@@starcrysis23a midlife crisis isn't always a bad thing, it's just a descriptor for a common phenomenon. It's when someone who has an established life, or is of an age where people would expect them to be settling down, realizes they aren't satisfied with some aspect of their lives (or become acutly aware of their age and the passage of time) and seek (often extreme) change, risk, or new experiences. It can also manifest as someone attempting to fit in with younger people or look for ways they can reconnect with their own youth. This isn't bad, but can often have negative effects in someone's life due to risk taking and impulsive actions, or can come off as awkward if they try to appear younger, "how do you do, fellow kids" style.
I first played _Ocarina of Time,_ my first _Zelda_ game, when I was the same age as Link. …I am now the same age as Tingle. I am having an existential crisis.
Everyone in their 30s is dreaming about happening upon (or being found) by fairies every time we play a Zelda game... They're so nice to have on hand, friendly, and sometimes outright cute. Does that mean we have become Tingle?
I think Wind Waker is what first made Tingle come off as creepy. Like, he was a little strange in Majora's Mask but he was mostly innocuous and just wanted to sell maps and be friends. In WW, he gouges Link for hundreds of rupees and even enslaves other people. Not to mention he apparently makes some really creepy comments in the Tingle Tuner.
Thanks for this deep dive, I had no idea how odd the Tingle spin-offs were! The chef in BOTW being Tingle seems intentional, but I also wonder if Nintendo hasn't already replaced Tingle with the monster brothers in BOTW and TOTK, especially as one of them wants to become a spirit creature through the accumulation of gem-like objects, and the other helps you make monster recipes (making him a cook of sorts)!
I think I must be in the exceptionally small minority that genuinely isn’t bothered by Tingle in the slightest, and never has been. I found him to be just a regular NPC in Majora’s Mask. And enjoyed his quirky and whimsical nature (which most NPCs of the game have). In Wind Waker, it was a nice surprise to see him. And I thoroughly enjoyed the sidequest where you learn the embellished story of MM Tingle when using the GBA-GC link cable. His outrageous bouts in the Tingle series games were wacky and charming. (Does Purlo even count?) Yeah. I never found him annoying or creepy.
The Zeltik intro music is very nostalgic to me. While it is absent, the quality and care put into these masterful videos never fails to entertain me. The wait between videos isn’t most definitely worth it- every time.
Nintendo: Here's this goofy character who wears tights Also Nintendo: Oh and he also represents human greed and the lengths people will go to acquire more wealth, transforming them into a reviled, twisted caricature, forcing them to live in a hell of their own creation.
I adore Tingle and I genuinely hope that he gets a chance to return. The series is full of weird characters; BotW/TotK's Kilton and Koltin and EoW's Stamp Guy show there's no shortage of them. Tingle deserves his chance to shine again in a more endearing light.
It's notable that the chart he gives you when you free him, Tingle's Chart, shows you not only the sectors where Windfall Island and Tingle Island are, but two others. One is the sector for your home island, which might seem creepy, but not so much in the context of the final sector it shows you... because both of them have Great Fairies, specifically, the ones who increase your Wallet capacity. Which is great for him, because you can't pay what you can't carry, and "anyone who doesn't have a deep wallet won't be reading any maps, that's for sure."
@4:50 I don't find it weird he uses a balloon for those purposes. How else is he supposed to get the layout of land to make his maps? Its not like has a satellite or anything
My first Zelda game was Oracle of Ages, six year old me found Tingle adorable and wishing I could take him to woods outside town so he could meet the fairies too. Was genuinely kinda sad to later play all the other games where he's depicted as kinda creepy, or greedy, after that.
Tbh i dont think Tingle is referring to kokiri when talking about veing a reincarnated forest fairy but more so referring to fairies like tael and tatl
I can say this with absolute honesty… NEVER has an ad in a video ever made me laugh as much as this video’s raycon bit! 😂 (I guess that sound traumatized us all)

Enjoyed this video a lot! Tingle is a very weird character but I have always liked his belief that one day a fairy would find him. Despite Tingle selling maps in MM and floating in the air it was only after watching your vid that I realised the reason he was floating was so he could sketch maps for Link. Feel so stupid for never making the connection before, only been 24 years! I hated Tingle in WW making you pay so much for the maps to be deciphered, if there was a way to throw him into the great sea like a cuckoo I would happily have done so. At least the Tri force quest was improved massively in WWHD. I would be up for Tingle making a cameo in a future mainline Zelda game as a side character as long as his role was something like been the shop owner of a balloon popping mini game where Link can get a heart piece.
I'm English and I loved Tingle! He was one of my faves as a kid. Funnily enough Sanji is also my fave one piece character XD. But I also started watching anime fairly young albeit after playing the zelda games, Tingle was funny to me so perhaps I was just lucky enough to understand it?
Man, I thought of Rosy Rupeeland maybe two hours ago. I love that game so much. It's so weird and creative that it makes me wonder whether Japan keeps some gems to itself. 20:09 There's a strange phenomenon where the UK seems to be the only noteworthy country in Europe for some people. I'm not sure what to make of that. But yes, you mentioned Europe later. 21:19 Yes, it does. For some conversations it says how much you need to give to not be rejected entirely.
