The mastered on-air mix is what you hear and we rarely go back to re-mix. Our engineers are awesome. We remix for our annual "Live on KEXP" cd that we put out.
Discovered the band while living briefly in Kentucky 1996-1998 witnessing the break-up of my marriage of 6-years. I got an apartment in the art district and basically lived close to my records, discovering a lot of indie stuff that even I was not aware of previously (which is saying a lot!). Yo La Tengo came highly recommended via indie fanzines, and quickly became one of my favorite bands, along sides Stereolab, whom I had been listening to for a few years. It's been fun going back and recollecting all of their albums on vinyl, and rediscovering the band after a 10-year lapse, during which 'time pulled my life in other directions.'
That solo at 26:40 is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. Maybe even my favorite ever. It has so much manic energy and is such a mess but its all calculated. Big ass respect to these guys.
Yes, this video is just full of amazing guitar work, and the arrangements set it up beautifully. If I could play guitar well enough to play leads, I would want every one of them to sound like something Ira would come up with. His solo in I'll Be Around is note perfect.
Solid band but they seem like grade A ass clowns in interviews. Ira sounds like a pseudo-intellectual douche nozzle and the drummer has this aloofness to her that's unsettling
FUCKING BEAUTIFUL!!!!! One of those rare bands that will never achieve the commercial success they deserve but artistically have raised the bar!!!!!! 🍻
So much respect for Yo La Tengo and their craft. No other modern rock band brings me to tears than these guys. Thanks @KEXP for bringing them to your studio to perform.
The album "Fade" is a true work of art, start to finish, imho; all songs on it work together to strengthen it as a whole. I first heard of this band from an article in The New Yorker, a review of the album "And Then Everything Turned Itself Inside Out" (2000) which is another great album. I have always thought of Yo La Tengo as a trio of musicians working at the highest & purest level of musical achievement.
I saw them on the Fade tour, and I watched Ira assault his guitar in a way I've never seen before during "Pass the Hatchet, I Think I'm Goodkind". He never broke a sweat. None of them did, during the entire performance. They don't age, they don't sweat, and their voices don't change.
I was in the local record store in my small(ish) town in western Canada and found Nothing Turned Itself on CD for $1. I had overlooked them forever and was happy with the find. The clerk said “I don’t want to go all High Fidelity on you, but if I put on Yo La Tengo on a Saturday I’ll ALWAYS sell a couple copies on vinyl.” I forgot about the CD for a few days and then put it in my car stereo after a great creative weekend and was just floored by the time I got to Track 3. It was the best musical experience I’ve had in years. I’m now a new fan, but excited to dive in deep.
It truly breaks my heart to look around and see so many negative comments about such a fantastic artist, but what can I expect when I reside in such a narrow-minded world. Wake up, people.
Don't sweat it - this music comes from a side of creation well outside of the normal and the expected so it's not surprising that the masses don't "get it." This is not necessarily why we love it, but in some ways this is what makes it special and possible. Just enjoy and be thankful you were able to find these guys ... and go see them live - there is nothing like it, warm and friendly and funny and completely engaging.
Saw them somewhere in london back in 2000. They were increadible. I am so glad to hear and watch this.. i can go to sleep now and continue listening to the sounds
I sometimes forget that Ira has a really good voice and a sly droll sense of humor. Yo La Tengo should be SO much bigger and everyone should see them do 'The Story Of Jazz' live at least once!
Ohhh they are one of my favorites band. They live is "acojonante" incredible!!! Listen Georgia singing "My little corner of the world" is an experience who you don't lose. ..
It's just so amazing to hear and see Ira and Georgia playing with such joy and precision on Before We Run. Ira informed my appreciation for music when he was writing for the Village Voice. Hell, he informed my sense of humor in high school. My eyes are wet.
Their live shows in that era were amazing. The then-current energy of those two albums was pretty good. YLT have mellowed with age, but not in boring or sappy ways. Just fewer guitar freakouts, less noise, more melody. But melody was always lurking, and the mostly-covers album Fakebook shows what geeky curious souls they are.
This is the most important band of contemporary relevance in my personal opinion. No other band has move as dynamically and as pro-bono (again in my opinion) as this band has for... how many decades now? Their 'Fade' album is superb, the one prior -Popular Songs- is superb as well, taking into account how this band breathes movement without letting their sound be constrained by any pre-concieve expectance.
I saw them twice. The first time was an acoustic show and it was terrible, I was so disappointed. But their second time was one of the best shows I’ve been to. So much energy and so diverse
Ira, (my Grandfather's name, on my Dad' side), Webster trivia, called the DJ out on the "fake quite gesture;" following the first song. But, thank you KEXP, for uploading the performance.
I love your KEXP channel guys...I discover it only few weeks ago and every your visitor is amazing and so different! You are my new favourite channel for discover new music. Good work guys! Greetings from Prague :)
The last bit of interview resonates with me so much. YLT grows with me, or vice versa? Whichever, doesn't matter. Love these guys. Easily among the best and most earnest group out there.
The mastered on-air mix is what you hear and we rarely go back to re-mix. Our engineers are awesome. We remix for our annual "Live on KEXP" cd that we put out.
your engineers are BEYOND awesome - on behalf of all music fans - thank you so much for what you do!

It reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins/Velvet Underground edit: hints of Hendrix too
Fade is marvelous. How they can continue making music that is so intrinsically moving is beyond me.
true. maybe a mixture of zero showy attitudes, music from their hearts, intense taste, love ...
Also, kudos to Kevin Cole of KEXP for all the questions and for paying great respect to Yo La Tengo. Thanks for keep it real. Heartfelt dude.

For almost 30 years these folks have been putting out beautiful, noisy music. Like a fine wine, they just keep getting better and better.....
Confession: I’ve only recently discovered these guys and am absolutely lovin them. Thanks as usual to KEXP for always having the best bands on!
They don't age and their voices don't change

Hollister Dixon they will also live forever
+Wong Cheng Until Jesus comes back and smites them down. Once and for all.
His voice is just so soothing and nostalgic. Sounds like simpler times. thumbs up if u cry every time
i crie evri tiem
Every time at 1:31
YLT is a time capsule back into the 90s. Many things have changed. YLT never changed.
I adore this album and this performance.

I love Georgia's voice so much.
I'll be around takes me to another planet. A better planet.
I love you.
holy fuck you couldn't be more right
another girl another planet
I frequently noodle around in the same key, it's very ambient. 👌
Great little set from one of the very few genuinely great bands of the last 30 years.
More invention and inspiration in one song than most bands achieve in whole albums or careers !
Still the best band in the world !
Saw them somewhere in london back in 2000. They were increadible. I am so glad to hear and watch this.. i can go to sleep now and continue listening to the sounds
Last song has me in tears. Beautiful.
I sometimes forget that Ira has a really good voice and a sly droll sense of humor. Yo La Tengo should be SO much bigger and everyone should see them do 'The Story Of Jazz' live at least once!
This is superb! I've watched it four times...so far.
Ohhh they are one of my favorites band. They live is "acojonante" incredible!!!

AWESOME! Can't get enough of that guitar... made me feel back in the 90's
I love listening these songs while I riding my motorbike to the stars
how u do that? headphones under helmet? isnt it dangerous on motobike?
greatest band ever
love the sincere admiration to YoLa that Kevin (the host) displays in the session
the true genius of modern music.
I used to look up college playlist in the back of rollingstone before smartphones and this was the first band that I discovered......instant love!!
Fantastic band Good mix Excellent show
Este grupo tiene varios años haciendo la lucha, sin integrarse a la cúpula de las bandas "grandes", pero quiero creer que es por gusto propio, porque tienen mucha calidad.
Ira Kaplan = Guitar Hero
thmsheine ... to anyone with earnest, non-heroic leanings.
Just such a fluid player -- never even seems like he's trying but every note he plays is perfect.
It's just so amazing to hear and see Ira and Georgia playing with such joy and precision on Before We Run. Ira informed my appreciation for music when he was writing for the Village Voice. Hell, he informed my sense of humor in high school. My eyes are wet.
Whenever Kevin Cole comes on I know it's gonna be great! And Holy shit: I love Yo La Tengo!
I recommend Electr-o-Pura and Painful. Those two albums are fantastic. It'd be hard not to dig YLT after listening to those.
Their best record: I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One, hands down.
Brilliant musicians. Love from Argentina.
This is about the most honest music I’ve heard in my whole life
Missed the last in-store at Easy Street, so thanks, KEXP, for this gift...
I LOVE YO LA TENGO
I love you! Yo la tengo, from Dominican Republic.
Klk mamey
Been a fan since Barnaby Hardly Working and YLT continues to amaze!
When Touring, keep Toronto in mind.

I love Georgia, Ira and James so much ❤️
PS. Thank you, KEXP. Much love to you folks, too.

KEXP greetings from Brasil, you guys are awesome! thank you for those sessions ;)
Love the weathered, beat-up, gritty fender strat. Good stuff! Love this band. Nice work, KEXP.
"Ohm" is just great! Strange, but great! Thanks KEXP
What a beatiful music!!! Thanks a lot!!!
i love yo la tengo!! they are a timeless band :,)
So glad Norton Records got a shout out. They were REALLY devastated, a lot of friends and I helped out for a while. :)
I love them. One of my favorite bands (besides Sonic Youth). I once heard them live in southern Germany, and it was great.
increible, los esperamos por 3a vez en Uruguay!!!! Nunca imaginé que tocara las 6 cuerdas abiertamente en OHM Ira, emocionan....
The silence after first song... Priceless!!!
Started to listen to YLT in 92... They look so old now, I guess so do I
Like they said in the song, that’s “The Point of It.”
Great way to honor the band Kevin. Nice work.
Man, oh, man. As soon as James started caressing those bass notes out I was in.
Beautiful band. Love From Brasil!

The sound is awesome. 👌😍👍
phenomenal, hope I can see them live one day ❤️
I saw them twice. The first time was an acoustic show and it was terrible, I was so disappointed. But their second time was one of the best shows I’ve been to. So much energy and so diverse

Why am I just now discovering this incredible music?
I discovered them about 20 years ago, and at the time thought "Why am I just now discovering this incredible music?!?" :)
love watching Ira go ham on guitar, what a workout. Imagine what the sheet music must look like for some of his solos lol
Aspetto con ansia il 15 maggio per poterli vedere dal vivo. Yo la tengo sempre nel mio cuore e nella mia testa☺😉
Well said Kevin!

Ohm performance is incredibly good !
The last bit of interview resonates with me so much. YLT grows with me, or vice versa? Whichever, doesn't matter. Love these guys. Easily among the best and most earnest group out there.
