Depending on what country but as a Swede I can then drive in Thailand. But must have both my normal Swedish driver license and also the international driver license. It's valid for a year.

From a chem class 50 years ago, methanol has a lower boiling point and condenses first. So a responsible distiller throws out the first portion of the product.
If the consulates want to be really useful in Laos, they could walk around the bars with a test kit or two and test the drinks for methanol. The kits aren't cheap, nor are the people wandering around and doing the testing, but compared to the cost and the human tragedy of recent events, the returns would be enormous. Dr M
There are very few staff working at foreign consulates in Laos. While there for 4 months several years ago I attempted to contact the Australian consulate for 3 weeks without any response. I gave up and contacted the consulate in Bangkok. They said many people complain how difficult it is to speak to the consul in Laos due to a lack of staff. Most important agencies there seem to be run on a shoestring. Even with policing.

Methanol from "cheaper homebrew"? Wtf does that mean? I've been homebrewing beer, cider, and wine for decades. Yeast makes ethanol. Being cheap w the ingredients just makes the finished product less tasty. It doesn't introduce methanol.

Methanol is almost always a trace product of the fermentation process. The problem is when it's concentrated (distilled) and not discarded at that point. Methanol has a lower vapour pressure (boiling point) which means it comes out first, during distillation. You've gotta be either extremely ignorant, shrewd or stupid to keep the 'heads' when distilling booze.
Driving: If you are informed that your issued drivers license is qualified as an International license. Do not believe it. It is true but the Police have not been told or told wrong. You will be able to rent a car, The judge will understand but the local police will seize it and charge you. I saw a legal example in the ad Tim showed. Do the process anyway and save the hassle and explanations. Note: my information is dated, laws may have changed, do it anyway no matter what. They stop the Thai people at check points for Insurance and Tax registration and no license daily and often. If you drive you will meet the police.
The drivers license thing is a MESS! Many consulates will NOT translate the drivers license for you since on the DLT website (as well as in the booking) it says that you need a "International drivers license together with your original license OR translation". But however, on going to the DLT I was denied even though I had all documents. So now I'm stuck. Cannot do a translation since the embassy does't offer those services. DLT doesn't accept international drivers license even though they are obligated to by the convention they signed. So stuck paying tax but cannot even drive a car. What is the point of getting an official translation of the drivers license when that is exactly what an international drivers license is! Such a mess. And that facebook page is also not correct. TM30 is not the same as residence certificate. Just having a TM30 is instant deny. You will need a residence certificate which you can't get on a visa exempt or tourist visa. If you have a work permit with your name and address printed on it it can also be accepted by DLT without a residence certificate. Seems Khaosod English or Public relations department didn't even to the most basic research. Not surprised. Edit: It's different between DLT office and office. Some, specially in Bangkok, will follow the rules. Some more rural places like mine will make up their own rules. So your milage may vary.
DLT accepted my IDP just fine and the process was extremely smooth. But then again I did go through government channels (through the diplomat queue as an Elite visa holder), took maybe 20 mins to convert my license into a Thai one

Several years ago now, there was a rash of knock-off whiskey going around, recall an article where at least one group of Thais got arrested for it down in BKK. They were putting home brew into Johnny Walker Black bottles with proper looking labels, although don't recall any methanol poisoning associated with it. My bet... bootleg liquor makers' greed. It's coming up to peak holiday season and maybe these bootleggers are ramping up the production of fake branded liquors to sell. The more they make the more likely they screw up and all it takes is one bad batch and there'll be methanol tainted bootleg liqour all over.