One detail I've noticed is almost never touched upon in discussions about Tingle is his red nose. In Japanese media, a character whose nose is bright red is, more often than not, an indicator of someone who is drunk, often times being an extreme alcoholic. At the same time, in various forms of Western media, a red nose tends to indicate someone who uses illegal drugs, usually cocaine or similar nasally-consumed products. I personally believe that Tingle's nose (especially with it being practically crimson) shows that _both_ interpretations apply, as a history of drug and alcohol abuse can readily explain a vast majority (if not all) of the things Tingle does.
Well, I think that Kilton and Koltin from the Era of the Wilds have successfully replaced poor Tingle. I like those two but I think Tingle is just on a whole other level of charming.
Now I wonder if Kilton and his Brother where slightly inspired by Tingle. They cant sell maps, because this wouldn't really work for the games they are in. But both are very weird, slightly creepy, fly around in a baloon and are obsessed with either monsters or Bluepees (even want to become one. A creature that.. collects rupees..huh). But the brothers seem much more lighthearted and less malicious than Tingle. Its like they looked at Tingle and said: okay, we want Something similar, bit make it much cuter and harmless so that the people in the west won't freak out.
He weirded me out as a kid when I first saw him in 2000. I mean, I get quirky oddballs exists (I'm one of them) but there's that and there's legit mental illness and I was convinced then, as I am now, that he might actually have had a mental illness.
The fact that multiple incarnations of Tingle exist, something which only Link, Zelda, and Ganondord can also boast, is a collosal red flag that he is not an ordinary person. (As well as a sign that Termina being a figment of Link's imagination is ridiculous because that would mean that Link dreamed up a real person before meeting him in any form.)
I honestly think Tingle is over-hated. He's meant to be a character that one simultaneously hates and likes because of his weirdness, silliness, creepiness, and pitiability. He's actually seemingly hated within the Zelda Universe itself, which I think makes him all the more pitiable. As a contrarian, I like him partially BECAUSE he's so hated in the west. Of course, I also do hate him because he's creepy and has some dark character traits, but I also enjoy his weirdness because I like weird things. A complicated opinion for a complicated character.
Hey @Zeltik ! Did you explore the idea that the dude from Twilight pincess who is stuck in a golden form, with alot of fortune is actually the real identity of tingle? and what if in the ''real'' zelda universe, its actually darker and more like in Twilight princess where after all these adventure, it conclude to be a dark selfish greedy dude that need souls to buy back his soul...all of this because of a pact or whatever from a certain obscur deity... :p what if !? anyway. good thought !
Tingle is my favorite character from the series. I just love the guy! I never found him creepy at all, just weird and funny. I think he was ahead of the time for the western audience. They were not ready for Tingle back in the day. Hopefully he comes back in the future. He deserves it. ❤
Now I am imagining Tingle being in the Sega Yakuza Franchise as some sort of bizzare crossover. from what I seen of the series he'd weirdly fit in there.
We think it's odd that Tingle knows about the Kokiri...but we don't find it odd that the world knows about Tingle? If he's from Termina, *what is he doing in Hyrule?*
Zeltik video on day off? Nice. Could you cover the Legend of Zelda comic books? One has a story about the origin of the Majoras mask and I think its really interesting, but dont know if they're canon
Kolton and Koltin replaced him and his brothers as anti-tingle in the newer games. They share a lot of similarities with their Kotaku behavior and off-putting looks. They also use a balloon for their business and share a similar base appearance to Tingle under their costumes. They however, obsess over monsters instead of fairies, seem malicious by overtly intimidating looks but are genuinely polite and thoughtful (opposite of tingle who wears clothes that SHOULD make him seem harmless and innocent, hiding darker bahaviors)and are much more pragmatic. They make genuine and practical efforts toward their goals in more scientific methods, don't pressure Link to help in an entitled way, fairly compensate him when he assists and despite some better connections between the magical elements for he land and Rupees, they dont directly deal in them. They famously work in their own barter system and never accept rupees as payment (unless you count bauble gems but that seems to be a specific rupee related monster part.) They also seem to share a genuinely good brotherly bond unlike common portrayals of the Tingle Bros. When Kilton introduces his brother pretty positively and when Kolton turns into a Blupee, Kilton seems genuinely sad at the loss of his brother but also understanding of his wishes and happy he was able to successfully pursue them. They are much more mature and adult versions of the Tingle Brothers despite keeping some childhood love for certain things. They also seem a bit of a blend between the Tingles and another group in the game, the -sons. The brothers are -tons, and have a similar proud work ethic that the -sons do. Kilton even winds up helping out at the town as a personal consultant for one of the big art installation projects, becoming well accepted despite the unfounded prejudice he got in the last game. There may be a link between the Tingles, main -son family and the -tons. If the chef was in fact a Tingle it could be that the -sons and/or tons are related. Considering BotW and TotK take place way far down the Zelda timeline, it makes poetic sense that the archetypical character itself has grown up and evolved into a more mature and world accurate representation. They are much more like genuine Otaku you see at conventions or in small enthusiast groups and less like the negative side of Peter Pan or a stereotypical comic nerd in his mom's basement. They are reformed representation.

They are much more like genuine Otaku you see at conventions or in small enthusiast groups and less like the negative side of Peter Pan or a stereotypical comic nerd in his mom's basement. They are reformed representation.
