I just found your videos! My job used to be restoring and repairing musical instruments, mostly metal. Now that I'm retired I have to keep using my hands and heart and have been dabbling more in woodworking. I appreciate your skill & explanations...AND your courage to put up with the rude, inappropriate comments. I just have never understood why some guys reduce skilled women to slutty inuendo. 🤣I only have one or two of most of my tools...except for sanding! Thanks for some great recommendations. Love the bearing guided one. Always looking for new ways to improve this task!! I ‘dabble’ in woodworking-and I mean ‘dabble’- 😁- I do more refinishing, but I would like to learn how to do repairs and how to do some simple things with more woodworking tools. (I DID build a beautiful hemlock island top out of a reclaimed beam for a friend’s cottage.
I must say, I was pretty proud of myself because it turned out beautifully! 😉
It was 6’long x 3’wide x 4”thick.
I taught myself how to join boards- learned about end grains and also learned how to dowel pieces together. I loved my Kreg Jig- it made it SO easy to figure out! (And then it was destroyed and was thrown out by a clean-up crew after a massive flood went up to the ceiling of my basement. Insurance only gave me 1/3rd of the damages, so there were other things on the list that were a priority to replace before my Jig set, which I still haven’t got. 😔)
Anyways, some questions about the inflatable sanding drums. Forgive my lack of knowledge but I’ve never seen these before. What is the benefit/purpose of inflatable drums? Is it simply to make it easier to get the sand paper onto them? Why would you want to change the firmness of the drum? Can you give me some examples of situations when you would change the firmness?

:) I use the inflatable sanders a lot for intarsia work when you want to shape and round edges.
I have one of the Grizzly sanders. I would like your thoughts on it and the flap sander.
Skyler, wonderful, informative video as always. Just the other day, I used a 10" handscrew clamp to hold down my belt sander upside down so I could sand some wood blocks I was making for a Christmas present - worked like a charm. Also, as an alternative to that almost $500 Guinevere sanding system, I use a Dewalt die grinder that will accept all those accessories you showed with a 1/4" shank. Bare tool only, I saw Dewalt had this 20V XR machine on sale for $90, a great deal if you already have the batteries as I see you do. I like it because you're not attached to the cable, and it will run at higher RPM levels as well, especially when carving. Just a thought. BTW, if I didn't mention it before, your fireplace mantel looks stunning - beautiful Christmas decs!

cool stuff. I’ve been on the fence for months on getting one of the benchtop oscillating belt and spindle sanders but havent chosen which one yet. They seem to all be about the same, but its pricey
Yes, pretty much works the same but so so useful
If the Delta has standard shafts, you could put sharpening stones on it. Lee Valley sells those. The lower speeds don’t burn tool tips. Same for the Rikon- buy some extremely fine, or a leather belt for honing your chisels.
:) the delta I bought as a standard sharpening grinder. I had to buy extra things to convert it in a sander per recommendation from intarsia

Thanks never saw the inflatable or pattern shanks before. Does the bearing leave marks behind? Curious do you use the newer Cubicon type paper with your orbital sanders? Ypu should be in Sales Skyler its not easy making sanding look fun and easy! Thanks
No it doesn’t leave marks. Only used it once so far and was good. Yes, I use the cubitron sandpaper and love it! Most of us hate sanding but with the right tools, sanding sucks less
With your spindle sander, make sure you blow out the dust at least once a month. I had one and it stopped working properly because the sealed bearings clogged with sawdust. I had to disassemble it and clean the bearings. Just a heads up.

Skyler, why do you dislike the Rikon belt and disk sander? I have a belt/disk sander that comes in handy. Bought from Sears at least 30 years ago.
I find the 5 in disk is too small for anything and the belt I never found any use for it
I also have belt sanders that I seldom use. However I did run across a site on UA-cam that showed a person on many videos who specialized in get lots of use out of the sander and especially how to use it correctly. So some woodworkers might want to take a second look at the tool and learn to master it for some types of woodworking.
I agree. I thought about making one of those jigs where you mount the belt sander upside down...
@@woodworkingwithSkyler If you have time check out Ramon Valdez Fine Furniture site who seems to get every ounce out of the tool. He really likes it. I still like you think it is a specialized tool that takes some time to fully master or you will end up with a buzz cut piece of wood.

Yes you can do any type grinding but cost looks bit high may be in future prices may come down

Hi Skyler. It’s amazing how often I find something useful on nearly every video you produce. I am ordering the Durga old kit. I have the rubber molding strips already and yes they’re not that useful. One you didn’t show is a Drexel detail sander. Has come in very useful.

Not sanding but my biggest regret buying is my portable electric planer. Can't stand that thing. I also regret not buying a wen sander like yours. So many people have them. Instead I bought a 6" disc/belt sander. I miss not having a spindle sander.
