves and descending into glossy forests whose dry brooks become raging torrents in the space of a morning. Capercaillie strut in the woods just out of cyclists' sight and male black grouse fight for females in cleared end-of-season spaces next to the ski-lifts. In their case their frantic energy is only visible when slowed down 30 times!
Red deer, fed in pens in winter, roam the hillsides in summer, filling the valleys with their urgent groans during the heady days of the rut. Lone wolves tread the winter snows. Schladming is not yet a stopping place for them - it's a crossroads on their way north or south, east or west to other countries where they're no longer hunted.
Marmots are the Meercats of the Alps, charming visitors to the pastures, nibbling weel-peeled carrots as they pose for photos.
But the kings of this world are the chamois, perfectly adapted to their hazardous habitat, even lowering their heart-rate in winter to conserve energy. Fighting, courting, playing, running or resting they treat their sheer surroundings with sovereign indifference.
