  • Machining content this week includes machining a new gearbox shaft and milling the keyways, removing 6 broken bolts using left hand drills, and using the boring mill to drill a threaded rod out of a clevis.
    We also have some parts to share for the G&E shaper that a viewer has loaned me, and I talk about more of the oiling system parts that I am going into.

    When I watch your channel I feel it's a privilege to learn more about machinist work, something I didn't have a clue about. Now if I'm with someone who does this work, I'll be able to understand what they're explaining. It's really amazing to have you and UA-cam so readily available when only a few years ago I'd never have dreamed about this type work.

    When our new shop foreman took over he eliminated all the bolts that weren't grade eight. That solved most of our broken bolt problem.

    I just wish our machines at work would cut within 0.001" with no taper. I always have to stop at 2-3thou over and sand it to size.
    That gets fun with the Nardini lathe...7-10thou taper in 36"...after tweaking. The ways are shot.

      Frequently to remove broken bolts as they may unscrew in the reverse direction the drill rotates.

      They were used in early multi spindle drill heads. The spindles were geared together, so each alternate spindle counter rotated ( If that makes sense) Every other drill needed to be left handed.

    As a retired theatrical lighting designer, I can say that you new LED lighting is obviously going to work well for shop use, and the new lights are working very well for video lighting at the bench.
    You have good face lighting coming from in front and above at a good natural angle (the light bouncing off the wall in front of you and lighting your face) and the direct light coming down on you is making a good "key" light. This brightens your shoulders and around your head, and forms what is known as a "halo" that separates you from the background and makes you 'pop out' as an individual and not part of the scenery. (Look at the talking heads on TV news, you will see the same lighting technique -- it works well).
    A suggestion -- when you put a row of new lights down the other side of the shop, put them on a separate switch so you can turn them off when shooting video at the bench. You want the background to be a little darker than yourself in the the foreground to get good video, and if you brighten up the background, you are going to start blending in to the background, even with the key light effect you now have. The brightness you have there now works great for video, but I'm sure you will want to get that side brighter for shop use someday. Just leave the new lights there off when shooting video at the bench.

      Glyn Davies not only is it a cheaper per watt light (I converted 90% of my house over to led) it provides a nice true wavelength color, and depending on your taste can be tuned to perfect color renderings.. it's the way to go, till the new light tech comes out, and that may be a few hundred years

    As an apprentice I used to make similar gear box shafts in the fifties. We could not finish ours on the lathes because the lathes were worn out. We left twenty thou for the cylindrical grinder to remove. If we left more than .020 it made the grinders mad because they were on piece work. Our gear boxes were used in the Arabian oil fields. Long time ago.

    I love watching you ply your craft. You're a prime example of what happens when you do what you love. Taking a rough piece of material, and turning it into a piece of art is what you do. I'm a 55 year old man now, but way back when, industrial arts is what got me through high school. Every one of my wood, and metal shop teachers had the same demeanor that you do. Safety, patience, planning, execution, pride. You're a man to be respected, Adam. Thanks for your contributions by sharing your wealth of knowledge, and for sharing a little bit of yourself, and your life with all of us. *Peace*

I'm sure you can see the difference as well. You can see the work surface so much better and see the parts/equipment at the bench a lot better. Details pop with it. Great stuff. I'm definitely jealous of the lighting and want to get my garage setup with the same. Awesome stuff.

    • @ColtaineCrows
      @ColtaineCrows 6 років тому

      Well, all of those would've been welded solid before I was done, because I ain't got any proper tools to deal with broken bolts. All hand drills and poor quality extractor tools(are there any actual good quality ones? Feels like no matter the vendor they all deliver the same crap, and we're talking expensive "industrial" tools here). Oh well, I usually manage, but it would've been nice to have at least a real drill-press or a mill to use the left hand drill method for sure!

    That shaft work is perfection in manual machine work. ‘Thank you’ to your employer for allowing a few videos from work. It really shows off not only your skills, but the degree of perfection and quality a customer will receive. The business ought to have you start a channel for them, as part of both marketing and promotions, and also as a proof of performance as to ‘whats inside’, for the clients.
    Nice lighting in the home shop. I just put a LED strip over our baby lathe... OMG, such good light! no glare, low shadows, all around far better than fluorescent tubes that were less light and prone to flicker with age.
