  • Working and design of Pelton wheel is elaborated through video animation in this lecture. Here importance of bucket shape, number of buckets and bucket to jet speed ratio on performance of Pelton wheel are well elaborated with turbomachinery principles.

    Hard to imagine generator frequency is controlled by water pressure...Especially varying generator load as well. Flywheel perhaps?

    Should buckets be hemispherical in cross section at each side of the split? At maximum power extraction the tangential velocity of the spent water is zero?

    Relating to power,force *velocity of bucket,when bucket velocity=jet velocity,as in video no power generated,but if one bucket misses water jet then another bucket will get in otuch and it will rotate causing poer to be developed?please explain me if i go wrong

    It diverts flow to about 160 degree

      yes it is usually made in this way that the bucket diverts the water about 160-170 degree this is to ensure that the water flow out of one bucket doesn't strikes the back of the succeding bucket.

    Why do we call pelton turbine a impulse turbine?
    What does the word impulse mean?

      Impulse force arises due to the sudden change in velocity, such as a water jet hitting a surface. In Pelton, impulse force is the motive force.
